  • Relocating to Hawaii comes with its set of challenges. High rent prices can eat into your budget quickly, transportation costs add up, and groceries here are notoriously expensive. These expenses can make the dream of living in Hawaii seem out of reach for many. But don't worry, I've got some great tips to help you manage these costs and still enjoy everything Hawaii has to offer.
In this video, I'll share 10 unique and practical ways to save money when moving to Hawaii, especially if you're planning to live in Honolulu:
    1. **Book Your Flight with Points or Miles**: Utilize credit card points or miles to save on flights. Cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred, Capital One Venture X, and American Express Gold are excellent options. Use tools like AwardTool and Points Yeah to find the best deals.

    2. **Buy Local Produce in Chinatown or Farmers' Markets**: Save on groceries by purchasing fresh, affordable produce from Chinatown and farmers' markets throughout the islands.
    3. **Use Alternative Transportation**: Reduce transportation costs by using TheBus, ride-sharing services, or an electric scooter/bike. Consider an electric vehicle with a solar PV setup for significant savings if you need a car.
    4. **Find Affordable Housing by Looking for Shared Rentals or Ohana Units**: Opt for shared rentals or ohana units for more affordable housing options. House hacking can also help you save on mortgage payments by renting out part of your property.
    5. **Cook at Home More Often Instead of Dining Out**: Save money by cooking at home with local ingredients. Explore cooking RUclips channels for inspiration.
    6. **Shop at Discount Stores and Buy in Bulk**: Purchase essentials in bulk from stores like Costco and Sam's Club to save money. Be mindful of buying only what you can consume to avoid waste.
    7. **Take Advantage of Free or Low-Cost Outdoor Activities**: Enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty with free or low-cost activities like hiking, beach days, and exploring parks.
    8. **Use Energy-Efficient Appliances to Lower Utility Bills**: Reduce utility costs by using energy-efficient appliances and being mindful of electricity and water usage.
    9. **Get a Library Card for Free Access to Books, Movies, and Internet**: Utilize library resources for free books, movies, Wi-Fi, and tools from the HNL Tool Library in Kakaako.
    10. **Grow Your Own Food**: Save on groceries by growing your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs in Hawaii's perfect climate.

You can "save" a few dollars, but many STILL live paycheck to paycheck. I remedied the situation by MOVING to the mainland. Since then i have owned a total of 4 homes on all 3 coasts. Best decision ever. Talk about "SAVING" $$$. IMMIGRATION.
