Jansen de Guzmán Not really a choke when the defense just makes a better play. Lynch wasn't the best in those situations anyway. Besides, the play call was actually good. New England's defense was just able to recognize it and defend against it.

1) Over the course of the regular season, yes. The statistics showed he wasnt 100% guaranteed there. But no one, and I mean LITERALLY NO ONE, other than the OC of the Seahawks and I guess Pete Carroll would execute those plays based on statistical odds over the evaluation of a season. People forget how they even got to that yardline? Do you know? Lynch had just ran for 5 yards before JUST being tripped up a yard shy of the endzone. In the 4th quarter, Lynch was running rampant on the New England defense and *never* was dropped for a loss the final 8 minutes of the game. Are you telling me that after picking up an easy 5 yards the previous play, you wouldnt go to him just ONE more time with :56 seconds left and time running? Anyone who thinks "yeah lets pass it and not give it to the best player at picking up 3 yards" (he was averaging 4 yards a carry that night). So main point, based on regular season stats? Yes Lynch was not the best in goalline situations. In THAT particular situation based on how the game was flowing and how Lynch was running. You give the damn ball to Lynch or a QB sneak or something.
2) Lemme guess. You think it was a "smart" play call because they had a timeout and the clock was running? The previous play ended at :56. And they let it run down to :25 before snapping the ball. If you throw for an incomplete there, the clock stops at :22 and you its now 3rd down from the 1 yard line. So okay. Maybe the CHOICE to pass is "smart". But how in the FUCK are you gonna call an inside slant on the goal line? Coaches learn shit like that in peewee football. If youre ever gonna throw at the 1 yardline, you throw to the corners. Why? Because thats where the most space is. You throw to the middle of the field and its packed with players and the worst thing can happen: an interception. If you do a fade lob to the corner and its incomplete? Well then thats fine. I might agree that choosing to PASS woudlnt be ridiculous to think about. But the actual PLAY CALL was just about the stupidest decision they made. If they run it, and dont get it, call timeout, you have 3rd and goal from the 1 and :22 seconds left. If you cant punch it in from that yardage in two chances, you dont deserve to win anyway lol.
Disclaimer. Im a 49ers fan, and its absurd that Id be defending the case for the Seahawks to win back to back. But in terms of just me being a football fan, watching that was both hilarious and stupid at the same time. Im never gonna be unhappy that the seahawks didnt get a 2nd superbowl. Im just saying. When people try to justify that call, it kinda pisses me off.
Jansen de Guzmán Sure, you can argue that a slant play wouldn't be the best option, but Kearse was supposed to draw Butler and Browner away from Lockette for just long enough to leave him open in the middle. Obviously that didn't happen, but it was meant to open up significantly more space for Lockette. You can clearly see that had Kearse successfully drew Butler and Browner away for just half a second, Lockette would have had the easy TD. Ultimately, the defensive awareness from Browner and his quick coaching to Butler did Seattle in. Not to mention, pretty much everyone other than Seattle, along with Browner and Butler were expecting a run and were stuffing the line. A run, most likely, wouldn't have scored on at least the first attempt. Also, as far as Lynch is concerned, yes, I remember him making that 5 yard run before Wilfork (I'm pretty sure) tripped him up at the last second. I also remember Kearse making a miracle catch at the 6 yard line to get Seattle into striking distance even before Lynch's run. Also, New England had stopped Lynch for no gain on both a 3rd-and-2 and a 3rd-and-1 in the red zone earlier that game. In a situation where Lynch was shaky all season and even in to next season (OT vs. STL, Lynch run up the middle on 4th-and-inches, Lynch tackled for loss), and paired with the predictability of running the ball in that situation, deciding to pass, and even the play they chose was, in my opinion, a good call. At the very least the call is certainly defensible. Ultimately, they had the worst possible outcome of that play call. If they had run a corner route and it had been intercepted, the Seahawks would have been crucified for that as well.
My disclaimer, I am a (former) St. Louis Rams fan. I hate the Seahawks probably just as much as you do. (I now hate everyone in that division, thanks to Kroenke, but that's a different discussion).

I was shaking for an hour straight after that Packers/Seahawks game. I've never been so sad/let down in my life. If we would've caught the onside kick, not been scored on by the fake field goal, knocked down the hail mary on the 2 point conversion, not slid after we caught what we thought was the game sealing interception, or won the coin toss in overtime. If just one of those lucky things for the seahawks would've gone our way Aaron Rodgers would have another ring.

One thing that I noticed about the Cundiff miss is how late he came out onto the field. He didn't even step up to the spot until there was 11 seconds on the play clock. Why did it take so long for him to get out there? He definitely seemed rushed. Baltimore had a time out. I know kickers don't want to get iced on the field, but it seems like a 30 second time out would have at least given him a chance to take his time with such a huge kick.
