Why Across the Spider-Verse is NOT Changing Animation

  • I saw Across the Spider-Verse and while Sony's Spider-Verse films have proven that animation can be anything and it maximizes potential rather than changing the animation medium. They have no limitations and can showcase a blend of different styles and stories due to the premise of the film. Unfortunately I don't see this changing animation as not every story can take place in an infinite multiverse of possibilities, but it does show that not everything has to have the Pixar look we've come to know over the past few decades. Hopefully these films inspire both major studios and independent animators to try new things and explore what digital animation can really become.

    Have you seen Into the Spider-Verse or Across the Spider-Verse? What did you think of the film? (try not to get into spoilers.)

    We have different idea of what changing means. Yes, Spider-Verse is changing Animation. For one people who see expect more now from Animation. Also, because others haven't done it yet doesn't mean that they aren't trying. Also there are projects that are already in the make and it would be hard to restart those projects because of time and money, mainly money. Ones does not often throw out years of work easily.

    Kind of a clickbait video since by opening the door to different styles of animated movies, it IS changing animation. We might not have gotten cool things like Puss in Boots, the Mitchell’s, or Arcane if it wasn’t for Spiderverse. But I see what you’re saying and I agree. In fact, I hope it doesn’t change animation in the way that everyone starts doing the mixed media style. It makes sense for these movies and for Gumball, but it won’t work for everything. This style needs to be used purposefully. But yeah, I hope we see a lot more studios experimenting with different styles now!

      My comparison to Toy Story is the frame of reference. When Toy Story came out it really changed animation. Within a few years of it's release, the majority of animated films looked just like it. It became the only style that audiences bought into. I don't see the same here. I think that most animated films won't look like the Spider-Verse in a few years. They may borrow elements from it, and it has certainly opened doors, but an entire shift of the industry? I just don't see it happening.

      @@ModernMouse Again, I get it, and while I agree they won’t all look like Spiderverse (nor do I think they should) the mere fact that they’ll borrow elements from it instead of just doing the Pixar style over and over is already a change. Maybe not as massive as the switch from hand drawn to CGI, but definitely a change, and it’s already happening. Current examples like Puss might not pull it off quite as well as Spiderverse, but it’s certainly a breath of fresh air.
      Besides, these movies are making butt-loads of money, so I’d be surprised if Hollywood isn’t gonna try to reproduce that success by releasing more movies like it. How successful they will be at it remains to be seen.

    Excellent video! Thanks for doing this. It’s true, Spider-Verse isn’t gonna change the medium, but it totally opens the doors to new possibilities within the medium - or at least opens the minds up of audiences to appreciate more than what they’ve come to expect.. And I think that’s incredible.

      I've actually loved seeing more appreciation for different styles of animation in recent years. This movie will likely only further that. I also hope this is the film that gets some people into comics. It feels like the closest to that of any comic film I've seen. My local shop just closed down a month ago because it wasn't getting enough business.

    Awesome video!!! The combination of all the different animation styles in the film was just stunning in my opinion! I never knew Art could go that far like it did since Who Framed Roger Rabbit .

      Every few minutes I was blown away by the art on screen and I kept thinking how I'd like to see that frame on my wall. I'm planning to see it in theaters again sometime this week because it's such a beautifully visual film.

      Interestingly, Across the Spiderverse is my favorite animated film of the year. In fact, the last few years I've thought other studios were better than Disney. I've always approached Disney as my niche, not my bias, but I also tend to pick topics I enjoy rather than talking negatively about things. This has actually been a recent conversation I've had with people and I think you'll start to see some changes on Modern Mouse that will reflect more mixed opinions about Disney and further branching away from Disney's product.

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse managed to surpassed Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train your Dragon, Chicken Run, The Road to El Dorado, The Prince of Egypt, The Secret of NIMH and The Iron Giant as my #1 Favorite Non-Disney Animated film. This film, along with The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Vivo, made Sony Pictures Animation as my favorite Non-Disney animation studio, overshadowing DreamWorks Animation. Sony understand "animation is art" now.
    I have to watch the sequel though, if it succeed my expectations, then will surpass Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, How to Train your Dragon 2 and Hidden World, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (even though i have to see that movie yet) and Toy Story 3 as my favorite animated sequel.

    • @ModernMouse

      As someone who rarely believes a sequel is better than the original and has held Toy Story 3 as one of the highest standards of a good sequel, Across the Spider-Verse is artistically the best sequel in animation. It may not have the emotional impact that Toy Story has but this isn't far behind it.

    Another great video 📹 from you Josh considering I just saw Spider-Man Across the Spider Verse 🕷 on Tuesday and thought it was excellent I do feel that other studios are borrowing the visual technique from Spider Verse quite often I'm noticing from DreamWorks Animation's The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots the last wish

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Год назад +1

      The major difference is that when Toy Story came out, within 5 years, nearly every film looked just like it. I don't see that happening here. There might be elements of change, but I don't think the majority of animated films will look like the Spider-Verse in 5 years.

    • @jerrelljones9991
      @jerrelljones9991 Год назад +1

      @Modern Mouse I hope not but it's like you said which I do agree with the fact that they are adding the two dimensional aesthetics of cartoony drawings and illustrative comic books to add that Nostalgic feel of hand drawn feel for audiences who love 2D as a cartoonist myself who draws traditionally on paper with pencil and colored pencils and has animated traditionally I just really wish they would just go back to 2D instead of using 3D to fake the look of 2D

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Год назад +1

      I don't think we will ever see a traditional hand drawn animated film without the help of computers in some way. Even smaller studios like Cartoon Saloon do all of their 2D animation on tablets. I think that's kind of the new "old school" approach now.

    • @jerrelljones9991

      @Modern Mouse Oh no no Josh I was talking more about the desire and want to see more 2D animated films in general but ofc with digital assistance we need computers to help with the production and use the 2D animation softwares I was just saying I wanted to see more 2D animation but not use 3D animation to fake the look of 2D as an artist who draws with a pencil and sometimes on tablets I can tell the difference but no we can't take it back to the days of ink and paint and cels those movies won't come out until 2065
