The thing I say to anyone who enjoys Spiderverse is: "Now go watch Klaus. And after that, watch Paperman!" That's the real origin of that fresh style which is becoming more and more popular in animation (see TMNT) and I'm so happy someone on the internet is finally giving it the credit it deserves. Thank you very much ❤
I remember watching paperman back when it came out. It seemed like the perfect blend of old and new Disney. I think at the time Disney's frozen hadn't released its first trailer, I hoped it would be in a paperman style. While I do love disneys 3d animation, there's just little details & emotions that felt lost from the move from 2d hand drawn animation. Unfortunately years went by and it seemed Disney was happy to stay in the style of frozen and tangled. But all wasn't lost, I like to think paperman inspired other studios with movies like into the spiderverse, puss in boots 2, Mitchell's vs the machines, and the Upcoming ninja turtles. Also the fantastic arcane series! And with success of these movies, Disney seems finally ready to come back to this style with Wish They also seem to take their Creators of shorts more seriously, by letting the creator of back, Domee Shi, create a full length picture with turning red So even if paperman didn't influence straight away, I like to think it gave alot of young animatiors the same feelings you had when u first saw it. And it would just take the next generation to make it a reality. John Kahrs & his team definitely deserve much more recognition tho 👏
You are totally right in that Paperman likely inspired other studios to do those films. I'd actually take it a step further and say that Paperman opened up the floodgates to show that there are plenty of styles that people can fall in love with. I think we now see a ton of different animation styles in mainstream American animation, more so than ever. It also feels like, for the first time in decades, animation studios aren't trying to copy Disney or Pixar, but are establishing their own look and feel.
I think Paperman was definitely ahead of its time. And it paved the way for Klaus, Spider-Verse and even Nimona. However Where Disney went wrong is that they didn't take that same innovation, risk taking from Paperman and apply it to their feature films. Their 3D feature films have looked the same before and after paperman. Wish I don't think is innovative enough especially after all the other films that have come out since Spider-verse.
I wonder if the 2023’s Disney used Meander technologies for its animated film “Wish”, since they planned to use it first in Moana, but scrapped the idea for it probably due to cost cutting reasons.
It was the perfect trifecta - a simple yet compelling (short) story, beautiful animation and a gorgeous soundtrack. As good as the animation is it wouldn’t have been as successful without Christophe Beck’s work. I absolutely adore Wreck it Ralph, and I saw Paperman when I saw Ralph at the theatre, and it was all I could think about afterwards. I saw Ralph three times eventually, and at least part of the reason for that was that I wanted to watch Paperman again. And again.
After not seeing this for a couple years, the music started to play in "Free Guy" when she (Jodie Comer) kissed him (Ryan rReynolds). I started to shout out PaperMan and lucky for me the theater was not the least bit crowded. I sat there and gave a few quiet tears. I loved the sound track just a touch more than the story line. I played this 3 or 4 times a day when I found it on RUclips years ago. And a Pox on those posters that put different music to it !
I bought Paperman as soon as I could after watching Wreck-It Ralph. I bought the music IMMEDIATELY. If I hadn't found the short on the Playstation Store, I probably would have bought Wreck-It Ralph just for the short (I don't know if it was bundled on the BD or not, though!).
I've watched this short more times than any other short in existence. I think I've watched Wreck-It Ralph 3-4 times. It's truly amazing, and yes, the music is incredible and deserves to just be listened to by itself. So good!
Keep in mind I have not used either software personally, however I do know that the Grease Pencil, while having similar capabilities is more limited in what it can do than Meander, but you can definitely get some of the same desired looks.
There's going to be a similar animation style for the upcoming movie Wish, though I think it's going to lean a little more toward Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse but with a little more of the classic Disney movie look. I'm really excited for Wish and Across the Spider-Verse this year ❤
Paperman, back when it was newly release, story telling-wise it felt like the least Disney. When I first saw it, I thought it from other studio, the animation was Disney, but the story & feeling were not.
This type of storytelling dates back to the 1930s and 40s when Disney was making more shorts. It would fit in well with one of the films like Melody Time where they put a bunch of shorts together. I think plenty of people are correct in saying that it feels like a Pixar short, which it does, and at the time John Lasseter was in charge of both studios so it makes sense.
I also enjoyed Wreck it Ralph. I saw it in theaters, and thought it was too good and original to be a Disney animated film at the time since Disney didn't make animated films like that at the time, but nonetheless I enjoyed it, and that film next to Princess and the Frog and Frozen brought me out of my Disney rebellious phase, and made me love Disney again as an adult
I think that we had a similar venture. I wasn't watching any Disney films really....until Princess and the Frog. Wreck It Ralph was my first Disney animated film in a theater in years though.
@@ModernMouse I'm glad I'm not the only one lol when I aged into my teens in the early 2000s I retreated from watching Disney animated films since I wanted to watch movies especially animated films with edge and humor not singy songy fairytale princess movies with cliche romances the last Disney animated film I saw before I became a teen was Brother Bear, and then I said no to Disney movies, then Princess and the Frog came out, and brought me back as did Ralph and Frozen
Hey wuz good Josh I'm digging that shirt lol. Yes I love Paperman it was a great and Beautiful animated short and I loved it's nice stylized blend of 3D animation with 2D hand-drawn aesthetics. I feel that this is one of the shorts that is responsible for the current 2D resurgence due to it's Nostalgic appeal it inspired the Netflix film Klaus, and studios are slowly getting back into 2D
Thank you! I loved making this one since it was about a short I think is one of the best of the last few decades. It was something that really captivated me when I saw it.
Never forget when I first saw this in theaters... I forgot what the Disney/Pixar movie was though... was it Cars 2? Wreck It Ralph? I forgot, but I will ALWAYS remember watching this short and loving every minute of it.
Some of the best animated films of all timer have used a form of this art style, spiderverse, puss in boots 2, arcane...... yes, and i fully believe this short filf vrought that art and those perfected it, this i what i always expected from disney.... this i what they used to do, what they used to be...
Modern Mouse I think we need a new video explaining about the Pixar Eras as the last you made was given to us back in 2018 so we could do with understanding more about films that were released since the 1990s towards now.

I've always loved the look of Paperman; thank you for explaining how it was done, and for highlighting the effects it had.
Thank you for watching!
Arcane also does a magnificent job at blending 2D and 3D styles
That's right! I need to check out more of that. It's on Netflix right?
@@ModernMouse Yup, I highly recommend it. You're in for a treat.
What separates Arcane from Paperman is that Arcane's style resembles paintings over hand drawn animation.
This is what Wish could've looked like if they really wanted a blend of 2D and 3D

You aren't the first to tell me this. I saw a bit of it. I need to watch more.
Nice video, sir! I enjoyed Paperman, but hadn’t really thought much about it’s style or influence.
It's easy to forget about it since it rarely comes up ever. History should show how influential it really was.

I loved that short as well as Feast and Boa!!! Animation is truly a wonderful medium for story telling that should not be disregarded!
Something I've been considering is a video about why animation has a stigma that its just "kids stuff". I feel like it is worth exploring.
@@ModernMouse I would love to see a video on that too 😀. You explain things in such splendid detail!
@@ModernMouse Maybe it’s because a lot of the time it’s marketed as “kids stuff”.
