This Red Death costume is a TON better than the one from the movie. When The Phantom arrived to the Masquerade in the film version, I didn't find him all that menacing. But when he appeared HERE, I was terrified. No wonder the whole party went silent! I mean LOOK AT HIM! Plus, that magic trick of his left me wondering "how'd he do that?!", while the film version left me thinking "meh, trap door".
I prefere the movie costumes. They look more hight class. Raouls costume looks like something you can buy in a bad carneval shop. And this red costume...No to much material. And Christines gown looks like a gown from a Clone-Barbie-Princess. But I like Madame Girys costume.
I love this scene, especially how the Phantom chooses to appear. I mean when you already base your entire identity around pageantry, how do you stand out when everyone else is also in gaudy wear and masks? That's how!
I also like when the Phantom appears, he taps on the guy's shoulder as if he was saying, "Ahem, you're in my way." And once the guy saw who it was, he quickly got out of the way. Lol
@@FutureBereaAlumn Uh, yeah. I think they have Body Doubles throughout The Stage Musical! Very interesting! Oh, and by the way, I'm all Team Phantom and Team Christine! A Phantom Phan through and through!
@@phantomfilmfan8 What a unnecessary and bitchy comment. You feel better now? Telling people they’re dumb on the internet and rolling your eyes make you feel REALLY COOL? Lighten up. Let others enjoy things.
I finally got to see this for the first time two years ago! It was my high school graduation present from my parents. I want to see it again so much! I'm so glad that this year they are going to have a 25th anniversary concert in the West End! And my favorite Phantom, Ramin Karimloo, is going to be portraying him in it! If you've never seen him as the Phantom, look him up here on youtube! That's how I discovered him. Even though I've never seen him live, he's still my favorite Phantom!
when i saw this at aged ten i was so amazed at how the phantom just 'appears there. now i see it and its sooooooo bleeding obvious. its still great though.
@snakeRs45543 There's actually 2 people in Phantom costumes. When he pulls his cloak over and turns around, the scene goes dark, and the double rises on a trap-door at the top of the stairs, while the first phantom goes back stage. Best part of all is that the 2 phantoms are hiding behind the skelleton mask, and nobody can see their faces, so they think its real. It's a very well thought out stunt which has been uses for many decades.
I love this show! Im seeing it again in a few weeks and im waaayy up front, so excited! The move was great, but it's sooo much more moving and amazing in person!
BLOOPER REEL: "Here I bring the finished score: _Don Juan Triumphant!_ " (He throws the manuscript into the air, only to gawp in horror as the ribbon comes loose and the pages go flying) (in a suddenly tiny voice) "....well, it *was* a finished score..." (skulks off, obviously crestfallen)
I saw the US Tour in Pittsburgh in 2006 -- I remember thinking at the time that the Phantom was *awesome,* that Firmin and Andre really stood out as good and funny in this production, and that I was bothered by Christine being off-pitch on all the high notes and not well into the role, which kind of hurt the whole production... :( But the Phantom!!! :-D It's nice to see that my memory holds up in reality, and that I wasn't the only one thinking those things!
@7.07 you can see a segment of the stair being lowered, it functions as an elevator to make the double Phantom appear behind the character with a big cloak
@ClassicsWEREandARE I kinda know what you mean. But I always thought her costume was such a contrast to the costumes around her. Hers is flowy and feminine when everyone else is a bit harsh and bizarre. It shows she's still young and "newly" in love, delighted to be a princess with her "prince" Raoul.
wonderful thank you for posting this....PO was for me the most spectacular lavish musicals I have ever seen twice on the west end and once in south africa...amazing what incredible effects they echieved on a stage without CGI or whatever it is because of this that I feel the film was an utter failure and a mammoth disappointment completely flat and lacking any kind of theatricality...this little snippet reminds me once again why I feel this way...once again thank you
I just saw the broadway at home premiere of phantom and had no idea that the phantom wears a skeleton mask so I was thoroughly scared and listened to the phantom sing in awe of his jawline. It’s really something to behold. And not even live
@gabsha1 You're wrong. They were also released to universities and small scale theatres. And thank god for that. The clips I've seen of high school productions have been deplorable.
@saychristian Well, to each their own. To Gerard's credit, when I first saw the costume in the movie, I was a little threatened by it. But nowhere near as scared as I was of THIS costume. I think the mask and lack of a hat might have had something to do with it... I dunno, I guess I prefer my Red Death costumes to be more elaborate, the best example of which being in the Robert Englund version (check it out!). The costume in the 2004 film wasn't bad as a design, but it just wasn't scary.
It's a truly beautiful piece. FRom a staging standpoint, I bet it's a pain. It's never easy to have that many people on a stage at once, especially since it's so intricate. I'm not too fond of Christine's dress, but I understand why the full skirt is necessary. But then, I hate pink, so it's probably me. :P
This was amazing in new yorks magestic theater best night of my life so far looking forward to seeing love never dies (sequel to POTO) If you haven't seen phantom of the opera go and see it as you wont regret it and its enchanting :)
anyone else here after the livestream to see how the blocking changed for the smaller space on at the RAH? just me? okay do wish they hadn't omitted all the Raoulstine dancing, would have loved to see Hadley and Sierra dance more
Drexel Gregory No trap door. The flash is there to blind your eyes for the second he ducks out of the light. Another actor then appears at the top of the stairs. Just like a magician, it is a trick of the eye.
@gabsha1 We're doing it for our Winter musical right now. We open in just less than a month actually, and we still have a lot to do. Unfortunately I'm a lowly (is that a word? xD) Freshman so I'm just chorus but it's still a really fun show.
I love all the girls outfits, 'cept for Christines, it's just too frilly and the colors don't suit her. My favorite Christine-dress for this scene will always be the one in the movie. Plus, did anyone else notice that she's wearing boots with it? Silver boots. It just doesn't work.
the 25th anniversary concert is not the original they made many scenes with different blockings. they wanted to tied the original show to the weird fanfiction "sequel" that's why threy cast ramin and sierra instead of John Owen Jones and Gina beck or sofia escobar. the only reason people think that one is the "best" is because it was professionally shot and release on dvd while videos like this one are bootlegs.

The use of fans was pretty great
I appreciate both for different reasons. I try to separate the film from the play, because they're pretty different tbf.
A lot of stages are built with secret doors for stunts exectly like this
I love the movie version

*Guy in taredactal thingy costume suddenly turns to reveal the Phantom in the Red Death costume*
Me: *Jumps* -the HECK did he come from!?!
pteradactyl
In one production the Phantom (cant remember who was playing him) hit one of the managers in the face with the book xD
Maybe Hugh Panaro?
I need to see that
I love this costume more than the one in the movie! This one is so badass!
The Phantom actually has a double who appears at the top of the steps-- it's not the same person, that's how he gets there so fast!
Thought so.
@@FutureBereaAlumn Uh, yeah. I think they have Body Doubles throughout The Stage Musical! Very interesting! Oh, and by the way, I'm all Team Phantom and Team Christine! A Phantom Phan through and through!

Wow, 14 years ago! I feel like being the old Raoul, watching this footage.
This is my favorite scene!
I have always loved Meg's costume in this scene.
THAT IS SO JOHN CUDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who could mistake his breath taking and purely seductive voice!! ahhh i love him!!!! =D
Love the pyro at the end!

my school is doing phantom this year. we are renting the costumes from this tour.. im playing christine words can not explain my excitement.
I went to see this today it was awesome. ...love this part
having just read the Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, this part makes so much more sense and is much more eerie
This is 100% John Cudia. No doubt. Most distinctive voice.
Play some other YTube clips of him and you'll see/hear.

So friggin' awesome!!!
I miss my high school days so mucchh
The skeleton outfit never gets old. Hilarious!
I love this scene too much
The actors actually came to our Broadway camp and taught us the dance :)
It was neat when they sang this song on Sabrina on Netflix!
Omg, I saw this show it's so good
@theatergeek231 Awesome! My school is doing phantom too, I'm Carlotta! Good luck in your production!

i'm in new hampshire and we just got the rights to this.
we're going up in february... hahaha.
@patmrhottiepantz they were just released this year when the Broadway tour officially ended. St. Xavier in Ohio is doing it as their spring musical
Oh my god, the german girl swing costume! YES.
anyone else here after the livestream to see how the blocking changed for the smaller space on at the RAH? just me? okay
do wish they hadn't omitted all the Raoulstine dancing, would have loved to see Hadley and Sierra dance more
This is NOT the final performance of Gary Mauer and Beth Southard. This is John Cudia, Marni Raab, and Greg Mills.
7:32 I much prefer the large sparkling explosion here to the Broadway version where its just a small fire ball
Can someone explain to me why the Phantom teleports up the stairs just to run back down? Is he just trying to get his cardio in?
he's being extra lmao
@books05 We are to! It's so fun, we're opening in 9 days I'm so excited! (Definatly going to go into withdrawls when it's over though :/)
@elphabaize omg!!! as soon as i heard "Why" immediately I knew it was john cudia!! OMG!! I LOVE HIS VOICE!!!
@SierraArielBoggess Actually a school in Kansas if you can believe that. Opening night for us is in 2 weeks I think...
At the end I was like HOW THE HELL DID HE GET UP THERE!? XD
I never quite understand what Andre and Firmin are doing right before the song starts. Are they looking for the Phantom?
And to Trainerivan. That is not Elisabeth Southard. That is Marni Raab as Christine, and Greg Mills as Raoul
Since this is just a tour, are they using a trap door or just a black cloak to make the Phantom disappear at the end?
Drexel Gregory No trap door. The flash is there to blind your eyes for the second he ducks out of the light. Another actor then appears at the top of the stairs. Just like a magician, it is a trick of the eye.
0.59 to 1.13 is my favourite part
@kicksgirl12 How was Tim Martin Gleason as the phantom? I'm seeing the tour when it comes to cleveland soon!
My school is doing this, only 6 high schools in the country are, yay us!
@gabsha1 We're doing it for our Winter musical right now. We open in just less than a month actually, and we still have a lot to do. Unfortunately I'm a lowly (is that a word? xD) Freshman so I'm just chorus but it's still a really fun show.
This is John Cudia, Marni Raab and Greg Mills...probably 2008. You should make the correction.
@Egsggum congrats on your role. and goodluck
@sephiroth87932 oh it says its from the Tour in Dallas?
oh my fucking gees this is awsome!!!!!!! I luv the plays better then the dang movie
masquerade in the west end was a sight to behold. This is not
who is the phantom?
@ShortyStudioz COOL! What school are you in? Glen Cove?
I love all the girls outfits, 'cept for Christines, it's just too frilly and the colors don't suit her. My favorite Christine-dress for this scene will always be the one in the movie. Plus, did anyone else notice that she's wearing boots with it? Silver boots. It just doesn't work.
"Why So SERIOUS???"
Who played the phantom in this one?
What are the screams at 4:08 and 4:11, I never got it, is the phantom doing stuff, or is it the odd bird dog things no idea
just the voice from the crowd of masqueraders.
Who are the actors in this cast?
Marni Raab is Christine there, Raoul is Greg Mills and I think John Cudia played the Phantom and not Gary Mauer.
@Egsggum Cool! I wish I had the range for Carlotta. It is my dream to do Phantom, but it would take a BOATLOAD of money to get the rights.
@RHCT247 Ya, I saw it come down! So thats how he did it!
@ShortyStudioz Oh, okay. What role are you playing?
Y'all get an A for effort . First time doing Masquerade?
does anyone notice that most of the people at the staircase dance slowly
It sounds like John Cudia...not Gary Mauer.
just wondering...what exactly is Meg's costume? a ringleader, or something? i just love it!
Look like Victorianesque Equestrian rider.
I always find the phantom super sexy haha
@JohannaPalacio001 I agree with you.
1:40 I noticed some different lyrics
@JohannaPalacio001 the whole musical is better than the movie!
how the hell did he dissapear and reapear in a diff spot? O_O its probably a stupid question but im tired and cant focus lol
Yeah, are you sure this is Gary and Beth? It really sounds like Marni and John...
John Cudia?!
@books05 Awesome! Let us know how it goes! Break-a-leg!
@ConcreteAngel1990 It was the sty'e of the day, you see it in old movies of the period. Like wearing one's pants below the crotch.
That's Marni Raab!
@HPAnimeFreak Not really, our High School is doing it! (:
Love this scene but in the 2004 movie. This is like... 🙄🙄🙄
the 25th anniversary concert is not the original they made many scenes with different blockings. they wanted to tied the original show to the weird fanfiction "sequel" that's why threy cast ramin and sierra instead of John Owen Jones and Gina beck or sofia escobar. the only reason people think that one is the "best" is because it was professionally shot and release on dvd while videos like this one are bootlegs.
Maybe it seems that way because of the acoustics. If this is at Fair Park Music Hall in Dallas the acoustics there really stink
@Razor9350 what? he looked so sick in the movie. the costume here just looks silly.
I know you make this comment a very long time ago. But I disagree with you + been like this since 1986!
that is not Jim Weizer. Jim actually has dirty blondish hair. The christine Is Marni Raab.
