  • Hard-core band Bleeders’ punk attitude and Ara Poutama Aotearoa - Department of Corrections come together in a surprising connection to improve the statistics of Māori incarceration and offending.
DOCUMENTARY SYNOPSIS: When Bleeders lead singer Angelo Munro (Whakatōhea) takes on the challenge to translate the band's 2002 track All That Glitters, it reveals his radical shift from anti-authority - ‘F’ the system - punk philosophy, to a dedication to change the system from within. A probation officer for three years, Angelo is committed to programmes like Hōkai Rangi, providing an opportunity for his clients to connect with tikanga. With the Hoani Waititi tikanga programme as the backdrop, the song becomes 'Tahuna Te Ao Mārama', a waiata reo Māori calling for an end to the old and urging people to rise up and start anew, with self-autonomy tino rangatiratanga.
ARTIST QUOTE: "We have had to learn how to work better with Māori, who are overrepresented in the system. Let's rise up, let's do better. We can do better as Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Corrections), we can do better as people. We can do better as a nation; we can do better as Māori."
ARTIST BIO: The Bleeders are a punk hardcore-influenced group from West Auckland, New Zealand. The group formed in 2002, consisting of members Angelo Munro (vocals), Gareth Stack (Bass), Ian King (Guitar), Aaron Goddard (Guitar) and Matt Clark (Drums). The Bleeders quickly made a name for themselves with their polished take on the then-nascent ‘post-hardcore’ sound of the early 2000s. With hits like 'All That Glitters' and 'Bleeding Heart', the band played worldwide in the 2000s and has recently reunited for a 20th anniversary tour in Aotearoa. Now, lead singer Angelo Munro who is on his own journey of reo reclamation, has decided to translate their song, 'All That Glitters', into te reo Māori to celebrate his culture and give new meaning to the waiata.
