I agree, the complexity in the ardbeg really impressed me like you mention. Even though the taste doesn’t blow me away, it’s the complexity plus it still tastes good with a generous %ABV that nudges it over the Lagavulin for me. For some people, their regions may price this too high so I always suggest just shooting for their core range instead, cheers 🥃

Can't go wrong with most of the Ardbeg core range

Oh it's absolutely better than the Laga. I absolutely loathe the Lagavulin 8 for some reason. Ardbeg 8 is not great and to be honest I don't see the point of it. I'm much more happy with the 5 or the 10. Great in depth study Tim, cheers!

Thanks. I think I'm lower on the Lag 8 than some, but not as much as you ... The Ardbeg Ten and 5 both also remain good values. Cheers.

Strange they never just gave it a name instead of an age statement.
Most newbies would go to a whisky store and if faced with an 8 or 10yr whisky.
They would pick the 10yr old nearly 100% of the time.
As you said you have “Wee Beastie” which nobody questions about how young the whisky is.
But an 8yr old whisky will always be overlooked for a 10 just because we’ve been told the older the better.
Marketing is everything look at Bruichladdich with The Classic Laddie.

Usually, it's either an age statement or a name with Ardbeg, but Wee Beastie is the exception. I wonder if the 8 is young enough to earn a name if it were in the core range ...
