    Nice unboxing; your accent somehow sounds Dutch (je klinkt nederlands).
    My first turntable was a Reloop RP-2000 MK3 and it was similar to this one in many ways.
    The tonearm assembly, the dodgy strobe indicator, the platter without magnet.
    It didn't come with a dustcover because it is a DJ turntable, but when I sold it to my parents, they wanted a dustcover, so I bought a Reloop dustcover for them.
    It has that exact same type of hinges, detachable on both sides, with those plastic squares that go into the dustcover slots.

      I'm glad that Hanpin makes good entry-level stuff for DJs it keeps the turntabling scene open to young starters.
      But those Hanpin things with the FU-700 toneams (like on the suitcase players or ATLP60) are nasty.

    For the 120x, I swapped mats for a rubber one & switched to a Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge...also using a ART USB pre-amp instead of the built in one......musical bliss !

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  4 года назад

      2m blue (or any 2m) is a severe mismatch with this arm, you are torturing that poor cart. The compliance of the cantilever's suspension is way too high for a medium-heavy arm. In all honesty, upgrading the AT-VM95E to an AT-VM95ML (by swapping the stylus) would have been a much bigger upgrade and it would actually have worked. It would've been so easy ;).
      As for the rubber mat; Try a Tonar Perspex one, worth while!

    • @dm95422
      @dm95422 4 года назад

      @@rollingtroll I set the 2m at 1.8 grams (as per instructions). This is the recommended anti balance weight for any turntable (Technics, AT, Rega, etc...) It works out fine....no damage to the needle. The AT-VM95's are always set at 2.0

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  4 года назад +2

      @@dm95422 It's not about the vertical tracking force, it's about the lateral forces of a heavy arm, the effective weight of the arm will still move left and right, pulling the cantilever from side to side. Light arms are for high compliance cartridges, heavy arms for low compliance cartridges. If you mess that up, not only does it not sound great, but you will destroy the suspension of your cartridge in a matter of no time I'm afraid.
      It's easy to sell the 2m blue for the price of what the ML stylus for the AT-VM95E costs.

    Thank you for correcting me. I probably have a defective Neoteck Digital Turntable Stylus Force Scale Gauge 0.01g/5.00g. I just stick to the Audio Technica manual and set the tracking gauge at 2 gram and so is the dial weight of the tone arm. Et voila, deeper bass, warm voice even fron Rush 2012 Album.

    First i thought this was a decent Record player , my friend has one, but when i got hold of a 1975 Sanyo direct drive,strobo,varispeed weighting in at 8 kg and compared it to the AudioTech lp120x using the same audio technica green pickup - There was absolutely no competition. The Sanyo annihalated the LP120 on all acounts. It cost med 30 euros and another 40 for the new AT pickup. Goes to show that carefully constructed record players using the right kind of material and putting high spec material were its most needed ( Tonearm, acoustic insulation) are the most needed

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  3 года назад

      The Sanyo probably would cost 900 euros today ;). And trust me, there's way better out there for little than a (n, I assume) midrange Japanese direct drive!

      @@rollingtroll Just finished the calculations. Its 687 Dollars adjusted to inflation. In Germany you were paid an median wage of 821 Dollars/monthly. Quite the price ! 75% of a monthly wage !
      The reason I got this Sanyo 1020 for 30 bucks is because nobody wants a lowly "Sanyo" even if its a great piece, a real sleeper rivaling far more costly "High End" from Technics,Marantz,Sony and Pioneer. I have to admit that Sanyo did its best to destroy their reputation with cheap mass produced plasticy things, but in the 70´s theu made great stuff. The Sanyo DCA-Range of integrated amps are really special and well built.

    Hi sir I don’t know if you will pick up on this comment but I have recently acquired this deck for playing 78 records . I have a rega new p3 as my main TT but having been gifted some unplayed 78s I thought I’d use this with a high quality 78 cart to give them opportunity to give of their best but of course I thought I’d just give it a go out of the box with a standard LP . And yes I was pleasantly surprised , to the point of thinking if I was to install a half decent cartridge it would give the p 3 a definite run for the money . Yes like you I’m not using the inbuilt phone stage and have used better phono cables , but all things considered this is a good starting point for anyone venturing into the world of hifi and who knows how far it could be pushed . Ps I had to smile as you did all the things I’d never dream of ie stop and start with the record in play , but you obviously know what you doing Best wishes and kind regards 😀👍

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  3 года назад

      Reading you loud and clear! Should be perfectly fine for 78's.
      Before you spend too much on a 78rpm cart; Don't forget that there is a shellack stylus for the cart this record player comes with.
      May I ask which phono preamp you decided to use?
      No worries about stopping the platter with a record on it, it won't hurt either record nor stylus. It would hurt the stylus is braking force was too high and the record were to spin back, as an elliptical stylus works like a barb that way. That's why DJ styli, which allow you to 'backspin', are always conical. Same on both sides!
      Enjoy your AT-LP120x!

    good video, I know what i'm getting myself into now, it looks like a decent quality player. One thing better or worse it does appear to be much lighter than the solid block of aluminum that the Technics get formed or milled out of.

      Thanks! It's definitely lighter than the technics but the technics has a slab of lead in it to make it heavier. The lightness actually adds musicality in this case, weirdly.

    Hi man thanks for this. I set up mine this afternoon. I have a question in case you or someone can give me a suggestion. I found the arm balance easily but the issue is that when i found that balance by chance or no idea how the corresponding number on the counterweight was already zero. So i just left it like that and turned the counterweight until no. 2 and adjusted the anti skate at 2 as suggested by an official set up video i found on you tube. Do you think that is ok? It seems working fine i just want to do the correct thing not to damage the cartridge or the vinyls. Thanks for your suggestion.

    I'm looking to upgrade from my first turntable which is the AT-LP60. I've had great luck with it over the past year and it has been a great start into record collecting, but it's still very low end and some records just don't play as well as others to the point where I don't even bother with them--and I've noticed those are the ones with a ton of needle talk which may or may not be a correlation..I digress..
    I've been eyeing the AT-LP120XUSB.
    Should I go for the 120xusb (I'm assuming it's very similar to the one in the video here)? Would it be much of an improvement over the LP60?
    I'm getting a bit weary since there are so many options that are much better (and obviously more expensive) but I thoroughly enjoy the physical format and I'm on a really tight budget unfortunately. 🙁
    I've heard people praise and hate on the the turntable, but I was just wondering how it might compare to the LP60. If it's a noticeable difference then I'll be set.. not worrying about potential buyer's remorse.
    I'm greatly appreciative for any feedback and help. Thanks.

      What's the rest of your setup right now?
      Also, have you considered cleaning your records? :). There's extensive methods of doing this, but honestly a damp micro fibre cloth and then a clean kitchen towel to dry (of course follow the direction of the grooves :)) already does an awful lot. And a new inner sleeve, of course.

    • @taylor22222222
      @taylor22222222 4 года назад

      @@rollingtroll Ah, thanks for the reply!
      Currently just Logitech Z625 powered speakers (which should be upgraded later, but even some digital formats of the same music sound better through these than several of my newer records).
      I've gone through extensive research on cleaning methods. Personally I take a soft cloth and clean in circular motions with a 50/50 mix of 91% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. I then spray pure distilled water and let them air dry so as to remove any fine lint left behind by the "lint-free" microfiber/soft towels. It seems to have worked well on my older, record store finds.
      For instance, I have 2 modest mouse records..both are noticably thicker than my other LPs and they have produce a ton sibilance and distortion. Same for my Hell Freezes Over-Eagles LP, Hotel California, Greatest Hits by Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin IV, Who's Next, Afterburner-ZZ Top (near end of side and especially on the last track of each side), Cosmo's Factory-CCR. All are generally thicker than some other newer and older records I have. And all appear to be in excellent shape with absolutely no warping not scratches or anything visible to the naked eye at least.
      I was thinking maybe the lp120 with it's stock and future upgradable cartridge and stylus...plus the stock one is recommended to track at 2 grams. I don't know. I could be wrong in my assumptions, but... I'm a little upset with all of these records sounding absolutely horrible and I feel like it would be insane bad luck that so many of my records would be bad pressings.
      Any input or suggestions helps me out a lot. Thanks!

  • @WR3ND

    Does it still have the caps inline on the phono out on this newer model? I have the LP120USB (the older version with the weak anti-skate spring), and am considering maybe getting the newer LP120XUSBBT, or whatever they're calling it. From what I can see on-line, the overall fit and finish on my older version seems nicer, but sound quality is the main concern, and there is a slight noise whine on my table. Thanks.

    • @stevesstuff1450
      @stevesstuff1450 4 года назад +1

      There are two tiny inline caps on the output traces of the older 120USB, along with two inline inductors ...these can be easily and successfully removed, which improves the performance when using the built-in preamp, and make it totally silent (as though it's not there) if running out to an external preamp/amp setup.... If you do the mod, you need small jumper wires to bridge the gap left by the inductors. It's quick and easy to do.
      This video: ruclips.net/video/4NT67ii04uQ/видео.html shows the positions of the offending parts, before he then goes and takes out the whole thing!! You don't need to do that. Remove those 4 small items, and your LP120 will sound as though that poor existing preamp has been removed !
      I did this to mine, and it's SO much better for it..!! :-)
      Hopefully the new LP120X version doesn't have any inline caps/inductors in the (as quoted) improved preamp.. ;-)

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  4 года назад

      You need speakers and an amplifier, or speakers with a built in amplifier (officially these are called active speakers or powered speakers). Old desktop computer speakers will work just fine. You can even buy them new for cheap. Logitech has very acceptable ones for under 50 USD. Or maybe you already have a Bluetooth speaker? With an RCA to minijack cable (2-5 USD) you can also hook it up to every Bluetooth speaker that has an aux in. I highly recommend the IKEA Eneby 20 for that. The thing is stupidly good for the money. The record player itself has no built in speakers.
      If you want to save some money though and you don't care about looks too much, consider the atlp60. It's way smaller and has the same basic functionality. You will still need speakers though!

    • @Roniv664

      The Rolling Troll someone had mentioned these speakers on amazon that are the Micca PB42X powered speakers with a built in amp that are $120 on amazon!!!! The thing I’m kind of afraid of is buying these speakers and having it just sound like I’m playing music off of my phone....
      Maybe I’m just overthinking it but do record people like the sound of the music played from a record player or it just for the cool vinyl collecting and for using the record player itself.
      And no I don’t have a Bluetooth speaker 😭 so now I’m debating...should I buy a Bluetooth speaker with the cord you mentioned or is there a cool speaker that can give the vinyls a “vintage” sound.
      Sorry I probably sound so silly 😹

    • @rollingtroll

      @@Roniv664 A pair of speakers are definitely not going to sound like your phone, no worries :). Audio hasn't sounded specifically "vintage" since the sixties, really sound hasn't changed much in the last 60 years. I don't know the speakers that you mention but I'm sure they will perform fine. If there's an IKEA near you I would give the Eneby 20 a try, with a cable. It's a safe bet at 60 bucks and it sounds better than most affordable speakers. It also looks retro. Great video! What receiver and speakers do you recommend?

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  5 лет назад +5

      That depends on so many things that I cannot just answer. First; Amplifier, not receiver. It's always the better option. Less compromise. Second; If you want stereo, go for a stereo amplifier, not surround. Because again, compromise. Avoid Sony, sound-wise. Look for the slightly more upmarket brands if you have a little money to spend (Rotel, NAD, Cambridge, Yamaha, Arcam, Audiolab). Also consider if you need an amplifier. Are you just going to hook up a record player? YOu may as well get active speakers (speakers with built in amplifier). If you don't want that and you only have very little to spend, Yamaha and Pioneer make sub-200 dollar amps that are not shit. If you don't mind second hand, go for something that's less than 25 years old, amplifiers don't age gracefully. The NAD 3020E is a great affordable amp, but most Pioneer and Technics amps from the nineties sound really not bad at all. Yamaha is a solid second hand bet as well.
      Bare in mind that record players give off a very low signal unless they have a built in preamplifier. This AT-LP120x has a built in pre, and a good one at that. If you buy another record player that doesn't have this, make sure your amplifier either has one (easy to see, it will have an imput market 'phono') or get a seperate preamp (the Analogis EasyPhono is available everywhere and not bad for the price).
      As for speakers; The smaller your room, the smaller your speakers. Big speakers produce big bass and big bass has a long wavelength, it will just reach the end of your room, bounce back and cancel itself out. Usually people have speakers that are too big for the room. Klipsch has nice new options, but second hand, depending where you are, the Boston A25, Wharfedale diamond III and Philips 482/483 are great speakers. If you have a slightly bigger room (say at least 25m2) you could look at the Tannoy R2. Amazing speaker, cheap as chips, but it does demand a solid amplifier so don't skim on that too much. There's loads of speakers out there that are good and overlooked so I could make this post into a full book.
      Let me know
      - Budget
      - Room dimensions (length x width)
      - What you have right now and how you like it

      The Rolling Troll thanks for replying! This will be a gift. I'm planning on buying the AT LP 120X with the Yamaha RS 202BL. The living room is medium size and we live in an apartment. I was thinking of the Klipsch bookshelf or floor speakers. Not sure if I'm missing anything for that set up or just generally

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  5 лет назад +1

      @@claudiareyes9036 Is there a reason you're not going for the A-S201 by Yamaha? If there's no reason, grab that one ;).
      "Medium size" is a hard one to respond to. Do you have dimensions for me? Doesn't have to be too precise.
      I personally think the cheap, small Klipsch speakers outperform the cheap, bigger Klipsch speakers. If you want floorstanders, go one model line up with Klipsch, or consider a pair of second hand Tannoy R2.
      If you don't mind second hand, the Tannoy M2 is also a really nice, slightly larger bookshelf. If you find (or create, anything goes as long as it's solid and a bit heavy) some nice stands to put them on, they may be exactly right for a 'medium sized' room, if there's ever such a thing :D.
      That said, if you are comparing speakers at a shop somewhere, don't forget to also check ELAC and Boston Acoustics. Also if you don't listen loud at home, don't listen loud during your test. Speakers tend to get obtrusive when playing at lower levels, loud is easy :D.
      The only thing I'd like to recommend you is to not go for the cheapest speaker cables. Anything with a 2.5mm2 core made of oxygen free copper is absolutely acceptable. Price wise you should be able to get that well under 3 dollars US (not sure where you are) per meter.
      Also make sure your speaker cables are of equal length. The longer the cable, the more sound you will lose (cables have a resistance) so all of your sound will pull to one side with two different lengths.
      Enjoy :D.

    Hi The Rolling Troll, thank you very much for the video and for all the answers to the comments. Very helpful.
    A couple of months ago I bought the AT-LP120XUSB. It's truly a great turntable that I enjoy very much. Nevertheless I did a couple of upgrades partially based on your video and the comments (Tonar Perspex Mat, AT-VMN95ML, AT-618 record stabilizer, tonearm dampening fluid...), but I still have a couple of questions.
    First of all concerning the alignment. I bought a Tonar protractor and a Schön Schablone. Using these two tools I come up with a setting in which the cartridge is almost all the way up in the head shell. Where as originally it came with the cartridge perfectly in the middle, now it has moved to the outer edge with less than 2mm left. Is this normal?
    Secondly concerning the anti-skating. I bought the Ortofon test record and the last couple of tracks are designed to set the VTF and the anti-skating (by ear). The cartridge should be able to track the test signals (315 HZ recorded at increasing pick amplitudes of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 micrometers) without distortion. According to the instructions, if both the right and the left channel fail to track properly the VTF should be increased. In case of differing tracking ability in the left and right channel, anti-skating needs to be readjusted.
    I have to go all the way up to a VTF of 2,2gr and an anti-skating setting of 2,25 to get the AT-LP120XUSB and the VM95ML to play the track of 100 micrometer without distortion. Again; is this a realistic setting? And are there any drawbacks to a hight VTF?
    Finally, in the comments you refer to a method for setting the anti-skating using a test record and a oscilloscope (device or software). Can you point me in the direction of a tutorial or something dealing with this. And do you think that the Ortofon test record is suitable for this method?
    Thank you very much.

      Here's something interesting; My other record player is a Clearaudio Champion Level 1. Google it. So when this guy says that AT is not half bad, I actually have a reference or two ;). Honestly, it's an amazing machine. I
      dare to say it's the best sounding record player under 500 euros, with the best sounding (built in) preamplifier under 100 euros. It's a bit of a gem this.
      Audiotechnica's Headphones are great as well these days. Honestly the whole brand is doing really nice stuff nowadays.

      The Rolling Troll I recently bought this same turntable and paired it with Edifier 1850’s and I’m pretty impressed with the sound.
      I’ve only recently started buying vinyl again, like a lot of people I got lured by the CD in the 80’s 😉 So this was a nice entry level choice for me.
      Do you think it’s worth upgrading the stylus? The two choices in my price range are the VM95EM which is the “NudeDiamond” type at about €95 or the next one up, the VM95ML Line Contact Stylus which is about €170.
      According to the reviewer on AV Forums at least, the VM95ML is the more worthwhile upgrade, but is spending pretty much what I spent for the whole turntable for a stylus really going to be worth it sound wise?
      Thanks
      Rob

      @@robkennedyphotography1766 Hey Rob, the 'problem' with audio is that you have to keep your rig balanced. There's no use buying expensive speakers if your source isn't up to snuff, and vice versa. What I would recommend you'd do is first of all enjoy the rig for a few months. See if you like the tonal balance. Then if it turns out you want something a bit mellower sounding, maybe try swapping the cart for a Nagaoka MP-110 or Goldring 2100. They match the arm weight-wise (going to ge technical now, you can skip this part if you just want recommendations but it could be useful for future cart purchases; the heavier the arm, the stiffer the stylus suspension has to be otherwise you'll get some messed up resonances, there's actually a number for it under the name of 'compliance' but not all companies measure compliance identically. for this arm you want a compliance number at 10hz of between 10 and 14ish. Problem is, some companies measure it at 100hz, which will give you half the amount (so compliance at 100hz x2 = compliance at 10hz) and some companies measure compliance statically, which gives you twice the amount (so static compliance /10 gives you the compliance at 10hz).
      If it turns out you do like the sound of the AT, I'd go for the ML, it's just a much more refined sounding option. Do bare in mind that when you do that, your record player will outperform your speakers. Depending on your room size you may want to be looking out for a pair of Adam A5 or A7. They are monitors, so if you don't sit close to them, they won't work. There's plenty of speakers I'd like to recommend (Boston A25, a gem and dirt cheap!) but those aren't active.
      Also bare in mind that this is about as far as you want to go with this record player. The thing is amazing value for money, but I'd stay below the 200 euro mark, cartridge wise.
      What is a nice thing to do though is to figure out how to properly mount the cart (using a protractor) and how to properly set your anti skating (using a test record and an oscilloscope. The latter can be your computer, doesn't have to be a hardware scope. You can get so much more out of a record player if you set it up properly. In the meantime, since we're using the same cart; Move the cartridge to about 1/5th from the front of the shell instead of in the middle, where it is now, and set the anti skate so the cartridge 'drops' in the groove neatly every time. If it skips inwards, add some anti skate, if it sort of can't figure out where the groove is every now and then, or even skips outwards, lower the anti skate. It needs to sink into the groove smoothly every time you put on a record. This gets you to about 80% of where you need to be, but those last 20% are worth getting a test record for ;).
      Enjoy!

      The Rolling Troll Thank you kindly for the quick reply 😊
      When I first set it up I looked up a few videos and set up the anti skate using a CD, I don’t own a blank test record yet and found that tip on another audiophile channel. As it turned out, the recommended setting was slightly out and the stylus just moved inwards. I played around till I got it to stay put when lowered.
      I haven’t done the protractor thing yet...that looks scarier 😂
      I will take your advice though and give it another month or so of listening and see if anything bothers me. Finding time to just sit and listen to a record with no distraction is not always easy 🙈
      Anyway...thanks again for your advice 🤙
      Rob

      @@robkennedyphotography1766 hey Rob, notification worked! I just happened to notice your response really quick.
      Now, using a blank record to set anti skating does not work. It's a common myth and even serious audiophiles use it, but it's completely pointless. The only proper way of doing it is really with a test record that has signals so loud it pretty much makes the stylus rattle. You can set this rattle (shown as distortion instead of a nice round wave on a scope) so that it's equal on both channels. After that you keep pushing the weight up until it gives you a clear signal, then you go to the next (louder) test track, and louder, and louder. I managed to almost get to the ridiculous 18dB's my test record has, but honestly if you can get 16dB to be distortion free without surpassing the maximum weight your cartridge allows, you're there.
      The method I mentioned is obvoiusly a bit of a bodge job but since I have the test record and scope to check it, I found out it gets you quite close. I should put a tutorial online for that some day.
      As long as you stick to this cart you can just move the cartridge forward to about 1/5th of the slots it can move in. It won't be perfect but it'll definitely be a lot better than it is now, AT just put it slap bang in the middle when shipping this record player, because no one cares anyway :D.

      It's not that hard to tell de visual differences between the two if you have some experience with one of both products.
      Even differences between the different models of the same 1200 series are easy to recognize.

      I also have a Micro Seiki BL51 and a completely different rig all together. If you call this one junk, you haven't actually listened to one. It's a good little record player, and perfect for digitizing records that had a bit of a rough life. I also use it for 78's, the Thorens couldn't do that.
