  • We’re ready to fit the jaw liners on the vise. Precision fitting is required to make sure they don’t touch the bars and sit in the correct position. Paul adds leather on the outside jaw to increase grip, before applying a finish.

I like the fact that you show how to build a bench without using all types of expensive machinery that most don't have when building their first bench. I also like your manner of teaching and the humility that comes through despite the high level of expertise and competence you display. Thank you for passing on your skills to everyone.

Great comment. This may be even more true now as RUclips Woodworking has really distorted peoples’ expectations of what a woodshop looks like. This is not unique to woodworking mind you but I think it creates a lot of barriers to the craft. Paul Sellers is a woodworker in the truest sense who happens to make videos for educational purposes.

After watching so many other bench videos that were 15 minutes in length and took thousands of dollars of power equipment, I was so pleased to watch your video. For someone like me that has limited resources, experience and space, it was a pleasure and inspiration watching you work with basic tools and build a bench that could be handed down to the next generation. Thank you for sharing this and all of your other videos.

Literally just finished the workbench build today (it took me evrer so 'slightly' longer than the video series), never done anything like this before and it's great - solid as a rock and I am now able to use a vice for the very first time while I embark on making the drawers, with half lap dovetail joints - I didn't even know what these were 2 months ago!. Thank you so very much.

I just rewatched this series for the second time. The first, 4 years ago I had no idea what was going on. Got your book. Today I’m finishing up a small storage cabinet in the bath. Now, I am ready to start my workbench!

Watched the series again, what a treat.
Built my workbench 4,5 years ago. It has little in common with this one. I wanted a solid top, so approns had to go. Then the legs become connected with four beams mortised and tenoned. Had only one long clamp, so used draw bores.
All is different (except vice jaws), but without this series I doubt I would not have succeeded. It is *my* ultimate workbench, and I love using it. Thank you Paul.

I just finished MY workbench that I started in October 2021. I have adapted it to make a 4-foot bench, much of it was with old lumber I had hanging around, some of which had been used as concrete forms and a Lowes Kobalt plane which led to much frustration. After buying my Stanley #4 and converting the Kobalt plane to a scrub plane, thing started becoming easier at each step in the process. I had never done much more then sanding with an electric sander and some hand sawing before this project. But after adjusting my work after each mishap and miscalculation, I'm glad to say I'm proud of the outcome especially when I know what it is made of.
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and a bit of your knowledge with us.

Finally finished my build of this, and it does indeed feel good!
The thing is rock solid although I got a lot of tear out on the top. I can fix that later when my skill level has improved but, for now, I am in business!
Many thanks to Paul for the series.

Just finished watching the series. What an excellent tutorial of many subjects. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos. I particularly like how you always focus on sharing knowledge rather than pushing expensive tools. Last night I found an old Stanley No 4 Bailey model and will start the refurbishing today. Your videos on sharpening and reconditioning have also been a huge help. Thanks again Paul looking forward to seeing many more. Would love to see a series on how you build the stool that is in the background!

This is for me with simple means, on a very high level. Without advertising for specific manufacturers or products, as is common on many so-called craft channels here in Germany. There, most "hobby cellars or private workshops" are equipped with the most expensive machines, which are probably found in the least private households. Here on this channel, everything is explained super, I hope you continue to do so for a long time. Greetings from Germany

Great series Paul - I built one similar from your previous series - total cost was less that £75 for materials + a vice reclaimed from a previous bench. the design works flawlessly, and it's rock solid, with zero racking, even when going at a board like a barbarian with a scrub plane. Many thanks and keep up your amazing work.

    Terrific series of videos!!
I enjoyed watching the parts where you actually show the work you are doing in real time. Most of the time other woodworking videos just tell you what they are about to do then don’t show the work they just cut to the end and say see what I did there. Not you! Lol. You show the work being done with a plane for 5-10 minutes of going back and forth. Also, you show your chisel work as you do it. Not just one or two chops lol you show what it actually takes to do a mortise and tenon from start to finish! Bravo!
I plan on watching this entire series again on a big screen in my shop so I can follow along as I build this beautiful bench.
    Cheers mate

Absolutely beautiful Paul... What a joy applying the finish coat after everything is said & done. Nice touch on the vise jaws too. I used an oil based stain & clear poly on my bench. I used (2) coats of Cabot Gunstock stain & (3) coats of Minwax Clear Satin polyurethane. Both the stain & clear were 220'd between coats. I do indeed understand that feeling when it all comes to completion.
Excellent presentation on all the episodes with this workbench... After watching this I feel inspired to incorporate the use of my hand tools more often in conjunction with some of my power tools...
