- www.homebuildi... Click on this link to learn more about plumbing, house framing and home repairs. This video will provide you with a simple math formula that can be used to calculate the length of different sized plumbing pipes installed or drilled through wood framed floor joist that might need to run through 10 or 20 feet lengths in joist.
Great video. We need more like this. Provide a fundamental understanding so we can apply to our specific needs. A+
Absolutely!
Love your channel I've been doing construction my whole life never did no Plumbing I'm redoing my house and I'm watching your videos to make sure I'm doing my Plumbing right thank you
Just make sure you check with your local building department first. Some of my information might be outdated or won't work in every situation. That's also the reason I don't provide structural engineering or lumber sizes that will work all over the world.
Video is excellent. Thank you.
Thank you too!
What a coincidence, I am studying for home inspection and this video pops up. Great video and explanation.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video, what a about a trimjoist combo as a alternative upgrade
Great info, thanks!
Tank you so much
All your videos are educational in that I am learning what to watch out for when I grt brilliant ideas about remodelling 😅
Awesome and thanks for letting us know.
Thanks for the video
You're welcome and thanks for watching and providing kind and sincere comments on a lot of our videos.
Incredibly helpful. Thank you.
You're very welcome and thanks for watching.
Nice video I have a question though if you divide by .25 the floor joists are not 12 inches apart. Does that mean you’re going to get a slope under a 1/4 of an inch per foot?
renovating my kitchen, plan to run a 3" drain pipe through 5 solid wood joists of 8", the holes that run the drain pipe are over 3" Dia, so I want to use the metal joist reinforcement plate to support the joists. it is possible? Thanks.
Is the same calculation applicable for the Truss Joints or I-joists ? - Thank you!
Not really, but you can usually find more information at the truss joist installation instructions or their website.
what are the options for 4 inch ducting for a cooker hood extractor? not going to be able to drill a 4 inch hole in a joist thats for sure. and in my case there is no room below the ceiling to run it along the corner of the ceiling and box it in.
If possible better to drop down and tie into the waste line below structure. Remodel is a challenge.
Thank you so much for the video🎉
No problem 😊
I wonder if it's possible to bolt some 1/4 of an inch steel plates to reinforce the joists - that way it should be possible to drill without limitations
I've seen a Similar thing in roof sistering so I think you're right
I've never used quarter-inch steel plates to reinforce pipes drilled through joist or seen it recommended by a structural engineer, if that helps in any way.
@@gregvancom well it would reinforce the joists, not the pipe
there are steel plates with a central hole designed to support joists. They are engineer certified and strengthen the joist more than sistering.
Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
Glad you liked it and thanks for letting us know.
this video is awesome!
Thanks.
a friend just got tagged The inspector told him he wasnt allowed to drill any holes in the center parts of a floor or ceiling joist . He must stay on the outer 1/3 areas of the beams
Been there before and feel their pain.
That inspector should find employment where intelligence is not required.
when you say you can drill a hole anywhere in the floor joist as long as its not the top or bottom 2 inches wouldnt going directly in the middle of the joist cause it to flex down? just trying to figure out the middle third you were discussing...
It could and I'm on your side with this one. I don't like drilling any holes and would suggest contacting an engineer for more information. This video was based on the information found in the International Building Code Books that are used by building professionals.
@@gregvancom 10-4 i didnt even see i got a reply until now! i appreciate it.
Super useful, much appreciated.
2x10 =9.25 and 2x12 =11.25
Then 2x6 is 5.25?
@@gregvancom no 2x6s are 1.5x5.5 The nominal 2x8 and thicker is where the boards lose another real 1/4” thickness
Do these codes apply to every state?
It's a standard construction method, but just to be on the safe side, you should always verify with local building authorities or engineers.
Hello! Do you have an email? I have some very simple (probably simple I woke think for someone like you) questions about a carport conversion and would love if I could pay for a short video call. You seem to have a lot of info. Want to enclose an attached carport to expand my kitchen before I update it all. Need to add in a washer dryer room mostly. Can't seem to find your email though... Looked on your site and the contract link in RUclips is broken l. Thanks in advance! I appreciate what you do!
After some more research it seems that footers of some sort are required. You can't simply build in top of the current concrete pad. It seems that would be a whole hell of a lotta work to pull up sections of the pad to pour in footers for an expansion.
You can go to our website and there should be a link in the video description comment area in all of our videos to the website. I also do not offer any type of consultation except for through email. Don't forget to check out the website for more videos.
Do I-Joists have same limits?
Yes, but I would read the manufactures installation instructions for more advice.
Too bad that install would be literally hell. There's no easy way to install that pipe in that location...
One piece at a time with lots of couplings.
Nominal 2x12 are Real 1.5x11.25
In some places, I've worked with 11.5 for years in California.
@@gregvancom really? i had just assumed all commercially produced nominal lumber in the us had the same real dimensions. thanks for your quick reply!
6" pipe in 2x8 okay?😂
No way you need 2inches both top and bottom min 2x10
I think he was kidding.
