I had a friend named Mark Lally that was friends with Chad Channing in high school. Cobain was the first person to smoke him out. They met Kurt at a Umen show. Kurt would walk around with a cane that had a crystal ball on top of it. Kurt would keep his pot under the crystal ball. I just thought I would share. I love stories like that. Thanks for posting these videos.
the Observer that’s how YT seems to work these days. Thank you for this insight man, It's really wonderful to hear these stories, so many thoughts on how he was as a person outside of the music. I love it.
Man your channel is the best channel I have came across on here in a long time. Nirvana honestly changed my life. Their music changed the way I listen and looked at music. Keep the videos coming buddy
Wow, thanks for sharing this stuff! I was in a band (Counterpoint) around the same time as Nirvana, but we were on the East Coast. It must have been so exciting to be around that scene, especially in the beginning!!!
Really appreciate seeing your videos Observer! It would be great if other people who new Kurt and the band members from that time would share and upload some of their own memories. I was thirteen when Kurt Cobain passed away. I had only just got into the band after seeing them on "Rage" which was Australia's version of MTV at the time. It was a big shock when I found out that he had died. No one in my age group could understand why he would make a decision like that but we all got into the music more and more after. My fondest memories of listing to Nirvana back in the day was the song "Lithium". Most of their songs were structured the same with small verses and big choruses, but that song would always make you want to get out of your chair and let loose, go nuts and lose yourself. Now that I am a bit older and wiser, and learnt the lessons that come with marriage and divorce, I have accepted his passing. It's just a shame that he didn't speak out. There must have been people in his circle and the band that would have helped and protected him if only they new what was going on. It was not very common and still isn't today for men to speak out and say that they are a victims of abuse in a marriage. The early nineties was a great era! The Seattle/Washington grunge invasion was new, exciting and original.
I remember Subvert. I used to go to the Tacoma World Theater all the time. Following Forced Entry and Coven I got turned onto the World Theater. I loved that place.
Thanks for sharing this with all, it is really rare and something to get an insight as personal as this, Kurt was an amazing artist, musician and from the sounds of it person to hang out with. Wish he was still here, and a shame how things happened the way they did. You mentioned in comments for Beehive live gig '91 something about " I have some weird stories that happened to me around Kurt's death. It's kind of supernatural. It's a hard story to tell. Ive kept it pretty quiet for a long time. A couple are just strange coincidences."... were you thinking of posting these? The Dale Demo, could you please post the order of the songs? Thanks.
After this I found the community world theater shows by skid row , I must have heard the one you were at by now , it’s amazing to think how far Nirvana and Kurt cane
All these videos made my night. You're like a missing piece us hardcore nirvana fans wanted to put together in the huge "nirvana before nirvana" puzzle. This is fucking cool as hell.
Thanks! I really don't know how much I have to offer fans, but I am also a fan and I don't want good stories to fade away. I was one of the first to really give a shit about Nirvana and I never stopped. All the response is more then I expected
I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to Chris and the nevermind album at the 6th and Laurence house in Tacoma. They weren't famous yet(album not yet released) but you told us all they were about to be. You were right.
Yep you were there! I definatly did not think they would be like the Beatles huge. I think you were there when Krist brought over rough mixes of Smellls without vocals. There were some other songs? I don't remember
It was the whole album plus out takes as I remember it. They had recorded Kurt throwing up in the studio toilet all the while teasing him that he was a superstar! What an incredible night. Krist was prognosticating about Arnold Schwarzenegger's political ambitions while playing with a naked Predetor Arnold GI Joe type toy!
Man what a cool ass set of memories. I can easily envision this because we had such similar circles dude. Good stuff brother. Everyone, please: *_LIKE, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE!_*
Hey man this has been a really interesting video and I’m very much enjoying getting a bigger understand of Kurt cobain the person through your channel. I have a few questions about him. Did Kurt and Krist have a close bond? What was Kurt’s goal through playing music? Like did he want to express himself or was there something that he was working towards? What sort of things would make him happy? If Kurt was still with us what do you think he would be like? Do you think he would still be making music? Thank you again for sharing your expierences with him. Kurt has touched my life in ways I cannot begin explain.
I'm pretty sure all of the songs featured on the "Dale Demo" (the one I think you are mentioning) are officially released in various forms: Floyd, Paper Cuts and Downer on Bleach, Mexican Seafood on teriyaki Asthma, Beeswax, Hairspray Queen and Aero Zepplin on incesticide and If You Must and Pen Cap Chew were included in the boxset.
Yes, But they have never released all of the songs together on one album. Like I was saying you would have to put them all on one cd together and then listen to it. It is the first album but Sub pop did not want to release it as a complete album.
I actually found a bunch of old flyers from the early days from when my dad was in a band called wretched existence of the Melvins and nirvana 2nd lining them and a few other bands and I’m sure I got a flyer or to with your band on the flyers kinda blow my mind lol being that I’m 30 now
Hey, Observer... I met you thru some mutual friends, Julia & Darci, here in Tacoma at the Valley Tavern where my last band Snakes on Champagne played at. (Just saw Zeke there recently) I think your band was playing the night I met you. You had a Battalion of Saints T-shirt on and that sparked a conversation between us...anyway I think it's awesome I stumbled across your RUclips channel (we are already Facebook friends). I was just gonna ask you about the time you tried drums out for Nirvana but your video has you talking about it right now as I write this..Lol I'm from SF originally and lived in Central Coast and So Cal as well. I played in a lot of punk bands like The Breakouts, Spit a Kiss, Bite, The Lowdowns, etc. during mid-late 80's thru late 90's you probably heard of. You mentioned Fitz of Depression, wow! Haven't heard that name in a long time! I hung out with them driving around SF's Mission District late one night after a show they played I believe at the Chameleon Club during early to mid 90's and seen quite a few of their other shows as well. I also remember the Nirvana, L7, Sister Double Happiness show at the Warfield in SF too... I think it's really cool that Krist played with SF's FLIPPER for quite a few shows years after Nirvana. FLIPPER were a favorite of mine as a teen and used to play all over SF. Dropping LSD and going to see FLIPPER was how we had fun back in those daze and as natural and as American as apple pie...Lol Anyway, I digress...I'm so stoked I found your channel and just subscribed and wanted to say, 'Hi". See ya around, man!
The valley tavern on Puyallup ave. Right next to the western R cafe. (The road starts being called highway 99 just after crossing the bridge over the river.)
Is there any posible way to listen to that first 10 song ep? That would be something. Thanks for the videos and stories, it makes us feel closer to our idol. (Kurt)
Your brother played in Soilent Green? I thought that was a metal band in New Orleans? I guess this was a different band. Are there any videos off them on RUclips or anywhere? Thanks!
I wish there were more personal stories like this, the media has really warped the Nirvana story, and written what they wanted about who they were, their influences, not to mention painting Kurt as some sacred fallen rock god/martyr, when he wasn't! To me, when I hear stories from people who were actually there and actually knew them it just sounds far, far more down to earth, that these were just really cool kids who played at house shows and bars and recorded these tapes and these really neat, heavy (and sloppy!) tunes, like Paper Cuts, Scoff, Curmudgeon, Pen Cap Chew, Floyd The Barber, Oh The Guilt, etc. that weren't hardcore punk, but they weren't thrash metal either --- bet you'll never hear those on radio between the million Lithium/SLTS playthroughs, haha.
Is that 4 Tape recording before the Incesticide recordings and have you uploaded them yet? I'm dying to hear it! My apologies if you already have done so but I haven't been able to find it. Cheers buddy!
There's a great musician in Tempe, he writes, sings and plays guitar for Banana Gun. He's probably too young to be the same guy, but, his name is Kevin Lloyd.
Did you ever upload those 4 tapes, John? If not, no big deal but it would be awesome if you could get around to it. Thanks for all of these awesome videos, buddy.
I've been saying for a few years that they should do what Metallica did with No Life Til Leather and release a special cassette only version of that first demo tape for Record Store Day or something. Anyways, not sure if you're aware, but the soundboard recording of the show at the Community World Theater with Dale just surfaced last year, they play all the songs from the demo in order plus a few that they didn't record.
I recently found a video with Buzz talking about how Montage of Heck is BS. What are your thoughts on this? Sorry if you have already made a video about it, I haven't bothered to check.
Man, just by listening to this story agh, i wish i was born like in your times and could play at gigs and shows and stuff , being a 16 year old punk rock fan trying to start a band or even buy or get equipment is hard cause of money or the fact that not everyone in the area likes punk and stuff , so i cant really start a band , i practice a lot and stuff but i can’t jam with anyone that likes the same stuff, most of the kids my age like new hip hop and new rap , and stuff like that :\ , but man how lucky were you to like play in a band and stuff and got to meet kurt and asked to jam with him , great story man. i swear i wish i was born in the 70s or something
Anybody that thinks this dude is lying is a real nerd. This dude seems honest. Would like to hear the band he was in. Obviously his story checks out. It’s not like he made up all this just to get views. wtf.
I have posted LOTS of my music on here. Current bands. You could watch so much would might surly get board. I have no time for haters or whatever they are. So Hello!! Thanks for listening and watching
Why do all the "stories" they print say stuff like: Kurt tried out for the Melvins, he was their roadie, etc. You just told us that Krist was their roadie....Thanks for telling us the true stories!!
I know Dale and from what he's said I don't think Kurt ever "tried out" for Melvins, but I think that he wanted to play with them but Buzz didn't think he was good enough at that point. OTOH Kurt did invite Dale to be Nirvana's drummer and Dale considered it but decided to stick with Melvins. Dale recorded the demo tapes as a favor to Kurt just before he and Buzz moved to San Francisco.
This was the greatest time in music history, hell everything was just so different/better. Miss the era. Did you ever meet Layne Staley? What's wrong w/your shirt tho?
Did you ever get to meet Pat Smear of the Germs later on when he was playing with Kurt? I loved the Germs a lot as a kid & still listen to the records...I have a "Germs" Skull & crossrigs tattoo that was covered up many years ago but you can still read the words Germs under the cover up,Lol. I used to hang out with Germs drummer Don Bolles from time to time in the 90's. I think he was living in SF at the time I befriended him and saw him at various local shows. I have no Idea what ever happened to him or if he started playing in any more bands after 45 Grave. Great drummer and really all around cool guy. I think it's really neat how Pat Smear ended up playing 2nd guitar with Nirvana on many occasions.
I did meet him briefly at the Germs reunion. Also in Seattle I met a guy that played drums in the Germs Robert Henley. I did a short phone interview with him
Very cool. He's a fascinating character and unique guitarist. Thanks for the reply. Sorry it took so long getting back. I've been dealing with a lot of medical appointments and was recently diagnosed with Venous reflux disease in both of my lower legs and am now awaiting surgery. Its in advanced stages and causes me a lot of pain and leg fatigue. The surgery is called Venefit Procedure and suppose to really help. I've been clean for about 12+ years now, and this disease is caused from years of shooting speedballs (coke & heroin) in my 20's throughout the 90's, repeatedly into the veins of my lower calves after my mainlines collapsed in my arms and i could no longer register there. Also, years of hard physical labor, construction & landscaping had attributed to it as well..It's all pretty scary but I'm just lucky to still be alive. I regret every day from my years of addiction...All I can do now is forgive myself & move forward at age 45, and try to live life the best i know how and hope that others may learn from my mistakes.
Release the tape on RUclips dude! There’s no copyright if you ain’t making money off it. You can copyright address all the relevant parties and make a legion of fans of nirvana and yourself very happy.
man if Kurt asked me to join his band, I would have dropped everything and been on it. had u have known that back then, u would have done the same thing probably yeah?
oh yeah for sure. I was in high school at that moment they asked me also in a really busy punk called Subvert. and I was still in a some what controlling family situation. But I did want to jam with them. I got to a few times. More stories
Thanks for sharing. Since you we're in that massive seen back then, how about some of the other ppl you met from back then, & your first time meeting them.. Did you ever meet Andrew Woods,Chris Cornell...etc. Please share, & thanks again
yes I did meet Andrew when he was in Malfunkshun. Noxious fumes played with the a couple times. GREAT IDEA I will do a video on that also I have a story about Chris Cornell
Hey, I remember Subvert! My friends and I would see you guys with bands like Jesters of Chaos, Aspirin Feast, Christ on a Crutch, etc. Your singer (Eric?) - big guy, we were actually kind of intimidated. I believe I even have some vinyl of yours. Good times.
I never thought Kurt was shy. He was one to talk but not one to talk shit. He could be funny but that would more often depend on who he was around. Everyone holds countless emotions depending on the circumstances.
Yeah I first partied w/ Kris and Kurt at the Witchy Poo house in Olympia. Kurt was on the couch w the girls and we were raging in the kitchen w/ Kris. I would later sit and get high w/ Kurt in a little room on Capitol Hill. I remember Noxious fumes, just the name. How about Fitz of Depression? Good band, I think we played w/ them in Seattle. --Dave Doberman
Did you ever think Nirvana would get as huge as they got when you first saw them? Or did you think they were a great band that would unfortunately never make it to nothing?
did you happen to play or know much about metal church?...they built themselves up in aberdeen either right b4 nirvana or same time dont quite remember
yes it was, i was into ratt, motley crue, beastie boys, metal church was pretty hard for the time and my parents already had a hard enuff time allowing me to listen to ozzy...
Really ? I remember their 1st 3 albums in the 80s , one of their videos for their 3rd album being on MTV back in the day , for " badlands " ( if I´m not mistaken ) - loved that stuff , their 3rd album was such a great Metal record , after that lost track of them or they disbanded for sometime ... dunno, but now you´ve got me curious ... it´s been so long .
Why is it so hard to imagine Kurt & Krist as normal dudes?! Oh no their actually super heroes that grew up on Pluto... John played in all the same shit clubs punk was amazing!
Because your name is Kurt Cobain. Jeeeez. ha. It's all true I don't bullshit. That is why I am telling it because it is now a fucking good true story of my life. Dig!
So if any of you were even halfway familiar with the punk scene in the northwest back then this would all sound familiar, but it is obvious you are not! But you go ahead and think this is B.S. while we all enjoy Real stories from real ppl. Thanks for Sharing John. I ran away from home to go to Seattle for the music and knew it was gonna hit big. Hearing stories from ppl who were playing in that scene before I found it is a blessing!
Wow, thanks for sharing this stuff! I was in a band (Counterpoint) around the same time as Nirvana, but we were on the East Coast. It must have been so exciting to be around that scene, especially in the beginning!!!
I had a friend named Mark Lally that was friends with Chad Channing in high school. Cobain was the first person to smoke him out. They met Kurt at a Umen show. That's such a cool story. Thanks for sharing that! If you have anymore I'd love to see em'. Thanks...
that skid row thing had me confused lol until i googled and found out that nirvana was once called skid row
If you still have a copy of that tape, please consider getting it digitized and uploading it online for the sake of sharing some Nirvana history.
Yeah I want to do that. Thanks
Done! I just finished the video and I will be uploading soon. Kurt gave me 4 tapes. I will upload all of them! Cheers
just watched the vids, nice work man!!!!!!! ^^^^

Yes. I was impressed with how cool and tall he was.
Please see if Chris can release that tape huge Kurt fan here, we need it for his legacy an history
Man the "dale demo" is also my favorite nirvana recording."If you must" is one of their best songs in my opinion, even if kurt didn't like it
the observer your very lucky of meeting Kurt and Krist because that was my biggest dream! and you seem a cool dude.
Krist is very cool, Just walk up and say hi. His band Giants in the trees may be touring some. They are really good. I dig them
Great videos brother. I just wondered what Kurt would say about the great deception and cemtrails and all of that🤔 RIP Kurt
I did not know your brother was in Soylent Green. I saw them and loved 'em!
Fascinating
Great!

beeswax and mexican seafood are the ones I forgot. Kurt recorded montage of heck on the tape after the last song which was pen cap chew.
Oh yeah that would be cool
There hasn't been an official release with all the songs together, but the songs have been bootlegged together before.
the Observer Could you try to remember the order they were on the tape ?

Leviathan Wilson-Hatfield there is some words missing in your note. Please tell me again i am interested. Thanks
that reciprocal stuff is the best. so weird and his voice crazy. incesticide has always been my fav stuff
ZEKE!!!!! They fucking rule!!! Gonna see them in April again.
The bass player now is Kurt Cofelt, I was in a band called the Load Levelers with him for 4 years. Great guy! Talk to him if you can
the Observer Yeah, I talked with him last year in Berlin. He's a good guy.
the Observer These videos are much appreciated. Thank you!
Won't see 'em again till the fourth of July
Kurt Cofelt ??!!! THE Kurt Cofelt as in Agent Steel / Holy terror ´s Kurt Cofelt ?

@@JohnPurkey1 Oh, I've been trying to find it! Please copy & paste a link for me. I'd so highly appreciated if you could do so! 😁😎🤘🤘
Zeke was/is a hell of a band !
Candy Dormizzi I recently bought their newest album “Hellbender”. Was not disappointed 🤘🏻
I remember hearing Zeke on the I believe the Punkorama 98'(?) CD. Awesome punk band.

Cool story man. I don't suppose you can remember what songs were played at the skid row show?
I don't. They only song that I seem to remember is Luv Buzz. There might be a set list written down somewhere.
the Observer ah ok, have you heard the skid row rehearsal tape that surfaced a few years ago? it's really good

Did you ever get to jam with Kurt Cobain? I know you mentioned another Kurt in the video haha
I feel like there were a lot more people named Kurt back then. I haven't met a single Kurt in my entire life.
I have the same shirt!
my brother didn't know Kurt, but when he was younger he would see Layne Staley at parties and would talk to him.
Wet Lips if I was near you, we would jam. It's a struggle trying to find young rock musicians.
Garett Stanley I agree. There aren’t many from the city where i’m from.
me too
Anybody that thinks this dude is lying is a real nerd.
I think they both roadied and went to shows with the Melvins from time to time. Kurt may have tried out for the Melvins. Ive never heard that though..
@@FiddlerSteve What does OTOH mean? Thanks.
@@joshuayettou3552 OTOH means "on the other hand"
That 'next show' you're talking about should be 3-19-88 which is at the CWT. Are you familiar with this website? www.nirvanaguide.com/1988.php
I did a short phone interview with him
He was a tripper
Who was a tripper pat?
Kurt Cobain stories yay 😁
Dude I wanna hear your drumming! Any subvert material? Great name lol
Johns band Subvert were the real deal. I saw them a bunch and they were second to none.
The Wedge I wood have peed in my mouth and pooped in my hand and threw it against the glass. Like normal
dude there is kids reading this
Thanks for sharing.
GREAT IDEA I will do a video on that also I have a story about Chris Cornell
the Observer, that would be great. Wish ya the best thanks again
*scene
Hi there and thanks for the story. What is your name btw, I couldn't find it in the bio?
Speak Like YOU EAT! John Purkey. In Heavier than heaven and i found my friends
Good times.
Can u tell me how Kurt from what I’ve heard he is funny and all and that he is shy and doesn’t talk much
I never thought Kurt was shy. He was one to talk but not one to talk shit. He could be funny but that would more often depend on who he was around. Everyone holds countless emotions depending on the circumstances.
"If You Must"
cool story bro
I know this is an old video but I’m just wondering what you think Kurt would think about our current political situation.
what shirt is that?
do you have a anything from your old band? id love to hear it :p
I am on drums. Noxious fumes 1984 ruclips.net/video/05vlvWDwCy0/видео.html
Do you have any Subvert? Great band name by the way.
You could have been the 2nd guitarist he always wanted!
GOOD MORNING FOR YOU
Do you know Jerry Cantrell?
Yeah I first partied w/ Kris and Kurt at the Witchy Poo house in Olympia. Kurt was on the couch w the girls and we were raging in the kitchen w/ Kris. I would later sit and get high w/ Kurt in a little room on Capitol Hill. I remember Noxious fumes, just the name. How about Fitz of Depression? Good band, I think we played w/ them in Seattle. --Dave Doberman
RIP Kurt Cobain, Freddie Mercury, Micheal Jackson.
Did you ever think Nirvana would get as huge as they got when you first saw them? Or did you think they were a great band that would unfortunately never make it to nothing?
I always hoped people would appreciate them as much as I did. And that happened
Zeke!!
I don´t see your name anywhere in your channel, who are you?.
John Purkey, I believe
did you happen to play or know much about metal church?...they built themselves up in aberdeen either right b4 nirvana or same time dont quite remember
Way before , Metal Church were actually a pretty decent Metal band .
yes it was, i was into ratt, motley crue, beastie boys, metal church was pretty hard for the time and my parents already had a hard enuff time allowing me to listen to ozzy...
dude, Metal Church rules the whole world. and they still releases top quality albums to this day.
Damn man, you could have been in Nirvana..
Big long now. Is it me or my attitude. Love showing people that song. They ask who the fuck was that after it's over. All the time.
It's not big long now!
I also met Kurt Jim Jim Janis john and the great jerry.but i couldnt stay with them
Why is it so hard to imagine Kurt & Krist as normal dudes?! Oh no their actually super heroes that grew up on Pluto... John played in all the same shit clubs punk was amazing!
What an awesome story to tell the grandkids.. Did you ever meet El Duce? he was one of my heroes. damn shame what happened to him eh?
The Wedge Nice heroes you have
why don't you listen to the band the mentors before you judge me!
The Wedge I did
And you're telling me his lyrics weren't profound ?
This is great, however how am i supposed to know this is true?
Because your name is Kurt Cobain. Jeeeez. ha. It's all true I don't bullshit. That is why I am telling it because it is now a fucking good true story of my life. Dig!
I agree, check your shoes on the way out for BS, fun to listen to but, hmm...
Who are you? What's your name? No name is given in this interview.
liaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrr
king buzzo tell's us your a liar cool i have ad block.
Wow, thanks for sharing this stuff! I was in a band (Counterpoint) around the same time as Nirvana, but we were on the East Coast. It must have been so exciting to be around that scene, especially in the beginning!!!
