  • I was with Kurt when he got a small royalty check. We were both broke so we went downtown and spent it. I think my time frame was off a bit. It would have been more 1989.

I'm digging these personal experiences between you and Kurt. Back in 88 $18.00 would stretch a lot further than it will today. Growing up idolizing Nirvana, AIC, and many other Seattle bands, one must pay homage to the people behind the scenes. Kurt, from every story I have heard, had a heart of gold and would take the shirt off of his back for anyone who needed it, even if he needed it more. When success hits you find friends that you never knew you had. Do you think that his big heart was his weakness/downfall? All the phonies coming around for a handout that he could see through, but didn't have the heart to say no to?

This story really highlights one of the things that got me obsessed with Nirvana in 1993 when I started reading everything about them. I expect he was so happy at getting that $18 check yet he knew it was very little. But just a few years later he will have been getting checks with 6 figures... Can you imagine what that must feel like? It would be like winning the lottery every few months, but even better because he knew he earned it and worked so hard for it. But he also was working so hard and touring all over the place, he probably couldn't have enjoyed it as much.

I did not know Kurt, but i have a feeling that he prefered to hang out with "regular" real people that weren't interested in $, but those who had a great love of music and art. Anything that wasnt like a circus, after his fame became apparent. I bet toward the end, he did not care for the contiuous drama circus he found going on in his house, but preferred a one on one with people like John, who were real and untainted. He may have felt that the other things going on around him were fake or shallow.

They are like precious moments stuck in time. Sometimes someone says something that will trigger a specific memory that you havent thought of in a long time, and it suprises you that it was remembered and not lost to time. And some memories stick with you everyday. But all seem to become clear as yesterday, and you cant help but feel a great love for each, but just a touch of sadness because those times are gone. Just as if they are children grown so fast, and have gone on to an existence of their own. Gone, but not forgotten and never will be forgotten.
I know those moments too. Larger than life and surrealistic, but you know with all of your heart, they were meant to be.
The look on your face at the end of the video, i know that feeling. I feel you.

Alasdair Morrison They seem to have had far more of a connection to Edinburgh from what I can tell. I get the impression that was to do with people they got to know there.
I tend to think he loved going to Scotland and Ireland. He thought his roots were Scottish at one point - Cockburn, I remember reading this in an interview - but it turned out the Cobains were from Co. Cork. I suspect Washington and Oregon are to the USA what Scotland is to the UK - a lot of bad weather, fairly remote with no nonsense people so he could maybe relate to that. On the flipside, Scotland still has a macho culture and he was never into that.
