Very sad news. Margaret Urlich has just passed away at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer. Rest in peace Margaret and the heavenly chorus in the sky has just got bigger and better. 🌹🌹🌹
I was lucky to see Margaret Urlich sing live in Melbourne about 1990. One of the best female vocalists I've seen. She'll be greatly missed and remembered.
I first visited New Zealand back in 1988- my brother had lived there for five years in the late 70's- early 80's and I was taken to some boozer (The Gluepot?) by a woman I'd met in Auckland to see this group. They mostly did covers as I remember but were really high energy, got pissed had a great time- end of story.
Forgot just how good these girls were.....sublime. Great nights at the Gluepot. Them, Holiday Makers, Blam etc etc. Awesome times. Not forgettin' THE DUDES at the Windsor. Brilliant kiwi music.
Thought of this today while melting in the Gold Coast working . Reminds me of skipping in slow motion with a kete full of illegal tuatua down Kohimarama beach one summer .
This song was the earliest music video I remember watching, must have been about 8 years old when it came out. I always used to think they needed a great big 'Mountain Top' haha.
The songs in that period so much better than the modern music today it was great to sing along with them and feeling like dancing with them .rip Margaret .
Worked at the 1990 Commonwealth Games Auckland, was invited back to the Piss up at the end of the closing Ceremony, having beers with the athletes etc, No one knew it but all of a sudden "Cats Away" appeared on stage and blew everyone away,
I remember this song as a 4 year old. 1999-2000 in Nelson NZ being picked up by mum in the old E series falcon. Front seat without a carseat of course. Radio was on and this had to be one of the songs that played. I hate my parents for making me but their music taste definitely imprinted on me
OMG i miss being a lil kiddie this reminds me of all my auntys and my mum back in the days. Before cell phones and theyd talk about going to clubs like the Glue Pot
@drag0nfly_girl - glad someone pointed that out. In high school social studies back in ‘96, our SJW teacher played this _endlessly_ (‘diaspora studies’, or whatever). 13-year old me couldn’t quite put his finger on why this ostensibly jolly and upbeat (if, frankly, somewhat humdrum, in my opinion) pop song had these weirdly sinister undercurrents that nobody else seemed to be picking up on. Like, the message was so, _so_ contradictory - if all these ‘colours’ are so great, why mix them? SJW teacher explained to us that ‘coffee coloured people’ could be anything from white (i.e., flat white), to black (i.e., black coffee), and that would be the ‘range’ of people after ‘stirring for a hundred years or more’. But if the ingredients are _already_ diverse (i.e., ‘coffee coloured’ - ‘White man’, ‘blue blood’, ‘Black man’, Red Indian’, ‘Latin kinkies’ and ‘Chinese chinkies’*), how and why would they be _more_ ‘coffee coloured’ after ‘stirring for a hundred years’? More likely they’d be _one_ tone, right? Wish I’d had the intellect as well as the nads to ask these questions of her . . . But I didn’t question it and I simply assumed I was alone in that vague sense of unease that this song engendered in me, and thus my feeling must have been _wrong._ *that line didn’t age well . . . _kinda like the girls in the actual music video!_
My favourite Kiwi video love it.... Its a shame the quality is poor I am sure there was a better quality one a few years back which I cant seem to find
Rudyard Kipling The Stranger The Stranger within my gate, He may be true or kind, But he does not talk my talk-- I cannot feel his mind. I see the face and the eyes and the mouth, But not the soul behind. The men of my own stock, They may do ill or well, But they tell the lies I am wanted to, They are used to the lies I tell; And we do not need interpreters When we go to buy or sell.
they wre all hot, specially annie got talkin to at stanleys niteclub on queen st when i just come out from england, lovely girl found out later she was preety well known over here , lovely girl.
The Stranger within my gates, He may be evil or good, But I cannot tell what powers control-- What reasons sway his mood; Nor when the Gods of his far-off land Shall repossess his blood. The men of my own stock, Bitter bad they may be, But, at least, they hear the things I hear, And see the things I see; And whatever I think of them and their likes They think of the likes of me.
This was my father's belief And this is also mine: Let the corn be all one sheaf-- And the grapes be all one vine, Ere our children's teeth are set on edge By bitter bread and wine.

Did you get your cataracts fixed at any time in the ten years since you made that comment, bro?
Holy sit, grew up listening to this song. Had no idea it was Kiwi!
+LilaRose89 this is actually a cover of a Blue Mink song, from 1970
+Adrianne Gentleman This is the version I grew up listening to, I assumed it was another non-Kiwi group
I actually think it's better than the original version.
Me too! What a beautiful bunch of women. Awesome video. Looks like it was so much fun to shoot this video.

The World needs a wake up

What reasons sway his mood;
Nor when the Gods of his far-off land
Shall repossess his blood.

So initially there were 5 and I was right!
