Thanks so much for this video and experimentation with the Avata. Since this drone has many good qualities I am really interested in understanding what causes this poor flight behavior that causes it to crash. I can’t wait for the next video
OMG.. I was waiting for content like this for weeks now. you opend pandoras box.... 3, 2, 1... here comes content creators give a spin off your content.
Glad you mentioned the battery. I suspect the battery being top center and heavy does not allow the drones ESC to compensate and recover motor power for those turns. This could be managed through an update but would probably reduce the speed when that happens. Either way I love the drone and have a blast flying it every day. Thanks for yor testing on this.
Thanks : This test was the third step I do when reviewing almost cinewhoops. First we test : Stock setup. Second ; New propellers. Third : No prop guards. It’s always fun to see what results we get. Each cinewhoop frame, FC and power combo is different.
Great video thanks for reading our minds and letting us all see what we were wondering. I also wonder how it would fly if you modded the battery to a LiPo with a decent discharge rate. Not being able to "tune" tune the extra power boost would be annoying but the software may adjust on it's on. Or it may not liftoff . Or catch on fire. We want to see Justin!
@@dronecampsyes of course for the science! 😂 I've been building packs since the RC10 NiCad days I'd love to open the Avata pack and swap in some real horsepower. But I have no experience with dji or the battery management software and their checks. Probably just a bunch of high quality 18650s in there to be honest. I'm running a custom 2200mAh 5S pack in my emax hawk pro and I can thrash it for 11-12 mins with my motor capped at 80% so someone will make the Avata a laser beam one day
I did see one mod with a LiPo. There are 3-4 wires on the connector. Positive negative and signal for smart telemetry I believe. I bet their software would detect a third party battery. But the tester in me wants to snip that connector off and experiment.
@@dronecamps go for it man, honestly I wouldn't really be interested if someone else did it anyway lol I try to not watch too much FVP RUclips, but your TinyHawk was the final video that made me pull the FPV trigger and buy my first setup. So I only make time for like you, bardwell, and motherfuckin botgrinder 🤖 Oh and Dr Quads too, found him recently and I like what he has to say
You’re welcome. More testing without the guards. Some missed the pint of this testing. Stability is improved during maneuvers. I’ve done this before with other cinewhoops after flying terrible with prop guards. Always helps with performance.
Drill some quarter inch holes every half inch around the prop guards. Hell they are cheap enough to replace. It will lighten it up and allow for little better air flow.
Or just design a carbon fiber frame to stick the components from the avata on while your at it do the DJI fpv too. I bet custom carbon fiber frames for the DJI components would fly off the shelf. Ha Ha
Me too. I was generally curious to see how it would fly without the flight controllers really like it when we remove the guards. Years of testing these ; I expected good results. Also I mention it’s tuned with the guards. Not recommended to fly without yours. Just for aerobatic testing.
Thanks for the info,.. you were certainly ripping that thing around, waiting til the hype chills down, maybe by then DJI will have a two for one special on the Avata.
This pretty much proves people are just getting wash out of some sort in their 180 degree turns. Not really an acrobatic drone anyway since it is a cinewoop.
Yes it's not an aerobatic drone. However unlocking Manual Mode for pilots allows it to access aerobatic maneuvers. For research we wanted to test the limits. Moore No guard flights and testing to come.
I’d like to find out. More testing to follow with this little quad. Pid tuning can help. But specific to the no prop guard setup. Then different rates to prop guards on. Depends on how guys want to fly this little machine.
AM I wrong ⁉️but it seems to me like we are using the Avata incorrectly… is it made to do flips and dives or is it more for a flying low cinematic flying style. I would thing if someone wants to flip , dive and freestyle racing… get a 5 inch racing freestyle FPV drone….. I wouldn’t bring my Kia to the racetrack 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️.
We know this. Tested for research purposes : Mainly because yes people are using Avata in manual mode to flip, roll, and dive. People are having issues with tumble and crash in all modes. The point of this video is to test the FC to get data on the tumble effect with guards and without. People will always push the limits. Hell look at a Honda Civic. 🤣🤣🤣 We know what Avata is made for. ☝🏻🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
The million dollar question is, should there even be a fix fir this. Given its a whoop and NOT a fpv racer. Seems quite a bit of the issue here is flying a mini van, expecting it to handle like a lotus.
hi thanks for both your video about avata and tumbling. you were absolutely clear about the reason why tumbles happen (props guard low power and weight distribution), but do you think that dji could fix (or at leat limit)this behaviour with some firmware upgrade?
This prop guard does seem to be way over-(badly)engineered. I can see alot of room for weight reduction whilst still doing its job (seems like a good opportunity for after market products made of carbon fiber and plastic designs with less material assuming it is possible without the need of re-tuning the ESCs and flight computer)
dji repair verdict: the pilot pushed the Roll stick to the right, pushed the Yaw stick right, the aircraft turned to the right direction in 14m/s horizontal speed which caused unstable attitude, then the aircraft crashed with obstacles. Flight conclusion:The incident was caused by misoperation. Therefore, it is concluded to customer responsibility.
You soooooo read my mind!.... But I guess this is for those who simply do not care about the cost factor or couldn't be bothered to question what they are being sold.
Or if you just want to fly slow. This quad really is the most precise quad I’ve ever flown. That’s the huge point of it. And I love it for that. But flipping or yaw flipping it is asking Dji for a repair. 🤣🤣🤣☝🏻 They should reconsider Manual Mode. ☑️🥸🥸🥸
Not really, you need to remember your have to include a GoPro in your cost. The Avata costs $640 with a battery, so approx $500 for the drone... A GoPro Hero 11 runs $500 or an Action 2 or 3 runs about $300. There's no way you're building a GPS capable, long range, 15-20 minute, vertical hold, 1/2" fpv camera, 1080p live feed, etc cinewhoop for $0-200... Hahaha!
it is tuned with the guards. non fpv people might not understand this and remove the guards anyway lol. say goodbye to yer esc, hopefully not while you're flying above a crowd

loving these "testing" videos - keep up the good work!! DJI is listening and watching you
I drilled small holes all of the way around my prop guards and I guess it works. No tumbling for me. 🤙🏿
Interesting concept! Thank you for sharing !
Wait, can you share the idea on facebook or youtube somehow?thanks
Did you fill them vertically or horizontally and what parts
Love the content and teaching everyone something! I hope new thinner propguards are to come! Thanks for sacrificing your drone for our purposes.
Now someone needs to make some accessoires to hold the antennas save while flying without prop guards. Nice test, thanks 👍🏻
This is awesome! Digging your content on DJI Avata. You are somehow pushing it to its limit and I like it. As a cinewhoop fpv, it's remarkable!
For what it is. I still like it. Especially like modding it. I do like this funny animal
Very interesting. Just seeing it without the prop guards, tiny motors and huge battery says it all really..... No wonder their having issues.
It’s a huge battery. And CG is ultra weird. I also think the quad could use 3” props and a larger wheelbase. It would fly better and more stable.
@@dronecamps Agreed. Too small, too underpowered, too heavy.
Very!
You are doing actually dji has to do bro. Good job. Now pls design new prop guards for avata and sell it to dji😁

You’re welcome. More testing without the guards. Some missed the pint of this testing. Stability is improved during maneuvers.

Does it fly okay without the sensor plugged in underneath?
Always innovative, you!
So where did you put the antennas?
On the sides. Left and right on the frame.
I see you do a lot of hard right yaw turns. Did you also test with hard left turns?
Yes. Crazy freestyle video 2 tomorrow!
Those prop guards are shaped like funnels that's why I did mention somewhere else that I think they're the problem and the 2 naturally

Did both.
What happens if you disconnect the bottom sensor cable and fly it like that?
