Split screen was always a selling point, there's tons of multiplayer games for PS2/XB with no split screen, I can certainly remember digging through bargain bins looking for something cool and with local multiplayer back in the day
Not free, but the base game is only $30, with the special edition that comes with the season pass only $40. And they are underpricing this game in general imo, so there's no reason not to get it all, unless that $10 will really strap you.

it reminds me of "war of the monster" on ps2 but with mechs, the city likks tiny and you can feel the weight of the mechs, it's well done just by seeing this vid
