- Learn how to make heavily-scented potpourri that lasts a while! And, this fall-themed potpourri is absolutely beautiful. Potpourri is used to scent a room but it can also be used as a decorative element. If you don’t have anything to scent, you can purchase cheap bags of potpourri and make it your own. You can also forage things from right outside to use, too; like pine cones, round seeds, and other “woodsy” items. I’m going for a rustic, fall vibe so I’ll be using dried fruit & flowers as well. If you plan on using dried items, you’ll need to dry out items prior to making potpourri. Use a dehydrator or your oven (temperatures & times depend on your oven/dehydrator). For flowers, you can simply hang them upside down for a few weeks. There are different ways to make potpourri; 1 basic rule is after applying the oil (in which ever method you choose), rub it in so that it evenly coats the item. A fixative absorbs & retains the fragrance; effectively reducing the evaporation rate of the scents. Some fixatives you may use are orris root powder, oak moss, cellulose, ground gum benzoin, or fiberfix. You can implement orris root powder in a few different ways: scent the orris root powder & let it cure to soak up the fragrance in a sealed container for 1 week. Coat items with orris root & scent them, then cure items in a sealed container for 1 week. I applied the orris root powder to any item that has cracks or crevices where it can get in. Then sprayed fragrance oil on top the powder. For flowers or petals, be gentle & go light on the fragrance. Go light on the fragrance for dried fruit, too. ** Do not leave any item soaking wet or on the wet surface you’ve been working on. Once everything is scented, let the potpourri cure in a sealed container for about 12 hours to soak in the oil. After, it will be dry to the touch & heavily-scented. ** Do not assemble potpourri if it is still wet. ***NOTE: Some sites recommend sealing prepared potpourri in an airtight container for one month before use. This is your choice. I did not do this. Assemble the potpourri however you want. You can dump some in a container & see what happens or you can put potpourri together like a puzzle & basically just put things where they fit best (snuggle items close to get more in the bowl). For best results, use a shallow bowl so the potpourri can breathe. Don’t put it in a plastic container; it will ruin the plastic container. Put the potpourri anywhere to brighten up a room & add a lovely scent. Keep in mind, the potpourri works better in smaller areas, like a bathroom. The scent of potpourri will last anywhere from 2 months to a year. Just know that the scent throw/strength will diminish over time. Use the spray to revive it! Keep it out of direct sunlight and breezes, it will last longer.

Could you make a video on how to make your own elements/ ingredients for making a potpourri
The only items I made were the fruit & flowers. But yes, sure I can!
That is so gorgeous!!! I want to try this so bad, but I have a curious toddler who would probably throw them around, and a 7 month old who would eat them if he got ahold of them.
I can dream though!
lol yea, you don't want the kiddos getting in it fa sho! Even though it smells good enough to eat!
LOL the pokey seed things are from sweet gum trees. we have them here in tx too. LOL. glad to find a use for those pesky things.
Pesky is right! Ever walk on then bare foot! 🤬
@@CreativeBathLab LOL yes and arghhhh!
This is so gorgeous❤ does it have good fragrance throw? Or is it more when your sitting near it?
I want to make a fall appropriate potpourri for Halloween themed glass containers which have a glass top. These containers are of a medium size and was wondering what essential oils that you might recommend and what items that you might recommend putting in the bowl to give it a deeply scented scent.
Is it ok to add a preservative to the oil so prevent molding?
What if I use a fragrance oil solution that has preservatives? Will that decrease the chances of molding/spoilage?
"how to make potpourri "
"go to your local dollar store and buy it"
wow greeat! thank you!

What if the dried elements swell up in oil, will they catch fungus or something getting gushy

From the bottle!
Could DPG be used to cut the fragrance oil?
Where did you purchase the dried fruit please
Hey there! I dehydrated my own, however, I linked some dried fruit at the bottom for you!
What is the powder you mentioned. And we're can I buy it? Very nice video
Should be linked in description
How long does the Potpourri last without it being refreshened?
Like a month. Mine is still going strong!! But this is a preference thing. You may want to refresh it more often
Can this be placed on stovetop or only in dry containers?
So glad to have you Debra!
What do you do to cure it? Any special lights or anything?
Nope! Just set it in a bin & put something on top
