- From the history of Potpourri to the gathering of ingredients such as herbs, rose hips and flower petals, we'll be creating a beautiful mixture of fragrant potpourris.

1 cup Chamomile
1 Tbsp Rosehips
2 Tbsp. rosemary
1 Tbsp Allspice/2 Tbsp Orris root powder
6 drops lavender
2 drops Vanilla
Good sources for your ingredients: Bulk Apothecary, Hobby Lobby and Wallmart carry Essential Oils and glass containers, Amazon and online shops carry your spices and some dried herbs.

Spicy potpourri, yes! I once saved the petals from a dozen yellow roses, from a florist. They had no odor but the color was sublime. After air drying them I put them in a sealed jar and promptly forgot them. A year or so later I opened the jar and a strong rose scent rose up( no pun intended). I am still amazed that there was scent in the petals! Has anyone else experienced this? Next time I am gifted florist roses I will try this again.
That's good to know, and it is very likely what the Egyptians did, simply adding the petals to an urn and sealing it.

Oh, yes! Please do another potpourri video. I just adore the little tap, tap, tap of your spoons on the container as you finish. It's so soothing. Your dried flowers are lovely and I covet your jar collection. I highly recommend The San Francisco Herb Company for both large and small herbs and spices. Their prices are reasonable and their products are wonderful.

A friend once sent me yarrow in a cardboard box during hot weather. When I opened the box, the scent transported me to a hay meadow in my memory. Such a gift!

First time I ever remember learning anything about potpourri was 1979 when I went into a drugstore and they were selling Claire Burke potpourri. It was an old fashioned rose fragrance (not their "Original" but one they discontinued many years back and I cannot remember the name of it or even find any history of it) which reminded me of my grandmothers, who were both gardeners who loved growing flowers. Later I became obsessed with the idea of collecting rose petals to make my own potpourri for my home, which I did in the early 1980s. Lots of fun! You make it look like such fun still. I've been saving some petals. Maybe now is the time to try it again!! Thank you for the inspiration and the beautiful video! ...Oh, and I too haven't succeeded in growing mignonette yet, but I am going to try again.
Potpourri did have a resurgence in the 70's and 80's, and essential oils became popular in the last 20 years.

As a student of William Morris’ history and fabrics- I noticed the honeysuckle pattern reference in your scattered two-toned honeysuckle flowers on a board. And I also noticed how much the last batch resembled the layers of pattern in a Morris fabric. Well done! I wanted to get out my watercolors and create a giant composition of that beauty. Thank you.

I love your videos so much, they're so calming and peaceful. My parents just got back from their vacation and while they were gone, they went to a lavender farm. They brought me back some wonderful lavender tea, goat milk lotion, muscle jelly (chronic pain..oof) and a small sachet of lavender potpourri that I now keep above my bed.
Edit: With Christmas now close at hand, I'm super excited to get some cinnamon scented pinecones to have on my desk. I love earthy, warm, cozy forest-y scents. My favourite scent by far is the after rain smell.

The little yellow dahlia came out of a seed packet from Outside Pride, but the blooms look nothing like the ones on the seed packet. They were supposed to be pom poms...on of them were.
I’ve added pansies to mine sometimes as well as purple mallow. Yours look beautiful and bet they smell heavenly. 😊

Such a wonderful video Jeri, your potpourri looks beautiful and I’m sure it smells amazing too! I made some last year when I had an abundance of roses and also used the little buds as well. I also dried some blue petals although I can’t remember the name of the flower but they dried the prettiest blue and really stood out against all the reds and pinks. It really is so fun. Looking forward to the next video!

Lovely! I should try this soon. I have my shed full of dried lambs ears and roses hanging upside down. I saved all my poppy seed heads as well. Those poppies you sent me have really brought a lot of joy in my garden! Thank you again for that! I've got a pot of pourri simmering on the back of the stove at the moment. It's got apple, orange, nutmeg, cinnamon and several other things I popped in the pot. It's got the whole house smelling wonderful! I wonder if pine needles would also work in my simmer pot?

I love this video so much. So gorgeous. I'm sure you love drying all natural but if your looking to keep the shape and colors get yourself some silica gel beads trust me when I say they look just like fresh flowers when dry.

Yes, Dry the hips. If there is any moist material in the mix when you store it, mold will develop.

Can I use any kinda of flowers for potpourri?
Yes and no. Dry the ones with fragrance and those that keep some good color. Try to avoid the petals that will just turn brown. You'll want to experiment with different flowers.

Jeri , I’m wanting to do as you recommended with my still itty bitty foxglove starts in 4 “ pots . ( the seedlings are the size of lg pin heads . ) and leave them outdoors all winter . My question is … how do I protect them from snow and ice covering them , when they’re soooo tiny and I don’t have a greenhouse? I love your nursery bed outside , and I have something like this that I can leave the pots down in . However , they will be buried in snow before long . What should I do? I don’t want to lose them . I’ve been trying so hard to grow foxglove.
I understand your worries about the tiny babies. try this: put some clear plastic cups over the top of each plant, pop an air hole in the top so the plant doesn't suffocate. When the weather is warm, remove the cups on those days. I have some 4-5" foxglove that thrived the other night at below freezing while nearly everything else in the garden died overnight. They weren't covered at all. Let me know how the foxys are doing as the time passes.

It isn't meant to be strictly a tutorial: it's about history, beauty and materials used in creating scent. If you follow along the last 1/4 of the video, I don't know why it would be difficult to make the potpourri according to my instructions.
