I simply marvel at Tom Mankiewicz's contribution to this film with his writing. Jor-el's first words, "This is no fantasy. No careless product of wild imagination." He is not just speaking to the Council. He is also speaking to us, the audience. He is telling us that this is not a comic book. This is real. You will believe a man can fly...

This is the greatest way a superhero movie could ever begin. I don't know how else to say it. This was absolute genius, from the direction, the script, the acting, the effects...just incredible.
There will never be another Superman as great as the 1978 movie.

To the younger generation viewing this clip for the first time, focus on 4:00 to 4:10 ... now, imagine sitting in a very, very large movie theatre viewing this for the first time, with a giant screen and massive speakers at full volume, the way movie theatres used to be back in the day because they weren't busy like today running 15 movies at the same time (half of them the same movies, but in 3-D BS), cutting viewing space. And you're hearing General Zod/Terrence Stamp's voice and the expressions on his face courtesy of the extreme close-up -- swearing vengeance against Jor-El and his heirs. THAT is movie magic.

This opening scene was simply incredible. It set up the mood that carried 1 and 2 so perfectly.
The combination of Amazing designs, brilliant editing and acting, great lines, and creative suggestions that allowed space for us to indulge in our ponder and imaginations .... have kept us captivated all these years.
Oh how we yearn that people behind Superman remakes can take advantage of technological advances to produce better visual flair without failing to replicate what made Superman so magical.
But after so many substandard remakes that have effectively damaged our child-like expectations, it has become too difficult and heartbreaking to maintain hope.

5 minutes in an all black room with two silver hula hoops and you have an amazing, deeply personal setup for a Zod vs Superman showdown... in Man of Steel, they took something around 20 minutes jam packed with more cgi than you could shake a fist at and they don't even come close to matching the intensity/brilliance of this scene.

Man of Steel was good. Zod was more fleshed out with a backstory that wasn't explored (much) in this movie. Still I firmly believe the way Terence Stamp embodied Zod is on par with Reeve's being living embodiment Superman. Both are really the characters ( in the DCU) and their respective acting quality will never be duplicated.

I'm sorry. Man of steel's zod is a modern day joke compared to this scene from over 30 years ago. Enjoy CGI new age kids. Comparing this Zod trial to the Man of Steel Zod trial is an interesting exercise in how the movie industry has changed over the years. The old Zod trial had better and more adult dialogue, better acting, better music, more subtle foreshadowing, and cheesy special effects. The new Zod trial has fancy CG special effects, worse music, juvenile and simple-minded dialogue, worse acting, and excessive in-your-face foreshadowing. Perhaps the modern movie industry has given up on adults and now they are specifically targeting juveniles.

Lets be fair I have a different idea about superman 80's and the new one each generation interprets the stories in their own way. I loved superman especially when Ke-al is sent to earth the heartbreak and hope in his parents eyes as they watched their baby leave, very few movies have that kind of ummmp then or now. The new Superman man movie was very different for example (old White/ new GREY) a they made the culture of Kyrpton so eugenic and well grey, it missed the nuances of the Kyrptoniasns as a culture of reason, science and rare MORALS most science based culture have ethics.
But lets face it I grew-up with Superman so it's not like i'm ever going to look at the new superman and go YAH THIS is BETTER THAN SUPERMAN of the 80's, not just emotionally the 80's superman was unique as a hero he loved, he hurt, and he was scared and dealt with mortality. But that is superman of the comic book which went into the movie screen play.
I liked the new Superman in spite of my reservations about the way it was rewritten one thing it did very well was give Ja-el a voice to explain why he sent Kael to earth to be an ambassador between worlds, Zod was a much more well rounded character to he had an actual purpose to rebuild his society albeit at earths expense, here I have to give total credit to the better version of the conflict between Zod and Kael.
Zod was trying to recreate a home and society and was furious with Kael for not standing for Kyrpton with him, it was a heart wrenching scene when Ka-el snaps Zods neck because he was going to kill earth people to punish Kael for destroying the terra forming ship.
That moment when Ka-el begs Zod to stop lasering with his eyes and then Zod refuses for me was just the best part of the movie. As my husband says everything has it's do's and don't the new superman was pretty good, it not my favorite but I though it was well done.
Lets stay a way from the old cliche"Well in my day the music/movie/news.... was soo much better."
I like them both but for very different reasons.

. That's debatable. But you HAVE to agree that the dialogue in Man of Steel was horrendous.

The concept of breeding babies in giant tubes was popularized in the novel "Brave New World"(1932), which was also turned into a movie, with a Leonard Nemoy cameo, and the technology had the same function of giving pre-determined birth. Plus the concept is a type of cloning, via taking the eggs from different donors and recycling the genetic material over and over again.

Terrence Stamp was a fantastic Zod. The way he conveyed the lines was demanding and chilling, especially the "YOU WILL BOW BEFORE ME!". One of many reasons why Superman 2 is still my favorite Superman film
Michael Shannon also did a fantastic job. They tried to make us more sympathetic towards Zod and Shannon helped convey that.
I personally liked Man of Steel. But the people who claim the first 2 films look "stupid" REALLY don't know what they're missing. They're still better than MoS

You do realize that Superman I is the first successful superhero movie that paved way for the genre? It may look comic-ish at times, but thats where it came from, the COMICS. Still it and Superman II held its own as the best Superhero movies for decades.

Thank you for posting. Pivotal film for eighties. Interesting that a red dwarf star is passed in the first seconds. It is identical to the appearance of Nibiru as it appears in multiple current photos over the past eight months. The solar system with it is now brightly visible as a gold star in the northwest sky between nine and eleven every night. The events hinted and warned of in the films of the seventies though to the nineties, are coming to pass.

i think the lack of thorough character development suited the film. clark's struggle to find a place to fit in is one that we can relate to but never truly understand, and has haunted him for his entire life. i think the film nailed the essence of clark's internal conflicts and concluded with the possibility that maybe clark has discovered his own niche within the world.
the destruction was over the top, but it wouldn't make sense any other way. battling super gods can't help but wreak havoc.

Which is why he only says it in one scene while Superman 2's Zod likes to remind EVERYONE in the audience what he's going to make Superman and humanity do.
"What's Zod going to do when he defeats Superman?"
    You will bow/kneel before Zod!
"Oh that's what he's going to do.... what's he going to do again?"
    Bow/Kneel before Zod!
    "Oh right.... what again?"
    Bow/Kneel!
    "okay, got it!"

Who cares if it ruined the original story? It is the Superman story of the next generation. Man of Steel wasn't made to please comic book readers or fans of the original. It was made for the next generation of people who will want to see the Superman story on the big screen.

I wondered the same thing for a long time. The only thing I could ever conclude is that the hoops, once around someone being on trial for criminal acts, it acts as something that makes them powerless. An equivalent to how being tied up would keep you from going anywhere, for example.

This version is the opening scene and set-up for Krypton. At the beginning of Superman 2, we see the act that led directly to their trial and then a Cliff Notes version of this scene which leads directly into the opening credits sequence.
