  • This is a complex topic. I learned a ton through exploring the question of gentrification and remote work in Medellin Colombia. As the digital nomad landscape grows and travel becomes more and more popular this topic will become more relevant. Thank you for watching and sharing your opinion on gentrification in Colombia.

One of the issue with foreigners to help the issue is don't overpay for housing. Pay what the locals pay. At some point Latin America will start restricting property rights to citizens only. That might be the only way to fix the problem. This is what they do in Asia.

This is a never ending argument with the locals. Some are more radicals than others and of course hits hard when foreginers came here and literally steal the housing oportunities.
There are always winners and losers when these phenomenons strike without warning so I only see two posible solutions: Demanding new house developing plans to the City Hall or creating more strict policies for migration. People tend to see the landlords as greedy monsters but we need to consider they need to pay Administracion (when we speak about private condos), property taxes (which increase every year) and most of cases mortgages (considering the high rates nowadays) and I know there abusive overcharges but come on someone really pretend that landlords keeps ok just earning the 10% after montly expenses that impliy holding a property?
It is a complex scenario, Landlords are also mid class people who worked hard to achieve a property but of course many people has the mentality "if I cant get nothing from you then you are a selfish monster"

Is not the same. We go there to work and live in US dollars. The gringos are just taking advantage of the usd valuation compared to cop. Is not fair. Is they come here to Colombia and work in pesos and pay taxes I don’t see any problem. But what they are doing is just taking advantage of poor people. That increase drug trafficking and prostitution also.

Serious question: Do you *actually* believe average people in the US are making ~$7k/month?
Was that a joke, or have you not been to the US in a really long time, and just saw that statistic somewhere online?
    Just asking.

    • @BookItTravel
      @BookItTravel  Год назад

You are correct the figure is on the higher end. It was taken from BLAS, but is based on being educated and in prime working years. The gap might be slightly less if other factors are taken into account. I live in the US so not just statistic I have no idea about. I realize people have a hard time in the US also. Thanks for the comment and correction. Always appreciated.

The laws of supply and demand will cause higher prices for way more people than there will be local beneficiaries. The impact of rich migrants buying real estate is very different from the impact of tourists. The damage on culture and society might be even worse on the long run.

I see the diversity of peoples becoming a global phenomenon. Quite literally, everywhere. I have friends around the world and have traveled a few places, and tbh I feel this is an inevitable reality of the human condition. Foreigners of all kinds are going to any country that will hire them so they can provide for their families.
Countries and governments, as well as cheap labor farms and factories actually benefit from this and love this.
However I see your point regarding tourism causing gentrification. We've seen it in a plethora of counties in America... some cities that had explosions like San Fran were gentrified all in ONE LIFETIME.
I do like your approach of meeting in the middle though. The extra income the governments make can go back into the locals so it's a win-win situation. But obviously this is too much of a complex issue for me to "solve" in a comments section lol.
    Peace be with you.

Native Americans were just finally feeling some adjustment and relief from all them. Now we gotta take them back ,they have nowhere else to go.This is a terrible problem.
I remember when Natives had to fight very hard to surveyors they came on the land so they can lay the FIBER OPTICS. It was awful.More research ,more demographics, more colonizing, a way of money.

Thanks for the informative video. I don't normally comment but I can't help sympathise with the people of Medellin. I recently began travelling after pandemic starting in Hoi An. I went to this local restaurant. I am not a dog person but this Australian women came in, handed the owner a wod of cash which amounted to about 1 pound English money and asked him to watch her pugs while she uses the restroom. Meanwhile, my food had arrived but am waiting for her to remove her dogs. I asked him you have a no dog sign up but then she emerged and started to tell her epic success story blappering about how terrible covid impacted local businesses and how she now owns many homestays and managed to buy up tailoring shops employing locals to work there, 'giving back'! For years Vietnam was a safe haven for digital normals, Westerners have benefited enormously living a life far richer than their country of origin, can live and act like royaltiy with very privileged life. I don't agree with your business model. Simply generating cheap labour for a company, growth of your product and company values under the disguise of giving. More careful analysis is needed how foreigners impact are influence and change the culture. Bringing foreign ideas will further destroy a local culture and their way of life. They don't need higher standards of living, their means of substance should not be interfered. How about foreigners pay a small tax to that subsidises farmers or give a share their earnings which pays to create food banks etc. Driving up cost of boots in texas will not drive locals further into poverty or into the hands of local gangs or even be murdered. The future you describe is accurate. Westerners need education about their footprint of damage and how to prevent it becoming a cest pit like other places around the world. The problem is the government is corrupt, want foreigner money to rebuilt and the kick everyone out after and take control. Rather than people turning up capitalising on everything they see making the most money for the minimum effort and then winning hearts and minds for approval to gain support to push more goods and services, we need to be kind and selflessly understanding.

🤔...Once again, the fact that such question is even asked, that is...the question being "raised"...is not so much an issue of "gentrification"...who complains about new revenue, or increased profit margins coming from outside the "internal economy"...??? Only someone who is more afraid about "losing" something larger in the long term, in Latin America's case and the USA, that is obviously the loss of territory, freedom, sovereignty, natural resources, and/or regional peace and stability...based on previous experiences, historical facts...
so, once again...the biggest challenge for the US (should they wished to actually establish a long term mutually beneficial economic relationship with American countries south of their border) will be avoiding making the same mistakes of the past, while at the same time making amends to the mistakes of the past...now, in the eyes of the US "they have made no mistakes" 🙄🤦 So "what is there to amend"...? And THAT is the main issue with my dear Gringos...so good at so many things but completely oblivious to the different perspectives of others, not only in America itself 🌎(America...the "America" the US belongs to, just like all other American countries) but also around the world...which btw, it seems the "Monroe Doctrine" now also applies to the World itself..."only" the US has the "right" to benefit from other countries, Europe for example...cannot buy its own energy from who ever they want, it must be from the USA...which, sooner than later will also have major blowback repercussions in the relationship between the EU and USA..."what is there to amend"...? They will ask again! 🤦

ok, .... there is about a 30% of total disinformation in this video, .... however there is about at least 60% of good information, ....
you can not compare the monthly salary of the United states of America with the monthly salary of Colombia and or Medellin ..
here is an example the monthly salary in New York city ,... is between $4,000 to $6,000 usa dollars , .... however
here are your monthly expenses in Manhattan New York City Monthly rent is $3,5000 usa dollars ... Food is about $700 usa dollars, .. transportation is about $ 500 usa dollars . As you can see , .. your total bill for the month so far is about $ 4,700 usa dollars not counting entertainment, not counting clothing etc...
Based on these numbers New Yorkers are actually living at a poverty level with this salary as stated above, ... ..
Remember with $ 1,000 usa dollars per month in Medellin Metropolis you will have a life of luxury , .. in Medellin you can rent a luxury apartment in Poblado, you can use transportation taken a normal taxi and you can eat at expensive restaurants and have left over money for personal entertainment ... basically with $ 1,000, USA Dollars per month you will have a life of high class weath in Medellin Metropolis... compared to $ 4,000 USA Dollars in New York City you will have a life of lower middle class border line poor conditions in New YorkCity.
With respect to crime and danger way of life, ... and insecurity, ... ... you obviously do not know what is happening in the USA today, specifically in Dallas, Florida, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles Baltimore, Detroit, ..Washington DC, etc, ..etc, ..
You perdsonally have been back to the USA today , ... here are the crime facts about the USA statistics today July, 2023...
Today over 100 Americans are violently murdered in the USA by people with guns, on a daily basis, .. that is over over 2,500 people in the USA are violently killed by gun man on a monthly basis that equates to over 120,000 Americans are violently murdered by gunman on a yearly basis in the USA, my source of information is CNN, Fox, ABC, NBC, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall street journal, Google ...
Let's talk about the real problems that expats and digital nomads from Europe and The USA are facing in Medellin and or Colombia in general, ... ... Expats and digital nomads only travel to Medellin to get drunk, ..to get drugs, ..and for prostitution, these are the reasons 60% of expats and digital nomads travel to Medellin Metropolis for, ...
The latest news is that these expats and digital nomads come to Colombia is to have sex with children , ... these are the sad news about expats and digital nomads, ... these are the real reasons that Colombians in general are unhappy about expats and digital nomads, ...

Yet another overtly negative view of foreigners in Colombia. Just like with housing in the US, there needs to be more higher density builds with mixed zoning, better infrastructure planning, improving government, etc. Point is, it's not the foreigners per se are the problem.
