I struggled growing cucumber in my NW facing garden but they grow at the allotment. Experience tells me they need the sunniest position possible. My friend swears by Sokratese cucumber in the greenhouse and it's done well for me the last couple of years. Was pleased about that as have struggled growing cucumber in there. Try Marketmore 76 cucumbers outside. They are not as pretty as the ones you just started, but taste good. La Diva should grow outside as well. On a previous allotment that waterlogged as soon as it went cloudy, I used to form mounds of compost to grow them on the top of. Raised beds shouldn't have that problem, I know, but might be worth experimenting with.
    Happy sowing and growing

A great selection of vegetable seeds for sowing in May Steve and a awesome video. I will be sowing a few courgette seeds outside (all the varieties I have are indoor & outdoor varieties). My cucumber plant leaves and stem got eaten by some pest so I will be sowing cucumber seeds to replace the cucumber plant. Yay! My new alottment is confusing me. I planted spuds and nasturtiums up there. Now weather forecast only said night temps were down to 3 Celsius in my city, yet the spud shoots and nasturtiums look as if they've been frosted! The ones in my own garden at a lower elevation with more shelter are fine. Does anybody else get this? So strange to experience frost damage when no frosts were forecast. Does clay soil create cold micro climates? So weird.

    • @GreenSideUp

@@GreenSideUp Thanks for the response. Yes, it does seem localised and has me stumped. Not sure how to deal with the situation. It's a flattish plot S-N oriented, though fairly open on a sloping allotment site. I can't figure out what would create a frost pocket as the air/wind is free flowing straight across the site. Oh well. Will replant the extra Nasturtiums and see what happens. hopefully my spuds will have a second growth spurt too.

Have you ever tried a gynoecious (mostly female flowers) cucumber variety? I did 2 types last year, with fabulous results. So I am repeating “calypso” it’s very disease resistant as well. It’s a pickle variety really, but tastes great as a fresh eater. You need to grow next to regular variety to make sure they are pollinated. I live in zone 5b Chicagoland so summers are warm and I find watering daily with regular light organic liquid fertilizer, has been my cucumber game changer.
