The unspoken UK Punjabi alcohol problem - BBC News

  • Alcoholism is a hidden problem in Britain's Punjabi community, because strictly speaking if you're Sikh you're not meant to drink.
    It means it's not something that's talked about openly and when it is, it can lead to people being shunned.
    But with a BBC survey suggesting 27% of British Sikhs report having someone in their family with an alcohol problem, it is an issue which can't be ignored.
    BBC Victoria Derbyshire reporter Tulip Mazumdar has been to meet those affected.

    Unfortunately, Sikhs ignoring their religious principles are largely responsible for this stupid epidemic. Sikhs DONT drink, it is against Sikhism, it has always been against Sikhism, and will continue to be against Sikhism. Sikhs drinking is disrespectful to the the Sikh code of conduct, our Gurus, and is downright embarrassing. Not withstanding these arguments, the amount of abuse towards women and children in "Punjabi" communities because of this drinking problem is abhorrent.

    Punjabi alcoholism is not just in the UK - It's all over North America too. There is something fundamentally broken in the punjabi culture that causes men (and some women) to drink as a way to cope with life. What is so wrong with people's lives that they use alcohol as a coping tool to escape from their realities? Arranged marriages. Marital problems - being stuck living life with a person you don't like. Perhaps you dont like yourself, you are unconscious to the trauma that was inflicted upon you by your parents. Poor parenting: unrealistic, oldage expectations, generational trauma passed down from parents and even grandparents. Peer pressure from the community, depression, anxiety. Not knowing oneself.

      I think it is because there is too much focus on impressing other people in these cultures. People don’t know how to make a decision for themselves. When a human being loses their autonomy in fundamental areas of life, they surrender to things like alcohol that take complete control of their existence. It’s not just punjabis. I would say the same for most south Asians.

    This doc really hit home for me. I'm an American with Indian origins and grew up in a traditional household. All of the parts of this documentary paint the picture of how common alcoholic addiction is in the Punjabi community. This was certainly something that snuck up on me during my days at University. I found myself consuming much more alcohol than my roommates. I certainly had to endure my parents calling me out on my issues and I've been able to overcome it. The part about the blame being on the Indian woman is true I saw this happen within my household with my mother and father. I will say though most of my twenties were lost to alcohol. I'm 28 now and doing much better! Thank you for the Doc BBC News.

    This is sooo deep. I’m Sikh when I was a kid my dad use to drink quite a lot and I remember when I was 7 and was in the car with my dad and we stopped outside a pub and I pleaded with him to not go in and I was crying. But when I was like 14/15 my dad fixed up and only drank on occasions. Especially because one of his brothers died from alcohol. Now today I’m 20 and my dad still drinks but not as much and only does it every now and again which I’m glad... I drink too I go clubbing with my friends and I’m not gonna lie when I drink I do get proper drunk... but thing is I know I can go without alcohol for months if I really wanted too... i use to think that if I kept going on nights out with my friends I would get hooked on it because it’s ran through my family but I can honestly say I’m never dependant on alcohol, even when I’m angry or stressed it never occurs to me to drink... I only drink when I choose to drink Which is for enjoyment but like I said I don’t drink casually everyday or anything like that.

      Algolxxxxxx Algolxxxxxx lol I did not even mention muslims in my comment I actually think that the Quran says a lot of good things, what I meant in the previous comment is that there is a subculture in England’s pakistani community that groom women, just like panjabis drink, your point about sikhs being beaten in India that happens to Muslims in India too but I would never boast about it like you. Are there good people from Pakistan yes are there also people from the Pakistani community who are bad and do grooming yes but will the media call them out no.

    • @Algolxxxxxx
      @Algolxxxxxx 6 лет назад +12

      Gbains Singh It's true both Sikhs and Muslims get a shit deal in India. I also won't deny that there isn't an issue in a part of the Pakistani community with grooming white girls. Using them, and exploiting them. Though not all Pakistanis are the same. There wasn't a single punjabi Pakistani involved in grooming as far I ever came across in the reports. Same goes for so-called "honour killing".
      Perhaps you're aware of the term "Mirpuri". Large section of the UK Pakistani community originates
      from Mirpur or around that region in Pakistan. The region is actually tiny next compared to the Punjab. Mirpuri don't even speak the same way as Punjabis and have their own separate community from the Punjabi Pakistani community. Generally, their attitude and outlook on life is different too. Though try explaining that to white people. They just count Pakistanis and Muslims altogether as one. All they see and hear on the news is "Pakistani Muslim men".

    This was really enlightening. I didn't know that drinking alcohol is forbidden in the Sikh religion. I know many Sikhs and they've all always been very open about having a drink but they also often visit the gurdwara. It's interesting how it's not seen as a shameful to openly defy the religious teachings. Hopefully it all changes and as a community they curb the problem.

      Khaira ਖਹਿਰਾ Thanks for the information Khaira (lovely name btw). İt really highlights the importance of portraying ones religion correctly. İt's good that I can now see the act of drinking as a cultural thing rather than identified as something permissable within the religion. Maybe I can even point it out and have a discussion with my Sikh friends/colleagues about it.

    try non alcoholic beers and low percentage spirits or wine, it might not taste good at first but after 4 years sober myself it's become a really acquired taste that i enjoy now. just include it at the banquet or party like a vegetarian option or something.

    Even in India, Sikh boys have a rep with Whiskey - which suited me as I was an alcoholic when I worked in India - pretty much all of my drinking pals were Sikh - I am white and Scottish, so I come from a culture that drinks to excess and recognise my fellow travellers. Good luck, its hard. Me sober for only 6 months, still hard

    Many thanks for bringing light to this issue. People need to realise alcohol is a drug just like cannabis and other drugs. The cause of far too many social ills in British society. Jago veere. Tujhe ankhi ban na parega. Don’t follow what society does, instead stick to your principles and inspire others.

    • @hizarhayaat
      @hizarhayaat 6 лет назад +33

      Grey Chip do you even know about the different Asian races? If you were to just talk about the one in South Asia, who I think you’re referring to, there’s 1,500+ races/ethnic groups. Yes the rape issue is sadly a hugely disgusting problem that needs to be sorted out right away, but I think you fail to understand it’s not specific to one individual diaspora, it’s a problem that is in the mind of sick humans of all races. The reason the south Asian one is highlighted in the news is because the regions where it was reported it wasn’t handled properly, just like how the celebrity sexual abuse scandal involving majority white males was hugely reported in the news, and still is, because of the lack of action when it occurred. At universities, a majority of sexual abuse is carried out by Caucasian drunk males against drunk females, but that isn’t reported on because it is now properly handled. Judging by the videos you’ve liked on RUclips you’re very narrow minded and this or any other statistical or academic reply won’t change your mind, so there’s no point trying, but that doesn’t mean we can’t point out your bias and flaws.
