Marvin was way ahead of his time . Still so relevant today . Rest in Peace Marvin . Still with us in Spirit and through your music . 💞🙏, Peace , Love , Health and Prosperity to All ,
Usher is no joke when it comes to covering other people's songs. I first heard him do Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get A Witness" when he played him on the sitcom "American Dreams" based on American Bandstand, and his versions of Luther Vandross' "Superstar", Stevie Wonder's "That Girl" as well his medley of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" with "Mercy Mervy Me" proves he ranks among the best. And Trombone Shorty is high on my list as well!
This has me teary eyed. Next to "Flying High," "Save the Children" is my favorite song off of the classic,"What's Going On?" Good job Usher and Trombone.
Damn Usher, you sang the hell out of this song, I have this album, I was going on 16 yrs old when this was out, and times were quite the difference, I would love to here you sing" Ball of Confusion" by the Temptations, I was about to cry on this on. Man you can cover a song, Marvin would be happy with this, Peace, right on!
Trombone Shorty rocks the house with Usher singing from Marvin Gaye's sweet songbook. Rings true today. Obama is putting together some great White House performances.
Surfing RUclips and came by this vid and it brought tears to my eyes because, that was a time when I thought we as a nation turned the corner and were becoming better. Better because we elected a black POTUS, better because we gave permission for gay couples to love and marry. Better because we wanted all of our citizens to be medically taken care of. Its makes me sad as to where we are headed now.
@@trollsthatlol1 I feel y'all. Back then the White House was truly the People's House. As a vocalist, I miss what we had. My president was working for the people while giving us some truly fantastic music moments. Too bad we can't go backwards and get some of that love back.
Lol I'm two years late, but this is from A Celebration of American Creativity: In Performance at the White House in 2016. Honestly, every time the Obamas hosted any kind of performance, he was there lol. And for every black person's funeral come to think of it lol.
@Thomas Oeffling well Nathan East played the bass for "Mercy - Mercy Me" with Jamerson style and he used some of "What's Going On" bassline in that song
J M yeah, the original track sounds good so I give props to Babbitt, but it doesn’t have the level of drive and innovation of Jamerson. Nathan East definitely felt his inner Jamerson here. Does anyone have the breakdown of who played bass on each track of the album?
@@leonardrelford8098 instantly assuming that this person is conservative. So it’s not okay for Ghezal to assume things about the actions of our leaders but it is to assume that this belief and Ghezals viewpoints are conservative? So hypocritical and ignorant. This is precisely why American society has slowly begun collapse.
I respect Bob Babbitt's original bassline, but Nathan East blew it right out of the water...channeling James Jamerson a little, too. East is such a great bassist.
The "Big Three" of Duke Ellington's Orch., also Trummy Young, Carl Fontana, Frank Rosolino, J.J. Johnson, all deceased trombone greats could have played circles around Trombone Shorty.
And here's Usher, and here, yes, over here, here's Obhama, soulful to your requests, and you think it's coincidence? dem b'tchz be playing you short, Badu witchery - hold on, yes of course, I'll watch you, we can lose together, holding hands if you want, or not~

amazing job by usher. wasnt really a fan of him singing mercy mercy me. so far John Legend is the only current artist that I know could hit those high notes and sing it almost like Marvin.

Salute to Usher! Got me Bruh, this medley really felt like Marvin Gaye RIP.
So happy to know Usher actually understands what Marvin Gaye stood for: all men!

Nathan East doing justice to this great James Jamerson bassline
yeah waz just about to ask who the bass payer waz... stopped the video few minutes in... so back to the matter
Although most of bass-playing on the "what's going on" album was done by james jamerson, bob babbitt played the bass on "mercy mercy me".
@Thomas Oeffling well Nathan East played the bass for "Mercy - Mercy Me" with Jamerson style and he used some of "What's Going On" bassline in that song

Mercy was Babbitt but save the children was Jamerson.
Awesome
Caught the hat tip to Bobby Womack at 4:26. Nice.
2:14 this is why I play it 51 timeS
the irony of singing "save the children" to this group of people
the irony of you being here just to spout off at the mouth about your conservative views...

Jeff you’re so knowledgeable about music
Usher looks like a gentleman.
Yo know it’s legit when everyone in the room is singing the song

And Still

Who is the black guy on the horn?
His name Troy Andrews we call him Trombone Shorty in New Orleans
And here's Usher, and here, yes, over here, here's Obhama, soulful to your requests, and you think it's coincidence? dem b'tchz be playing you short, Badu witchery - hold on, yes of course, I'll watch you, we can lose together, holding hands if you want, or not~

Wow he is so gifted and talented too bad I had to thumb him down because of that.... 😡😡😡
Don’t be too hard. No one is perfect. I don’t know what made you think so, but as an artist and a human being, he deserves respects.
Seems too perky.
