      1966-70 are the best years in my opinion. GM dropped all their compression ratios for the 1971 model year. Mopar and Ford lasted one more year building high compression muscle cars but by 1972 the true muscle car era was pretty much over other than a couple bright spots like the 73-74 Trans Am 455SD, the 72-73 Dodge Demon /Plymouth Duster 340, and the 72-74 AMC Javelin 401. But by 1975 there were no true muscle cars left on the market once catalytic converters became mandatory on all vehicles. After 1974 any "muscle car" was basically just a regular passenger car with graphics and trim packages and no real performance upgrades like the Plymouth Volare Roadrunner and AMC Spirit AMX

It still had an "A" title and just about six years ago my friends Dad got a phone call from a man that just bought it and wanted to make sure it was all correct and if he was the original owner of the Cuda Fourmala S just to verify it was really an "A" title not a fraud. That was a car I really should have kept. 383 auto with pistol grip shifter gauge tech option 4.10 posi. Black on Black Bucket seats only two were ordered in Michigan that year. A year before my friends Dad passed away he said to me, I should have bought my Cuda back from that man it's worth over 30K now. We both just laughed and smiled at each other. I remember our local Junk yard "Marquis Auto Salvage Yard" in Mattawan MI. had one of those Trans Ams a "Rag Top" OHC6 with/4bbl Q-jet Ram Hood with the Tec-Tac on the Hood with a 4 speed Muncie an 12 bolt posi. White/Blue all the nice gauge option inside except for the Tach on the hood. This car was in the yard for over ten years and it never got touched. The OHC6 had a big hole in the side of the block were a rod or two let go. But for a 1969 it was a very clean T/A Bird. I first noticed the 69 T/A setting in the Junk yard in 1980 I lived behind the Junk yard our families property was only a few hundred yards apart and knew the owners quite well and tried to talk Todd Marquis out of the 69 T/A every chance I could but he would never sale me the T/A Bird but I did get Todd's 71 Nova in 1980. The sad story ends when the scrap metal prices went up Todd had a high school friend of his Bob Parchel come through the yard and mark the cars with a Big Red X that should be crushed and that sweet 69 T/A had three Big Red X's on it. I tried to save that 69 T/A one more time but to no avail Todd put it an many other 60's an 70's mucle car's (a true 66 SS Chevy II L79 also) in there home made crusher and trucked them flat wonderful old Hot Rod's off to a Bigger Recycling Yard out of State to Gary Indiana. Both George Marquis an his Son Todd Marquis had many sweet old car's starting from the 1930's up to 1990's when George the Dad died Todd was the owner with his Mom for many years then his Mom died and Todd working full time at GM never did much with the Junk Yard his Dad built up over the year's. Todd Marquis finally had every vehicle crushed that was in the Junk Yard and let another man Brian take over the Junk Yard for a few years then finally Todd Marquis past away a few years back. I've always wondered how many sweet old car's like that 69 T/A an 66 SS Chevy II L79 and many sweet old Truck's have been crushed over the year's in those little Salvage Yards across America and Canada like "Marquis Auto Salvage Yard" ??? Only a few people would know like me because I use to wonder through that old Salvage Yard with my Hunting friend Mike B many times over the year's as we went Duck Hunting on the pond we would stop an dream about owning one of those old 60's or 70's Hot Rod's just rusting away in "Marquis Auto Salvage Yard"...

    I always loved the Trans Am growing up. My cousin had a black 68 firebird 400. I was 14 and he was about five years older than me. He would scare or thrill the heck out of me, not really sure which, riding in that car. One time he laid rubber all the way up the street in that car. My Dad was angry at him for doing that in our neighborhood. I later bought a new 73 Trans Am but it was nothing like his 68. That Ram Air IV engine in this video is maybe one of the top 5 engines built in the muscle car era.

    Hey Kevin. Here's an idea. Ever thought of taking this show on the road ? No argument the " Brother's collection " isn't enough to keep things crankin but what about all the other cars that have been held on to with appreciation ?? My brother has a 68 firebird 400. Numbers matching w 4 speed and posi that my brother took over after our dad passed. Original engine built by a local engine builder that went to school w out dad and my brother has fished the ground up restoration our dad started. Not rotisserie but ground up. Was painted in my garage by a resto spray man. How about a little shown for these cars ? We all love these cars and was just wondering if maybe we could show some love for some of the maybe less then perfect cars that have had more love than money put into them ( and lots of money but less than the bothers collection) and still get driven on a daily or weekly basis that people have so much of the blood sweat and tears Into something worthwhile to see that gets the daily or weekly drive by people who love these rides !!! Just a thought. Pls think about this. Thanks Tony

    How does the Ram Air III make 366 hp and the Ram Air IV make 345 ..my Aunts fanny! In 2009 JT Glasgo chassis dyno'ed two stock Ram Air IV GTO's, three pulls each. The 69 GTO averaged 392 rwhp and the 70 GTO averaged 384 rwhp. In 1974 I pulled a 400 Ram Air III engine and turbo 400 tranny out of a wrecked 69 Judge and took the engine to Sun Auto in Newark Ca, to rebuild it to stock spec's but ..put in a Ram Air IV cam and new Holley 650 spread bore carb. I dropped them into my 68 Firebird and when the engine broke in, I took the car back to Sun and they dialed in the jets ..then I took it down the street to Fremont Drags and ran 12.87 at 112 mph ...with my best friend riding shotgun! There's no doubt the Ram Air IV made closer to 450 bhp (392 + 15% drive train loss)

    • @michaelclarke9488
      @michaelclarke9488 5 лет назад +2

      Benevolent Protector, ‘back in the day’ hp figures were under rated by the manufacturers. Typically in an attempt to keep these cars insurable. I’m confident that if one were to build a ram air IV to factory specs and put it on a dyno, you’d see it make considerably more power than the factory rating.

    • @ScarlettFire341
      @ScarlettFire341 5 лет назад +2

      @@michaelclarke9488 The RA 3 in 1969 GTO was rated at 366 HP and the "exact motor" in the 1969 TA was rated at 345 HP BECAUSE GM wanted the king of Pontiac to be GTO. The TA was set up with a less aggressive 4 bbl linkage so that it was slight less on the quick response +-

      @@ScarlettFire341 Ok, that's good to know! Neither Pontiac or Buick approved of GM's hypocritical control over their marketing strategies, with GM trying to prevent both those divisions from putting the 455 engines in their full size sedan platforms, however, the TA being more of a road race platform, the throttle mod makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the feedback.

    Such a cool car and love all that old Detroit iron. But the Challenger TA was also awesome and hot looking, with side exit pipes and is the other Trans Am for a bit of old school muscle trivia in automotive history. We are located in AZ, and there are a lot of nice cars everywhere here. Was out with my challenger srt8 earlier today, and saw a sweet gen1 camaro ss in black & white that was gorgeous and sounded really mean. During the summer months, you don't see as many because of the heat. But during the first round of the Barrett-Jackson in January, there are awesome machines everywhere and is almost like the glory days of the 60s/70s sometimes. With several other auction houses in the area that go one after another, and is a pretty healthy car scene until the summer months

    The RA IV engine was 345 hp in the Trans Am, but 370 hp in the GTO. I read somewhere the difference in hp was simply a limiter on the throttle cable that prevented the carb from opening all the way up. You could get the full 370 hp by simply removing the limiter from the throttle cable so the carb could open all the way. This is the kind of useless automotive trivia that I love.

    Up there in my top 10 favorite muscle cars between 1967-1973. A rare muscle car that could handle, stop AND accelerate with looks to die for.
    That the color combo is unique to that model and year to distinguish it from lesser models when everyone else, like today, makes the lesser models look like the top dogs, was ballsy. Either buy this color package or don't buy the car! F U if you don't like white w/blue stripes and blue interior. They sold all built in half a year as TAs were 69 1/2 only as a send off tribute before the next new gen came out. A great send off!
    These are going for $120k for Ram Air IIIs -$225k for Ram Air IVs. Double the price of an already rare car. And the IIIs tended to grenade at high rpms so most have NOMs.

    Without doubt,Pontiac's first and finest Trans Am.It's my favorite,i'd love to own one.Point of note,did '69 T/A's have that steering wheel?or is this from a later one.BTW,I prefer the hardtop,the convertibles are just so rare,you'd be scared of being out in it!

    Didn’t see hardly any of these back in the day . They were very expensive , so most of the customer base that wanted one , couldn’t afford it . They never mention that in any of these muscle car reviews .

    My aunt gave me her 68 GTO in trade for my 75 Chrysler imperial. Hahaha. Then I traded it for a brand new 79 Black on black Z28 where those hood vent louvers opened up when you floored it. After a while I regretted loosing the 🐐 goat.

      Ralph Valkenhoff: I've owned 2 1979 Z/28's and knew many people that owned them and there's or my Hood's did not open up from the factory (But I made my factory forward facing tear drop scoop into a Ram-Air type). The Second Generation body style 77-79 rubber nosed bumper Z/28's did not have functional hood scoops. The Second Generation rubber nosed bumper Z/28's that did have the factory hood scoop/cowal that Was functional and opened up was from 80-81with functional reverse tear drop cowl type Hood's. And the later Z's like the Third Generation 1982-92 they also had functional type Ram-Air and Cowl type Hood's from the factory. But some one could have put an 80-81 reverse tear drop cowl type hood on your 79 Z/28 or your Z/28 could have been a bastard year titled as a 79 Z/28 but was an early 80's Z/28 ?? GM has made half year's many times like the 70-1/2 Z/28 Camaro. Just maybe you had a bastard 1/2 year 79/80 Z/28 ?? No way of knowing unless you have the build sheet from your 79 Z/28 ??

      @@dustinsirrine227 I was a stupid 18 year old back then and really didn't know much of anything and I still don't but, what I did know was how cool that cowl hood flap was. You know after thinking about it, I had it for a while before I realized it opened up when you step on it. I lived in Fresno CA at the time and got my truck drivers license right out of High school and made a ton of money at a young age. What better way to spend it then on a new black z. I had it for few years then bought another Mopar. Now I have a new RAM HEMI which I believe would have smoked that z. LoL.

    Great car. I've had about 3 chances to own a '69 Trans Am, but each time things didn't work out. Just wondering, is that chrome alternator pulley and fan correct for this car?

  • @MrBluzhound
    @MrBluzhound 5 лет назад

    On the one hand, it’s great that ‘the Brother’s’ have a collection of rare cars so we can all ogle. On the other hand, it’s a shame so many cars are sitting in a warehouse instead of being enjoyed on the tree lined Main St. and at the local Monday night cruise-in....

      @David miorgan I did some research. Car Life road tested a 69 SJ 455/390; Google it. Curb weight was 4180 pounds. That's not "thousands of pounds more" than a GTO. And 1/4 mile in 14.1 seconds. That ain't bad, and probably IS faster than some GTOs ! Maybe YOU need to do a little research :-)
