    1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air III 4-Speed Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #141
    The 1969 Pontiac Trans Am was the first of this legendary line of Muscle Cars, and we spent some time with a Ram Air III 4-speed version for this episode of Muscle Car Of The Week from The Brothers Collection.
    1969 was the first year for the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am model, which took the basic Firebird platform and pushed it towards the moon in both style and performance. There are lots of things to like about these cars, and this particular car has ‘em all.
    The most obvious difference between a base model Firebird and the racy Trans Am is the styling. Pontiac designers added all the right elements in all the right places to make this car stand out. The nose features clean, body colored headlight bezels and a narrow chrome bumper that doubles as the grille surround. Trans Am cars received their own special dual-snorkel hood with a functional ram air system to feed the 400 cube V8 all the fresh air it could handle. Functional air extractors are mounted on the fenders to help heat escape from under the hood… and these Pontiacs were capable of making some heat on the street!
    The rear view is crowned by a sleek 2 pedestal rear spoiler that wraps down on the ends to follow the contours of the quarter panels, a look that is far more integrated than many bolt-on spoilers of the time.
    In fact, all the Trans Am additions to the body appear “designed in” and not just added on, but one of the coolest features are the stripes. These cars were only available in Cameo White with two Tyrol Blue stripes that start at the nose of the car, and go up over the roof… then back down the rear deck ending in the solid blue tail panel. Now factory applied stripes were pretty unusual in 1969, especially stripes going over the roof of a car. The look is like nothing else on the road, and to me, this Firebird almost appears to have aerospace theme to the design.

    Who else would take the Firebird over the Camaro? :)

      I like the Firebird Formula and the Trans Am more than a Camaro , but would never turn down a deal on a Rally Sport , Super Sport or Z28 of the same years . Pontiac did try harder to make the Firebird handle better than the Camaro and the sound of a Pontiac V8 is unmistakable and that Chevy dropped the Z28 from 75' to 77' and Pontiac tried to keep Performance going when other MFG's were downsizing IE the Mustang 2 ,Pontiac kept it up until 81' . but the handling was awesome even if the power was way down .Pontiac fought for us !

    All 69 Trans Am’s would have either white line or white letter tires. No black or redline tires were available.

    Very interesting video as usual Kevin, you're doing a great job teaching the history of Muscle Cars. I think it would be nice if the cars could be mic'd in a better way because the sound is not very representative and don't do these cars true justice.
    Also, I hope you'll make a video of a '71 BOSS 351 in the future.
    Great channel, Thanks

    I remember when these came out,
    Love the wht/blue metallic.
    I also remember a John Klaud Kiley (forgive spelling pls) 69 Camaro edition with Pearlesent White/ Blue Stripe. Saw at a ski show.
    Really appreciate how completely original the car's you review are. But those Red line tire's can't be right.
    Thanks for all you do & the great historic details.!

    WOW, 4200 bucks! that was getting a little pricey for the 60's. I think that was around spending today's 22,000 price tag. Ram air 3 cam was around 224 degree duration @ .050s.

    The silver Trans Am Kevin talked about was the one tested by Hot Rod magazine in 1969. It still exists. and was shown recently in Muscle Car Review I believe or maybe Pontiac magazine. The engine was the Ram Air III and was the same as the GTO but there was a screw that kept the carb from opening
    fully so the TA had 345 hp instead of 366 hp like the GTO.
    New owners could remove the screw and waa la a gain of 21 hp.
    In addition to the red or green interiors there were other odd examples made. A few and I mean a few had the stripe go over the top of the spoiler. It can be seen on this example that the pedestals are blue but not the spoiler itself. I've always believed things like this are the result of miscommunication. Somebody filling in for the normal guy who had to leave. The mistake was probably caught but let slide because of the cost in time and effort to fix. And they thought probably it was no big deal. So whomever has one has a rare one.
    So just a few fyi's from that time period but here's one more. Motor Trend's test car was fast really fast. Turns out it had the legendary 303 cid that they tested. It definitely impressed them. No 5500 rpm rev limit on that one. Much higher.

    What's a good gear ratio with a super t-10 transmission 4 speed and in a 10-bolt rear with a 350 Chevy making 367 HP

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  2 месяца назад +1

      Great question. First, you need to define what you want to do with the car, and also the tire size. For highway cruising, you'll want something around 3.55:1 or numerically lower, like a 3.23. This will keep the RPMS manageable at speed. However, if you plan on drag racing the car, you want to go through the traps just as your engine is making peak power in 4th gear. Knowing the horsepower curve will tell you what that RPM is. If you google hp tire size gear ratio calculators, you'll find some cool tools to help you out!

      @@V8TV Thank you for your response, my tire size is 25 and 1/2 in. What I’m looking for is good highway cruiser without giving up too much acceleration, right now I don’t know what gear ratio I have in the transmission or the rear but I will be rebuilding both. What combo complements each other?

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  2 месяца назад

      You sound like a perfect candidate for a Tremec TKX 5-speed. Nice low first gear, overdrive in 5th for low rpm cruising, no floor mods needed. Otherwise, we should find out what 4 speed you have. 4th is going to be 1:1 regardless, but the first 3 gears have different ratios depending on what you have. I'm guessing it's a Muncie of some sort?

    Find a 1969 Firebird that is White with a Blue vinyl top and a blue interior. 400 ci with a Rochester quadrajet. Not a Trans Am. That was my first car and I have never even been able to find a picture of one. I bet you can't because I've tried very hard but you would be my heroes if you could even post a picture of one.
