My late husband was a chemical engineer for P&G many moons ago and he believed Tide was worth the price. And yes, cut the suggested amount by at least half and it's still effective as well as very affordable. Less rinsing too. While convenient, pods and sheets use a petroleum (read plastic) binder that is not good for the environment or your clothes. Packaging is an issue for detergents and there is no easy answer. I appreciate you figuring out which brands give us the best "bang for our buck"!

Fabulous information, Carolyn. Thanks! I climbed aboard the Tide Train as well, largely because it is so versatile (a little Tide in warm water is a great way to clean your car, for instance). I agree about the pods, but for a different reason. The pods are designed to deliver the maximum amount of product that can (usually) be rinsed out; NOT the minimum amount necessary to clean the laundry. I wait for specials (my local market has a senior's discount day) and then 'stack coupons' and pay with a cash-back credit card. I typically get 20% to 25% off, which helps justify the higher cost, in my mind. It comes out about the same as the Purex.

@@lindacgrace2973 Yes! I feel like I couldn’t make an already long video longer by starting a lecture about coupons, but playing the coupon/cash back game is definitely the way to go if you really want the Tide at a more budget price.

Xtra is made by the same people who make Arm & Hammer. The only difference is Xtra is the watered-down version of their big label brand. If you mix it with Oxi Clean or Brillo Oxy (Both also made by Arm & Hammer), it work perfectly fine.

Unfortunately, I have two huge containers of an off-brand to work my way through, which could easily take a couple years, even though I'm not fond of the smell of either one. It's just old retired lady me with my older clothes and household goods, and I don't make too many stains. I may hit the Dollar Tree for a small container of Tide to see if my older dish towels and rags might brighten up a bit.

Have you heard of "soap nuts"?
    We've just started using them.
They're nuts that have a natural soap trait that, when soaked or steeped, release the soap. They were recommended to me and I decided to give them a try because they are chemical and packaging free. We are loving them.
You take 5 nuts, put them in the small muslin bag provided. Some people send them through the wash like this. Another option (one we do) is to to steep the bag in a quart of hot water (tea kettle) for a few minutes. Take the bag out and let your nuts dry out. Pour the soap nut tea into the liquid detergent tray and you're done. I just threw out the first 5 nuts that I've been using -- after about 20 loads of laundry. The little bag I bought on amazon was 8.00 and I got about 40 nuts in it.
We don't have the stain load in this house that you do. But, I did use them last night on a load with some bloody clothes and the blood came out.
No smell, no oversuds, no packaging, no chemicals. Love!
(This is the second attempt I'm making at this comment. I don't know what happened to the first one. But I'm so impressed with soap nuts, I'll try again. lol)

It was easier to get all the detergent out of the container than what I had been using. Good to know that it does a great job on stains. I'm retired & don't have to deal with stains very often. I'm going to try Purex, the next time I see it on sale. The price per load chart seems to use only giant sizes of the products. If you are concerned about laundry sheet performance, get the ones made in China. In China, they wash in tap cold. Most households don't have hot water hooked up for laundry. They engineer detergents with that in mind.

Here's some info for you, tested by me for YEARZZZ. The Aldi generics for Tide and Gain are fantastic, and you can water them down one part soap to 1.5 parts water. I use one of my old jumbo detergent bottles with a spout, pour in the 100 oz. of whichever soap i have purchased, and then add 1.5 of the same bottle filled with water. That creates 250 oz of soap for my $8 purchase.

The trend is moving away from Scented products which is why most companies are making unscented versions of all their products. A lot of chemicals can be hidden behind the label ‘fragrance’ which are known hormone disrupters, and a lot of scented products like candles and shampoos are addictive. Developing bodies are most vulnerable.

I still have had a bar of Fels Naptha soap for at least 18 years that I had purchased to make homemade laundry soap/detergent (which by the way turned out to be a big no for me) but that bar of soap haa been a life saver!!!! I take a stain and dampen it and then take the bar and rub on the stain. I let it soak in for a few minutes or so and if needed scrub the stain. Then rinse it out and either wash it with regular laundry or hang dry. It is amazing!!! I actually had purchased several bars of that soap and gave one to my oldest daughter and she loves it for a stain cleaner too!!! I use on carpet stains too!!! It does not hurt or damage colored clothes or carpets either. Oh and I tried Tide years ago and it started aging or removing the colors from my clothes especially dark ones very quickly. So that was a no for me
