In Ireland coffee grounds are left by Starbucks for free collection for one's flower beds since the grounds are said to repel ants and slugs. This avoids the grounds ending up in landfill.

I'm a petit woman and glasses are usually too big for me. Then I realized I can buy children's glasses. Not only do they fit snug, but they're so much cheaper than "adult" glasses.

Zenni online you can get glasses w lenses for like $30. I thought years ago it was a scam. Nope. I have met so many people who got them and they’re nice! Im going to order some. I realized my feet are 6.5/7 and fit into kids boots!

Read to yor kids..that's such good advice. My 3 youngest grandkids live the closest, an hour away. During the Pandemic, our religious meetings were on Zoom. And I had a brainstorm. One of my friends had the complete 1973 paperback series of The little house on the Prairie books. So, at 8 o'clock, 5 nights a week, I would read to her, on Zoom. She was already reading on her own, (started reading at 3,) and we still read together on Zoom. And her two younger brothers have their own time with me as well. It's a wonderful way to end the day with them. And it's free. (Library books and the 45 minutes that Zoom allows. If we go over, we just log off and back on!)
With soaps, shampoos, liquid laundry detergents, etc., cut by 50% water. They work just as well as full strength. Then, put in about half the amount recommended by the manufacturer. I like the idea of writing the date on the container so you know how long it lasts. I made a medium bottle of dish washing liquid last 6 years once. I thought that was a fabulous record until I found someone who made a bottle last 7 years. It takes such a small amount of dishwashing liquid to get dishes clean.
When you have clothing, linens, drapes... anything that you don't want to use for its original use, or it doesn't fit any longer, make it into something else. Clothes that don't fit you any more but still have good fabric can be turned into children's clothing, sheets can become curtains, drapes can become a bedspread or upholstery cover...or a dress... Old towels can become cleaning cloths, pet beds or layered into pot holders. Instead of getting rid of things, turn them into something else If possible.

My library has a seed library. Every person with a library card gets 30 packets of their choice. Limited variety but most are locally acclimated! Also, using library resources increases each library’s grant amounts. So please don’t think that you should leave things/services for “those who need it more.” Your library is FOR YOU, and using it more helps everyone.

My library even has a program that allows them to order from other libraries (including universities) books they don’t have. Sometimes it has 2 weeks instead of 3 weeks to read. Sometimes you may be asked to pay a dollar or 2 (I’ve never had to pay but they warn you). I live in Maryland but have gotten a book from Alaska 🎉.
I love your channel Hilary! So many of the things you recommend remind me of my darling Grandma Laura…. She would use the same tea bag over and over for a couple days. She is the person who taught me about the joy of the ritual. When we had “tea” together, it didn’t matter that I was drinking, warm water in a little tiny plastic tea cup. It was that I was spending wonderful time with my grandma.❤❤

Piggybacking off the college move out finds-when living in my first apartment, I found a solid wood, designer dresser (from the 1960s) during a neighboring apartment clean out. Twenty years later and I still use it; it’s the best quality piece of furniture I own.
Wholeheartedly agree! I’ve got a few pieces my father made with solid wood almost 20 years ago still in near-perfect condition. Solid wood beats particleboard any day!
I found a dresser about 20yrs ago by the dumpster. The mirror part had broken off but you could barely notice it & it was missing a few drawer knobs. I spent less than $5 replacing the knobs & still use it. 😊
I like to make a full batch of coffee and have one cup then refrigerate the rest and have it the next morning . It uses less grounds than making 2 small batches, it also saves time
Love all these tips. One thing I want to encourage people to think about it when buying used always check for bedbugs, especially on used bedroom furniture and couches. This past few years have created a severe rise in these buggers. Inspect, wash, vacuum, steam clean everything and dry it well before brining it in your house and be mindful of putting it in your car.
TOTALLY. It's for this reason I still don't buy upholstered furniture or mattresses used. I'm sure you can get good deals and treat them correctly, I just haven't!

On the seasonal clearance: I've noticed that the best sales actually happen two to four weeks prior to the major holiday theyre associated with. Swimsuits and light seasonal items seem to go on the best sale about a month before the start of the season or maybe during the first month. By the time anything goes on sale beyond those initial sales there tends to be very little left. At my local walmart the only Christmas ornaments left when they go on 70%+ sale is the stuff that looks like its from the dollar store. I think the lesson here is to watch your local sales routine!
A great list! Only thing i disagree with is eating less meat. since switching to carnivore i have gotten off of all sorts of medication, and i no longer buy expensive skincare or even hairloss product. Plus, i dropped weight and only eat once a day which saves on groceries!! Changed my life!
I only own light weight clothing items so that I can hand wash everything and when the weather gets cool I simply add more layers so I have a couple of different sizes of light weight clothes.

Car stuff:
Bundle auto and homeowner’s insurance for a discount.
Maintain your car, especially keeping your tires properly inflated. Use higher quality (yes, higher $, like Mobil) gas as they have detergents that will get you better mileage.
Watch your speed, no jackrabbit starts (you’ll just “piss gas” as my dad used to say).
Dawn detergent cleans EVERYTHING..except hair cut it causes hair loss.
I purchased my chest freezer at Costco a few years ago and it has definitely paid for itself! I also keep scraps and make my own vegetable stock or chicken/turkey stock. I'm currently defrosting vegetable, turkey and seafood stock for recipes I'm making this weekend.
What types of recipes do you use seafood stock in? Like a seafood chowder? I've always just used chicken broth in those... Sounds amazing!

Many years ago, my mom experimented with liquid, laundry detergent and found she could use 25% laundry detergent and 75% water and the clothes still came out justice clean and the clothes actually lasted longer because there was no detergent buildup in them as they’re normally is with laundry detergent today. We use Nellies powdered laundry soap, and have been able to eliminate fabric softener because, there’s no residue in the clothes which is part of what makes them hard when they are dry if you don’t use fabric softener. Less soap allows the clothes to last longer which saves money as well. We also use a clothesline or a drying rack whenever possible and avoid the dryer. Fabric is not as soft, but most things it doesn’t matter.
My son while in college " trash picked "a like new BBQ 2 interbational students were hauling it to the curb, he stopped and asked them if they were tossing it?, they helped him load it i to his truck. I think ge said they used it twice for anerican bbq. My son has since gradyated relicsted with a good full time year round jib & is still useing that grill several years later! Keep your eyes open ask abd receive.😊

I like watching RUclipsrs who trash pick at university apartment dumpsters. Some that specialize in college students, get extra dumpsters at that time of year. In addition to items many find money.

two thoughts, I keep my hot water heater off at the breaker until 15 minutes before I nee the water heated. then I only use hot water side of the faucet and turn it off at the breaker before I get into the shower . I put my shampoo into a pump container from another product. measuring it helps me use way less. I do the same for my dish liquid. I use a pump bottle for hand soap which is really cheap dish detergent with some alcohol in it in the winter. I have been using the same shampoo for over a year and have a long ways to go yet.
Totally agree with the hand pump! I've also tested wrapping a rubber band/hair elastic around the neck of the pump so it doesn't go down as much (mostly for soap in the bathroom my kids use...otherwise they use way too much for their little hands).
The hot water heater trick sounds good too! I'd just keep forgetting to flip it on/off though. 😂

Check consignment shops for clothes, home goods, furniture…We got a Stickley end table, normally $800 (yes, you read that right) for $125. I got a brand new pair of Columbia winter boots for $25.
Check thrift shops for dishes and cookware, and estate sales for appliances, furniture, lamps, etc.
I don't know where you live, but here in Maryland, there are these twice a year events (usually Spring and Fall) called Wee Sales. They are huge, and are chock full of kids clothes and paraphernalia, like cribs strollers, high chairs, etc. My daughter-in-law buys and sells her kids clothes, and actually buys name brand stuff for pennies on the dollar.(Recently a Rothschild dress coat for her daughter for $5!) Also try organizations like Mothers of Multiples.

Most of this is really good advice. I hope ppl who need this help gets it. Unfortunately my library doesn't offer spices to try. Cause that would be so cool to try new things to at least find out if you like them before buying a container of it, only to find out you don't like the flavor. Many libraries have a yearly questionnaire asking for ideas and concerns. Or a comment box. I love my libraries. I rarely complain but I did complain when I found pornography (playboys, the story of O) and porn books were on the sale rack, available to anyone without supervision. Seems obvious to me, but they said they don’t check item just put them out. I just said please check them. The public library is not the place to sell pornography.

If you live in a larger city/ metropolitan area, local libraries can also offer free admission to certain museums 🙌🏾 I know LAPL does for us hear in LA
Once a year there is a Museum day. A local museum offers a year pass for half price ($12 for family). But the pass works for about 100 museum across the country and as a 20-50% off discount pass for many more. There is a website for this but I can’t remember. Being frugal, I would take some down time and see which museum offers the sale on museum day and the lowest cost and buy from their website. But to be honest I just bought the family pass at the local museum cause $12 was a great price to me. It was an amazing interactive museum for adults and children. P.S. as my frugality paid off I usually left a donation. But check out local parks, one park offers free and very low cast toddler to teen nature walks and crafts. For those who qualify (low income) my county also has “scholarships” for sports programs including classes like dance. The scholarships are for 0-17 years.
That was fun with some added food for thought! Totally agree with using less product - I still shampoo twice but use a TINY bit of shampoo on the first wash and a little more on the second so my hair gets really clean - no need for heaps each time. Also, dishwasher tablets are stupidly expensive and one tablet = one wash. I've started using bicarb soda with half a teaspoon of dish detergent and it works just as well - and better for the environment, WAY cheaper and I think healthier too! Cheers from Australia!!
So I’ve seen enough of the Great British Baking Show to know what bicarb is, but I’d never thought to put it in my washing machine! I’ll have to try that!

@@kamicrum4408 I agree but I'm conscious of how thick the product is to begin with. For example, I was diluting dishwashing liquid when I refilled my sink side pump but I was watching it fall through the dish scrubber and using more so now I just pump out a bit less. Same with shampoo, I know a TINY pea sized blob does the job so I don't dilute it - until that container is empty and then heck YES, getting another couple of washes out of it is SO satisfying! Am I warped that I get fun out of squeezing every bit out of these things? Ummm, maybe. But it's fun, and frugal, and not harming anyone else so I ain't gonna stop! Cheers and blessings from Oz!!

A freezer has to be energy star efficient or it doesn't pay to run a freezer
The location of your freezer is important. Do not put it in a shed or garage or back porch where it is in a hot environment. Even had it where the hot summer sun was on it. I have seen people do this. They wonder why the electric bill went up or the compressor failed. It won"t matter how energy efficient it is in the wrong location.
And you can get cheap freezer from the store. Watch for a sale, look for online/offline coupon, if a vet use vet discount, buy discounted gift cards for the store to pay, check for state and electric company rebate for energy efficient freezers. I bought an upright energy efficient freezer $800 originally and paid $350 after all sales, discounts, gift cards and rebates. Want another idea for less cash out of pocket, use rebate apps like Fetch, Ibotta and others to earn gift cards, most offer Home Depot and Lowe’s.

I worked for a high end linen manufacturer years ago and we did an installation at a $1000 a night to start hotel. That was the first time I heard that towels should be washed after you shower. I asked the owner how dirty you could be after you just cleanses and she said that all that was actually needed was for the towel to fully dry before the next use so the damp did not cause mildew and mustiness. I installed a Myson towel warmer in my home as both my husband and I use bathsheets being over 6 ft and they take about an hour and a half to dry. The warmer also serves as ambient heat in the bathroom while using less power than a washing machine or dryer. We change our towels out once a week. Alternatively when we travel to warmer climates we hang them on the line or outside to air/sun dry!

Want to know a real frugal trick and it saves appliances from the landfill actually keep the OLD appliances till their dead dying done. People are in a rush to purchase energy efficient appliances that lasts 7 to 10 years if one is lucky, and here i am using my 28 year old oven GE , made in Canada, with my 15 year old kitchen fridge, and a fridge in the basement that is 35 years old.
I replace appliances ONLY when they are no longer fixable, meaning appliances dont need to be pretty as long as they work. I did replace my 24 year old Inglis washer and dryer when they stopped working and bought amana. 4 years later the washing machine mother board went, however the dryer is still good. I did buy a new washing machine after my husband, an electrician, attenpted to repair the machine but it was still acting up.
If my fridge does go i plan to buy a refurbished one.
My appliances still look great because i take care of them as well.
Now THAT would be a cool frugal experiment: the energy cost savings from an energy efficient appliance VS the cost of a new machine spread out over time. Because you’re right, they don’t make them like they used to. I could see the results swinging either way!
@Homegrown_Hillary well my stove was a wedding gift from my grandpa, he bought it for me in 1995, was able to go my wedding in 1996 but passed a few months later. So considering it was a gift, it's priceless. My fridge doesn't have bells nor whistles, but it works. My goal is to have my stove last as long as my best friends mom, her mom used the same stove from 1967 till she moved out of her home in 2021. ❤
I love the motto Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without and for me this applies to appliances.....the environmental cost of these appliances in landfills is astronomical compared to the few cents, pennies and bits n bobs of a dollar one can save in a year on one's energy bills.
I live in Canada and last year our electric water bill was close to 400 dollars in July and August so 400 dollars each month, needless to say we also got rid of the above ground pool we had for 15 years even on a timer it was an energy vampire ....our bill is cheaper this year thank goodness

Compare a refurbished machine to buying on sale, with discount coupon, rebates, discounted gift cards or earn gift cards with apps like fetch. I got a brand new refrigerator $1,100 sale $750 and after discount, rebate, etc it cost $350 + tax.

I use all my glass coffee and salsa jars as cups. They are sturdier than glassware and love the look especially when I make my own cold coffee drinks❤.
Also, for tortilla eaters. I save my leftover already heated tortillas that got cold. I save in a zip lock bag and then make triangles and massage oil on them and put in air fryer. Homemade chips for salsa or chilaquiles breakfast.
We don't have an air fryer, but we've had good luck using the toaster oven for the same purpose.
And yes to random jars and drinking classes, too! My kids love jam jars for their hot cocoa in the morning. 🥰
If you don’t like the screw on lid lip. There is a kit that allows you to cut it off and smooth the lip for easy drinking. It can also be used to create vases, etc.

My library has a make it center where you can use expensive machines to do handicrafts. Like a quilting machine, circuit machine, and a lot more.
Also if you don’t want to leave the house books, audio books, and movies can be checked out from home.

I write the date on everything and then write it on a list when its empty. This tells me how long it lasted so i can plan ahead when purchasing another item.
I add grounds to my coffee, pour left over coffee in bavk with water

I don’t drink coffee but my ex did. He required fresh ground. So I would buy the beans and ground to a Turkish grind. That uses half the amount recommended to use. Then, I saved the leftover grounds in refrigerator and then added half the usual amount of coffee to yesterday’s grounds and brew. Big savings. Less than regular bought can coffee on sale w/ coupon.

I plan to go to washable mini pads. I discovered these from another saver and I was intrigued.
I beefed up the reusable grocery bags by putting cardboard in the bottom and 2 brown paper bags inside them. I fold the top of the brown bags down to meet the top of the reusable bags and hot glue the bags, the brown bags as well as the handles in place. This makes the bags strong. I also have large, plastic carry baskets from the dollar tree for heavy items. Also, I'm a canner so I got rid of drinking glasses. We use the empty canning jars instead.
The Dutch have a special tool called a Flessenlikker to clean all the bits out of the bottom of jars and bottles, highly recommend!
I got rid of my microwave. It is healthy..changes how I batch cook
I love the tip about writing dates on things so you know how long it takes to use them!
To add onto that, when my soap/shampoo/etc gets low in the bottle, I water it down a little bit so it lasts longer and I can get ALL the product out of the container 😂
EDIT: Also, if you work from home, that can save you $$ on your car insurance, so make sure your insurance company knows if you've switched to WFH :)

@@SG-df9er I'm not familiar with "Rest in Peace" specifically, but there are plenty of charitable organizations in the US that buy the debts from either hospitals or debt collectors (because the people can't pay). And then, instead of aggressively calling and hounding the people, as most debt collectors do, they forgive the debt.
I have several medical bills. Besides “Rest in Peace” what could I type into a search engine to bring up more if they won’t take it?? Lol ya I’m a little unbelieving that they’ll take mine (buy) 😵💫🤕🫥❤️🩹
Please check and see if your family qualifies for low cost state (Maryland) insurance or Medicaid. In my state a family of three qualifies if they make less than $33,064 and a family of four is $39,900. The Medicaid includes dental, prescriptions and eye exams (not sure about glasses). But each state has different qualifying amounts so check. Federally all states can offer insurance for just children with higher income.
i use old chip pan fat to paint on green moss fence goes on easy and get rid of the oil its still clean 9 months later
Paper bags can be given a second use by carefully folding them and if not required in your own home they can be given into second hand stores.
Or food banks
I got a discount with my car insurance by being a member of the local credit union, internet company gave me $15 credit to put an advertising sign in my yard for 2 weeks, dropped Verizon because their cheapest phone service was $80. and use net10 zero for $40 that uses Verizon towers.

If you live in an apartment. My insurance gives a discount with renters insurance. The cheapest policy was $40 a year to save $200 a year only my car insurance.
Talk about buying reusable containers like the pouches....when my 3 kids was young, preteen, they started eating me out of house and home and they always had friends over eating snacks too.
I took to buying the plastic rubbermaid 1/2 cup and 1 cup containers and I would buy or make bulk apple sausce and divide up, canned or fresh fruit and divide up, make puddings and jellos, yougurt with frozen berries. I even started dividing up leftover foods into the individual bowls for ex mac n cheese in one, mashed potatoes in one, leftover casserole in one...i would usually end up with several of each then i used small piece of masking tape and labeled with a date so I would know when it was made and when it was old. By doing this, I rarely ever had to throw anything out, saved so much money is after school snacks. It really improved my food budget. And they never asked what there was to eat. It was so easy for them to grab and heat and or eat as needed. They could pick and choose, as I always had several choices in the fridge. They was eating way healthier this way.
Now I still do this for my grand babies but i have changed from plastic rubbermade containers to 1/2 pint mason jars and resuse the old lids or use a small 1/2 c to 1 c pyrex glass bowls with lids.

You can go to the .gov link in the description, pick your state, and then input your last name and it will search the database for you. Or if you’ve lived in multiple states or have a maiden name, search with those too. Happy hunting!
I’ve found that the .gov doesn’t cover everything, example my electric company is a coop. The give bill rebates once a year and if you move it can be cash. You have to check through their website. I’ve seen cash rebates of $5 and $350. For businesses it can run into the thousands.

Hillary when I hear you say use a towel for a week I think eww. Gross. I’m 65 retired nurses aide. My son pointed out when he was young on Discovery channel that after showering how much germs come off in the towels. I would rather buy more towels and I don’t mind doing laundry.
Buy kids toothbrushes they are considerably cheaper and work better as i find adult brushes too bulky.

Yeah! So every year, tons of lawyers will sue big corporations they claim have harmed a large group of people (anywhere from hundreds to millions of people). Often, the big corporations will decide the legal fight would be too expensive, so they settle the lawsuit by paying a ton of money.
If you are one of the people the company harmed, that means you’re entitled to some of the money.
So like the pork one had to do with all the pork manufacturers allegedly fixing prices so we all had to pay more for pork. That harms us, the consumer, so when the pork producers got sued, we can submit a claim to get our portion of the settlement money.
I thought there was people that used towels for more than 1 use. I never have, it actually grosses me out thinking about it. It was actually our son that saw on Discovery channel when he was little and they showed all the dead skin cells , . .also I use to work for 40 years in a Nursing home. I guess I’d rather do laundry, I have enough towels. So I don’t have to re use the “dirty” ones. If it’s been used once it’s considered dirty. Sorry.

If you rub your dry you will get lots of skin cells, think exfoliating. But if you pat dry, very little.

In hot weather, I would freeze water to put in my outside rabbit cage she could lay on or around. She loved it. In hot times in Africa they do this to keep male rabbits testicles producing sperm. Rabbits in Africa are mostly raised for their urine and poop. Both are used for fertilizing gardens/farms.
