Maynard said he moved from front stage for a number of reasons including he felt he wasn't the star of the band and one of the main benefits is he gets to watch Danny Carey the whole show.

Maynard is a BJJ black belt, he owns and operates a beautiful vineyard and winery in Arizona and has THREE amazing bands, he's a juggernaut plain and simple!

……in the Philadelphia 1992 (J.C.Dobbs) video of their Opiate ep concert, Maynard sings 7-8 songs on a small stage for about 20 people…..no lie, he didn’t blink not even 1 time through out the show. Check it out !

Saw them with my husband in Fresno last night , for the 7th time. Fucking phenomenal. I'm so sad it's over! Me and my husband both cried. Though their shows are not like this anymore, with Maynard front and center , they are one of the only bands that can back their masterpieces up live. 🔥🌀

I've seen them live twice. One time Maynard was wearing a D.E.A. jacket with aviator sunglasses and a cowboy hat, walking around the stage a lot. The other time, he was wearing a full bodysuit that shows the muscular/cardiovascular systems, and he stood on a riser at the back of the stage (drums and bass were front stage, guitar and vocals were on risers behind them). You should check out the footage from Philadelphia in 1992, it's in a small bar with only like 15 people. 🤘

Maynard famously suffers from stage fright. I think it's more that he is focusing on something benign in order to keep himself from being acutely aware of the audience, rather than something intriguing in the crowd. I saw Tool live about a week ago, and he spends the entire show on risers next to the drums in very dark shadow. He only came out front after the show was over to bow to the audience in thanks.

That is completely understandable! If i had to sing on stage I would probably adopt a similar approach to that, stay back and let the band have the spotlight 😊

Checkout "Jerk Off" from their Opiate EP. Came out the year before this performance. It's also a live performance on the EP.

as perfect as this performance was the missing "JESUS WON'T YOU FUCKING WHISTLE" just hurts lol. i wonder why he skipped that in the live performance. did he just forget the lyrics? theres no way he tried to censor it. no way at all. Maynard wouldn't dare censor it lol

Maynard has stage fright, (or at least did, one of the reasons he sits in the back now) his way of dealing w/ it was to just stare into the crowd. I image he's just found some bright shirt or hat and hasn't looked away.
You should check out the original version of Push It, then check out the live version from the Salival album. Great reaction sir.

13th Step A Perfect Circle album is where he gets all his observations on addiction out. Maynard is a well put together dude, who has managed to avoid the many substance related pitfalls of being a rock celebrity has to offer.

I love Adam playing guitar like Cousin It the whole time! Lyrics in this song are heavy. You'll get it after a few 100 times listening. Or less. 😄

He isn’t staring - he is centering his stage fright by focusing on one thing

Early Tool isn't as progressive. In fact there was a portion of Tool fans that didn't necessarily like the progressive move they made away from raw, angry, "standard" rock. These people really pissed the band off and it's part of the cannon, I guess. Checkout "Part of Me" that's off their EP Opiate and very raw but good young Tool sound.
