    Hey papa pepper, am from India and am helping a group of my 8th grade students to do this project. We are upgrading this though using metal rods to hold the drum in position. Also we will be powering the circular motion using a chain set attached to a stationary bicycle. This is to design it in a such a way as to cycle for exercise, wash and dry clothes and also use the rotation to generate power to convert it to electricity to charge or light up some electricals.

    Great design. When we lived in the Alaskan bush we had wash day once a month. We used giant garbage cans and a broom stick. The clothes were spot treated, then went in the garbage can, then you start agitating. This was the same water that had been used for baths that morning. It already had soap in it from washing us. Fresh water with vinegar was in a second can and that was the rinse.
    People can judge, but most people will never know how difficult it is to hand pump water that much water and heat it up on a wood stove. This was incredible work.
    This system looks a lot less dramatic. I'd go for two - one for wash and one for rinse - so multiple loads could use the same water. Wastes less products. Love it.

    IDEA: Have you considered making the outside barrel stainless steel and building a rocket stove or maybe two, for even heat distribution, underneath? Be able to wash in warm water, and then tumble dry in the same machine assuming you could devise a small vent that would let out the moisture during the dry cycle but not too much water during the wash cycle.
    Yeah the addition of a stainless barrel would increase the costs but it isn't like it wouldn't last forever.

    I was just wondering, if the power is down, how are you able to use a hose? I remember my Grandma using a tub and washboard for Grandpa's work clothes and even my Mum used a wringer-washer with seperated rinse tubs about 70 years ago until my folks bought a more modern "automatic" washer. A washboard/tub saves huge amounts on soap, too! You just keep using the same wash water until you deem it time to change it. Same for the rinse water. Then, off to the clothesline with clothespins. The sun and wind will dry them, but also solar-disinfect and deodorize as well. Cheers.

    This is nifty, but when you get tired of hand cranking your washing and finally go out and buy an electric machine, you could turn that thing into a barbecue, maybe???

    how well does it actually clean clothes?

    • @Nellyontheland
      @Nellyontheland 4 года назад +3

      Hi! Same way any washing machine will. The fins, or in this case the bars, gently hold back cloth thence 'slopping' and allowing it to fall back into the water thus agitating the soiled cloth to be knocked off of the cloth to be held by the soap in suspension until it's dumped and rinsed out.
      Like ones home washer.
      Cheers.
