If you're new here, welcome to my channel. I live in Scotland and this channel documents my adventures and life as an artist in the Highlands. My life goal is to hike around the entire coast of Scotland (and islands) with my sketchbook and cameras, a project I'm calling Sketching Scotland. Most importantly I'm making an effort to learn about the history and important features of each area I visit. I love sharing what I learn with you all. Thanks for being here!

The fear and trepidation in your face at the approaching storm was palpable. Still, got to the pod OK and we got a happy ending. Who can help but wonder at the magnificence of birds? One of the highlights of vet school was learning about the amazing physiology of birds. They are the only animals that deliver oxygen to the lungs on both inspiration and expiration. Just magical.

I'm glad that I saved this video till I had time to sit back and watch it properly (after dinner, with the main lights off and a cup of tea to hand!) I try to do that always for S-in-S videos, but it can be tempting to rush the treat! -Sara- Sarah (sorry, unintentional typo & edited to correct!), *many thanks for this* - even the scare with you standing out in the open, holding your bike and an umbrella with a metal rod! Please, will you do some research about biking and thunderstorms? I found a couple of official websites (eg national biking clubs) which cover it sensibly. And maybe get a '"biking poncho"? I was wondering why you don't have one. (I've read and replied to that comment.)
I liked the suggestion of an E-bike adaption, too - I didn't know they were available, and it sounds a great idea!
Like so many others commenting here, I love the look of those camping pods. Not so sure about the showers and toilets, though, or only having a microwave and kettle to prepare a hot meal.
I really caught my breath at the gannet taking off - absolutely breathtakingly magnificent!!!! *WOW!!!!!*

For the storm: I was told that when you are exposed it's better to turn off mobile phones because they are constantly trying to connect to the network and that can be dangerous when lightning can hit you. ⛈
I was surprised you didn't have a biking raincoat with you. They are very useful, when not used they are like a small pillow and good for many other things, but when you need them you can cover your whole body, your arms and head and partially the bike too. If you have leg cover, even in heavy rain you can stay totally dry. The only disadvantage is that of course humidity stays under the coat, but that's less wet than the rain. 😁

If it rains, the fishing brolly (48", so not able to use it where don't have the car!!!) does a pretty good job, but not if it's windy. The 'poncho' covers me and the chair and I can push the art stuff under it, too, if it won't be dry enough at the back of the brolly. If I don't have that one with me (it's heavy to carry!!!!), I, chair (or stool) and my kit, are pretty much covered up by the cape., anyway. So yes, I, too, was wondering why you don't have one.

Just a piece of wisdom I learned some time ago: *We can pack a bag, leave almost everything behind us, but the one thing that we can't leave behind is me, myself, / you, yourself, the product of my / your past and present.*
Our future will only change for the better if we are willing to make changes in ourselves, where we are now. Otherwise we will be exchanging a familiar environment, which has a lot going for it, for somewhere where no-one knows us and no-one cares, unless we are prepared to put in a lot of groundwork ourselves, and are prepared for how tough it will be.
What right have I to share this? I made my move to France, eyes wide open, having worked here when I was younger, having those words of wisdom and my own life experience to help me (thank you to the special friend who passed it on to me!!!) and it has not been easy. _Nor is it easy for anyone,_ however idyllic they may make it seem when they talk about it. and one, two, three visits are not long enough to make this sort of decision.
Before you decide, make time to make a long stay (three months minimum) in RealLife circumstances. Rent somewhere and behave like you do at home. Everyday stuff like shopping, cooking, cleaning, housework, and all the other things which make up everyday life.)
Find out all you need to do to become resident. Talk to people who have made the move about their experience, what hoops they have had to jump through, what mountains they had to climb, to be allowed to stay, and get visas, do seriously tough exams (such as Sarah has just done to get her visa renewed), tax, housing, health, bank accounts, a work permit, and all the rest of those pesky hurdles - and ask them to be honest!
Right now, the UK is putting massive obstacles in the way of legal immigration - especially the one about money in the bank to support yourself and qualifications for jobs (which go to a a UK candidate, if there's one applying, first, btw.) And right now, the UK is in a very bad way, economically. Forecasts suggest this is a long-term problem, largely due to Brexit, then Covid, and then the war in Ukraine (which is affecting economies world-wide, but the UK was already in a mess before Covid, and before the war.). (Sarah was getting married, but the paper work took months, and even then they had to bring the wedding forward to meet te criteria!),
Notice that Sarah doesn't say, "Hope you make it to live here soon.', but "I hope you get to visit. ".
So do your homework. Look for the problems, not just at the idyll. Sarah had Wolfie, but all her family are back in the US. She's talked about the activities she did, about being surrounded by people, which aren't available where she is now. She's had to cope with culture shock, a different language (US English is _not_ the same as UK English and definitely not Scottish, Welsh or Irish English!), missing familiar food, familiar brands we take for granted till they aren't there, familiar people, familiar places...
And if, in the end, a year or so down the line (it can take that long to do your homework properly, and get all the necessary stuff organised (moving across the ocean is an expensive business, but bring familiar things, and furniture with you. *You'll need those anchors!!!*), you decide you're moving to Scotland anyway, print this out and bring it with you for when it gets tough. It'll help you to know that you aren't alone! 🤗
