Did two or three flights out there years ago before big landing fees while the runway was rough. Really unique perspective both landing and take off are spectacular..........did a left turn and around the island and it really is unforgettable the harbor and casino..........bucket list for sure............
Beautiful airplane. I think the fact that OCR didn't do the instrumrnt conversion is a bonus to the potential buyer. Sure its nice to have the glass panel and the capability that the new avionics bring, but the nostalgics amoung us just love things left as they should be. Another awesome video. Thanks crew,
I remember flying in for the first time in the early 70s and seeing more than a few airplanes missing landing gear. It can be challenging especially with low visibility.
Was going to fly there today from F70, but the weather was overcasty. I’m a VFR Pilot. But will definitely be going this fall. Thx for sharing 😃🤙🏻 edit: yea my flight club: Pacific Coast Flyers, requires a check ride to KAVX. And yea that 2.1% upslope on 22 definitely affects your flare to landing.
It was one of the best parts of my trip from Australia doing the trip out to Catalina Island. Couldn’t thank Rich enough for his hospitality and the experience.
Thank you for the memories. I was checked out for landing at Catalina when I was working on my private license in 1972 out of Eagle Aviation. I was instructed to make my final approach at 45 degrees to the runway as strong downdrafts were always a possibility there and it would be easier to terminate my approach. I believe the jet crash is accurate. In the 80's, one of my customers came in with a broken arm and said he crashed a rented jet at Catalina.
About 30 years ago, I replaced the engine in an A36 at the tie-downs there. Not an easy feat getting everything on and off the island and working out on that ramp.
Agreed! and when you make your next trip to Bakersfield meadows field let me know as ill come watch you land!, as i live there now. have a great Labor Day weekend!
True story on the jet. Demo flight from Santa Barbara, if I remember correctly and the accident occurred as you described. I have flown in and out of there a few times over the years. It always gets my attention.
Of course now I'm jonsen for a 'buffalo burger'! LOL I remember this little 33 from the last video. The gear has that short bent in looking stance like a Baron, but blows out and comes in like a military fighter jet, fast. The 66 just takes its time. LOL That drop off looks interesting. If you did go off the end, wonder if you could gain enough nose-down/low to pull up and out of it? I would never want to test that theory though!! LOL Thanks guys, enjoyed that one. --gary
As I began flying in 1974, I appreciate the new avionics that have swept the GA market but the costs in the short term are in many cases equal to the price of the aircraft.😩 I prefer the steam gauges to flat screens but open to Garmin’s line of hybrid round gauges. Your choice to let the buyer choose is a wise one. Much like residential developers who decide to add a pool to a property supposedly to promote a quicker sale. Only to find that many buyers don't want a pool for a number of personal reasons or they did but didn't like the design the developer chose. Why keep an aircraft out of the market while converting to a system many don't want⁉️😩 Wise move. A new buyer might be thrilled with a panel they feel the most comfortable with. There are buyers wishing to buy a non-converted aircraft with the full intention of doing so right away. Double the possible customers. In conclusion, I have to say that when you take off, you track the centre line all the way. Upon landing, you also track that centre-line like you’re on a rail‼️😁 I'm noticing this fact in comparison to all the other RUclips's out there who don’t⁉️😩😳 Good on ya‼️😊
Thanks for the review. I'm getting into the aviation world and fun watching your videos. Seem like this is a great contender, looks roomy too (bigger than the Mooney. Been looking at a Piper 6/300 and a A36. This one may be a good smaller alternative.
San Pedro native here...visited the cafe there dozens of times in the 80s...in Jan of '84 the Lear overshot the runway..i was a student at Southwest Skyways at KTOA then...after the FAA got done and the airport was open we flew over to check it out...there was a Piper Cherokee from Peninsula Aviation (KTOA) with the wings off and loaded on a flat bed trailer for quite awhile that had run off the end about a year earlier the buffalo are descendants of some that were barged over in the 1920s for a movie shoot and were left there rather than spend the money to take them back to the mainland ... back in the 80s if i recall the landing fee ($10 ?)was waived if you dined at the restaurant or went into town ..in any event there was a 5 dollar over night tie down fee when we stayed at my uncles condo in Avalon
I just had a discovery flight out in riverside. Your in socal aswell I just wanna hang out and be around what you do and learrrnnnn. This is so dope!!!
Heck…I wouldn’t do anything to the avionics in this Bonanza. This airplane is equipped with a straightforward traditional instrument panel, excellent reliable King radios, and supplemental gauges. Honestly I feel that round-dial gauges and instruments are more intuitive to read, process, and interpret vs. digital flight instruments that your brain has to process and interpret.
Flew for years with no engine monitors and I don’t recall it being a major issue. We see just as many cylinder issues now with all the fancy monitoring. This airplane will end up with one soon!
Hey Rich, another nice film, thanks. First went to Catalina in ‘92. By the way, I think they’re technically Bison, the story goes the original herd came from a movie made in Hollywood decades ago. I like your take on single engine piston values, as a 1965 Comanche owner I hope you’re right. Based on your market confidence, if I pay your full asking price for that lovely analogue Bonanza, you’d buy it back from me in three years for the same figure right ….!? 😊 Keep up the good work.
In 1987 my wife and I watched a Falcon 50 land on 22 and make the mid-field turnoff to the ramp. Only two aboard, must have been light on fuel as well. Same day, the airport was visited by two - that's two - PBY's. Great airport for burgers and plane spotting.
The a amount of time I spend out of gliding distance from the beach is minimal. Losing an engine over LA county is much more risk to me than over the ocean close to land.
I didn’t know Ford Motor Co and General Motors made electric engines back in the early 1900’s - surely that’s why they chose “motor” in their company name?
As a NorCal pilot, Catalina is on my bucket list once I finish up my IFR. Thanks for the ride!
Thanks for watching!
The bonanza gear on a 28v system are fast! Blink and you’ll miss it! Love my S-35!
That is exactly the type of panel I am accustomed to. Nice plane. This trip also took care of my hunger😀

Nice. I went out there Tuesday for lunch. It was hot! Cool to see the Plus one chicken hawk there.
I think we were there on Tuesday as well.

Interesting history - such a great place!
Whew! Back to 4k. What a relief.
The visual perspective on landing reminds me of Sedona. I know there wasn't much wind on this trip, but you can tell that Bonanza is solid as a rock.
Very solid - Catalina runway is a lot better now!
About 30 years ago, I replaced the engine in an A36 at the tie-downs there. Not an easy feat getting everything on and off the island and working out on that ramp.
Sounds like a tough place for an engine change - nice views though!

i got my private at General Aviation at Fullerton Airport in 1979-80 and heard the exact same story about the jet. So it has to be true, right. lol.
Probably some truth to it - I need to check it out for sure.
True story on the jet. Demo flight from Santa Barbara, if I remember correctly and the accident occurred as you described. I have flown in and out of there a few times over the years. It always gets my attention.
It’s definitely a factor if you have not experienced it. Thanks for watching!
Rich, I always enjoy your post. I will be home for Thanksgiving, and I am interested in doing the ME1 program. I emailed you with some questions.
How fast is it with the new engine?
We will do a fly- off with a Cirrus soon so we can see how fast!
@@FlyingwithRichwhat version of the Bonanza does not have the steering wheel built into the center section, meaning to separate steering wheels

You can definitely take off and descend.
Viva El Sueno
Very soon I want to fly in to KAVX and take a shuttle to the backside of the island and tent camp on the beach.
Highly recommended!
Try a Bison steak. The king.
You said it was fast,,,,so how fast? 👍
I would estimate it will do 185-190 KTS at 8,000 ft.
They flew over at 160 kias give or take camera angle.
If you are looking at AS indicator - that’s indicated airspeed. I’m referencing true airspeed at 185 - 190 KTS.
Sounds like you need to buy it.
We own it.
