  • It’s Part 2 of renovations on our vintage RV and while it’s been pretty stressful, I think we’re finally getting the hang of things! 😅😂 It might have taken us way longer than planned, but we managed to get most of the overhead cab (aka our future bedroom) framed out with beautiful, rot-free wood! Overall, we’re pretty proud of ourselves with how it’s turned out so far. 😍

For the exterior aluminum what you really want are rivets, not staples. Rivets can go through the existing holes while staples will make 2 new holes. Less holes are always better.

The front overhang window? Get some aluminum and cover that hole up! I wish I would have done that on mine! That window takes road debris and high wind and always leaked or broke. At some point, most Class C builders just stopped putting windows there! Cover it up and move on.....

You could just block off the front window, if you can find matching aluminum. It is a sleeping area so you don't need a window, but if you do go for a replacement window, to stop it leaking in the future make sure you seal it, seal it again and seal it one more time just to be sure. When you're driving that area gets all the weather thrown at it.

As with all things construction related, I project that you will spend nearly double what you expect on tools and supplies ($15 for a box of screws!?). One tip I've learned -- try to stick to the same type of fastener head; you don't want to be in there with 4 different screw types; those Spax you bought are the way to go!

The one thing that I probably would do differently is put a layer of bituthane roof sealant inside the bunk to create a watertight barrier and prevent future leaking before putting the wood frame on. Bituthane also helps dampen thermal bridging which will reduce the amount of heat loss/gain through the wood that is contacting the aluminum exterior.

You will find you do not need that U-shaped open area above your head’s. Just put some good foam rubber padding over it in case you bump your head and build it straight across. It makes it much easier when you want to sleep up there. How about things like the toilet does it work? How about the water system how’s the pump?. Guess you’ll get to them later!

I thought I was handy but there are some tools I won’t touch, like anything that can slice my arm off. You two are very handy even tho you say you aren’t! By the time you’re done, you’ll know every inch of that rig. Don’t get discouraged if things look overwhelming at first and just keep working on it when you can. Great video.

nice job kids, I gutted and am in the process of updating a 1978 Tioga II 16.6 Sportsman on a dodge B100 with a 318 engine
the front window is good, you don't need a new one, a drill with a wire wheel will clean the aluminum up nice and you can get the tint off with "Citristrip", it wont damage the glass and you can recaulk the window (watch videos with professionals doing it, it helps a lot)
get yourself a sliding T bevel if you need to figure out which angle to set your saw to rip or cut wood
an "eraser wheel" will remove any old silicone caulking like magic, i tried heat guns, stripper, goo gone and an eraser wheel make it 1000 times easier.
    good luck on the project
will follow along with your process

It may be too late but I suggest getting super dark tinted windows all around to help keep the inside a bit cooler
