Hey tommy, i ordort the same set-up a few weeks ago, and hope to have it quicly sended to belgium. You make good and very informative vids. Love to see projects done with the cnc grts Joris

Thank you very much 🙂 yes definitely more cnc videos coming. Good luck with your build
Thanks Tommy for your very well presented and informative review of the mafell I'm planning on getting a workbee after Christmas but my budget won't quite reach to the mafell at the start. I am going to check out your alternative recommendation of the @ooznest router head I think that might be perfect for me, I would love to see a review of it if possible. Lovely to see you back on youtube keep up the good work.

Thanks Thomas 🙂 delighted to hear your going to enter the world of cnc you won't be disappointed with the workbee. I think from the spec it's a great alternative and definitely better than the katsu.
Hi Tommy, good to see you back on YT again. Nice clear comparison of the 2 cutter options there with a bit of a tease about a future project thrown in as well. Glad to to see you looking well Sir, hope you and yours are all OK. In case you don't get back on here before the festive season hits I'll take this opportunity to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Great vid Tommy, I have to say I went straight in with my new ooznest cnc and purchased the mafell well worth doing it right the first time round if you budget allows it, I'm new to cnc and have done some nice items within Oak with great results using the mafell, hardly any sanding to do after, if you can afford the extra price go straight in and add this mafell to you build or upgrade. Cheers Tommy.

Thanks Mervyn 🙂, I totally agree if budget allows 👍
those katsu routers are great value for money, but man are they loud😄i had a kress spindle on my old cnc, identical to the mafell, very reliable, but my new machine has a water cooled spindle, its a beast, and quiet! , have fun with your machine tommy👍
5:04 It seems there are a few of suppliers for this type of spindle. They are based on hand tool motors, like angle grinders and die grinders, which are low duty, intermittent use. They are very noisy compared to a specific designed spindle motor. That is due to the fan system to keep the hand tool cool. These comments are based on my research, being my own opinion. Do your research.

Why do I need to do my research into your own opinion. I was comparing the milling motor to a router I wasn't comparing it to a Air cooled or water cooled vfd motors. I also didn't say they couldn't be sourced from another supplier just that ooznest the supplier or the cnc supplied them . So again why do I need to do my research
I must say I'm glad I went for the genuine Makita RT0700C rather than one of the knock-offs. I thought I would want to upgrade to a spindle but I have given the Makita 4 years of serious work including running it at minimum rpm (9600) for many hours continuously (said to be bad for it) and it is still fine. For plastics it would be good to be able to go slower but I find water-cooling the job works very well and gives a great finish on acrylic and HIPS sheet anyway.

That's great hopefully it will meet your needs for many years to come 👍
Hi, can you use collet chucks of any other size? Do you have any opinion about water or air cooled spindles? Thanks!
2 года назад+1
Hi, you can get collets from 3mm to 8mm aswell as 1/8"and 1/4". I don't have any experience of water or air cooler spindles buti think they may be unnecessary for a machine of this type
Glad I came across this video Tommy. Had my eye on this CNC for a while. I wonder does the enclosure help with the noise?
Год назад+1
You won't go wrong with this cnc. As for the enclosure yes it would reduce the cutting noise when using the machine however keep in mind depending on the type of extraction you use the extraction unit will probably make as much if not more noise than the machine cutting
I hope oozy send you one of their new routers too, so you can test that. Tell me do you know if you can fit a spindel as oppose to a router? Look at shapeono cnc machines who have that option too, they are even quieter than your router and most importantly, controllable remotely; so the software switches them on and off and can set the speed too.

I believe it possible to get the mounts for a spindle (air or water-cooled motor with a vfd) but for me I don't think it worth the hassle on a hobbyist machine. If controlling via the software was a priority you can get a maffell milling motor with amd controls so speeds on on/off is controlled by the software its just not sold by ooznest.
Thanks for the Video, really informative. decided to upgrade aswell! just been testing it today. wanted to get your advise on speeds/feed rate. Cutting some plywood with a 1/4 spiral bit. Speed dial is on 4 and cutting at 30mm/sec. It cuts fine but screeches/whines like crazy. What speeds do you normally find works well?
Год назад
Hi thanks for your message, your settings seem to be in the right ballpark. Can I ask what depth of cut your are using? With a 1/4 bit it should be around 3mm. The screeching you are getting is from the vibration in the bit itself and plywood and hardwoods normally generate more resistance hence more vibration when cutting. Try not to have the bit extent too far out of the collet this will reduce the effect you are getting also.
@ thanks for the reply. I'm only cutting 2mm. I think I figured out what it might be though. The Y axis is twisting. the right and left stepper motors are moving at different speeds. It just twisted mid job and jammed the whole Y axis. scared the life out of me, thought it was all about to explode
Год назад
@@motamwoodworks that's not good iv never had any issues like that. I was only thinking after I replied I should have suggested checking the wheels were adjusted properly especially on the z axis as that would also create a vibration
I'm thinking about having this in my semi detached house with an enclosure, do you think the noise with the mafell would be too intrusive?
2 года назад+1
The mafell is going to have less noise definitely. As for being intrusive I think the noise of the bits doing the actual cutting will be the most intrusive when it comes to the machine and also the noise of some type of extraction system to clear the dust. But choosing the mafell and enclosure is definitely going to help noise reduction
Just out of curiosity, how tight did you have to make the clamp before the milling motor was secure? I got to the point with mine where I thought I'd strip the thread before it started to clamp the motor, so I had to use a single thickness of masking tape around the motor's housing before it would tighten up properly.
2 года назад+1
Hi, it took very little to tighten I'd say half a turn on the bolt and it was good. As you possibly could see when I placed bracket on the motor it was a smooth fit (within 0.05mm) with no extreme excess movement. I don't think you should need to add tape as this could lead to tramming issues.
@ Hmm, I really struggled to tighten this without the tape - it really wouldn't do it. Using the tape it was as I'd expect - a little pinch and Bob's your uncle. Good luck with the new milling motor!
Anyone on here have any experience of the Workbee Router Head? I'm wondering how it compares to the Mafell FM 1000.
2 года назад+1
Hi Nick, I'm not sure how many will see your comment however as I said in the video I don't have hands on experience of the workbee router head I had only seen the specs. I don't think it could compared with the mafell if your budget will allow you to get the mafell get it. I believe that the workbee router head should really only be compared to trim router options like the katsu etc. It would be a far better option to a standard trim router due to some of its features and collets. I hope this is useful.
Well come back Tommy good to see you .
Thanks Joe 🙂

Thanks John 🙂

top of the morning to you!
Nice video, you should comment that the most noise from the Mafell is the cutter into the material and not the motor noise itself
