Another EXCELLENT thorough yet concise review! I think you covered all the important points. And you are correct, the standard distance for scientific Sound pressure levels are always taken at a distance of 1 meter from the source. But scientific measurements are taken in an anechoic chamber. That prevents the ROOM from amplifying certain portions of the audio spectrum. The fact that this tool performed so quietly with the mic so close and sitting directly on the same surface as the tool is even MORE impressive! Typically, we must physically isolate the microphone from the source. And that MDF surface acts like a guitar-top to amplify vibrations. So, although you might not have used expensive strict metrology here, you made a VERY convincing demonstration of the motor's smooth quiet operation. The other variable in sound metrology is the "scale." Consumer based products are measured with "Weighted scales" that intentionally skew measurements. That is done for the benefit of loudspeaker manufacturers who intentionally "fluff up" their numbers for marketing purposes. It's a similar scam to how tool manufacturers use inflated "peak horsepower" ratings to dupe less-knowledgeable consumers. Overall, I think your review with reasonable caveats is splendid, and even as an acoustic engineer, I cannot fault the tool review in any way. I wish ALL tool reviews were this well presented.
Thank you g. Quiet and smooth running is generally a sign of a well put together tool so thought it worth taking a bit of time to look at. Glad you appreciated the review. To be fair, my earlier reviews of tools and accessories are awful. I'm very much learning on the job with regards RUclips. All the best.
Thank you for sharing this video. Just wow I know it's o ly sound but nowadays people look for quieter tools but still pack a punch.. My bosch professional router is loud.. The maffel products are wonderful
Thanks. Yeh, I have a Bosch GMF 1600 which I thought was quiet but this Mafell is next level. Runs smooth and cool. Of course, the router bits themselves can still be noisy when cutting!
Cheers. Yeah, I looked at AMB myself as they offer a little more power. For cnc's the WS quick tool change version of the Mafell along with the PV option for accurate speed control seems a great package. Don't think you'll find any Magellan viz Ooznest. They're much more for profiles and fixtures for small self builds or their own WorkBee cnc.
It seems that the old Bosch plunge router base is the only one in existence. I have replaced the Bosch router motor with a Kress 1050 FME-1 (looks very similar to the Mafell, the collets look very similar as well, but the Kress sounds quieter) a long time ago. But now the plunge base has worn out so I'd like to have a new one. I have been looking for a replacement for quite some time, but can't find anything decent (and at a price that's not almost the same as the motor).
The plunge base for the Trend T4 trim routers can be bought separately and have a 43mm collar. Only issue is they have a proprietary clip to lock the motor in place, not a locking knob like on the Bosch. I'm sure you could just drill and tap the base for a knob to fix another brand motor in place.
I'm looking at the new ooznest cnc now and it has the mafell as one of the options which in turn led me here to your video review 😊 good review and thinking I'll be going with the mafell even though the katsu routers are very good, maybe buy one of those as a spare
Hi Tom. The Mafell is a very smooth, quiet and capable motor. I have it permanently mounted to my sled/template router (A kind of manual cnc in appearance). There's some good motor options from mafell too via the speed controller and quick release tool holder options. Good trusted brand.👍
Cheers Peter. Did a vid on the connectors. Links are in that vids description bud.👍 ruclips.net/video/jnQPcGuLKzk/видео.html Edit: I've also added the links in this videos description too.
Nice video. I wonder how the FM1000 AND KF1000 Differ? Same motor and body but can the offset trim base be interchanged for the Bosch bases you fitted? I'm thinking of using one of these to cut out rebates to retrofit heritage glass in timber windows so all freehand work. Not enough mafell videos out there so thanks for this. 👍
Cheers. Yeah, the FM and KF's both have the same 43mm collar. Don't know if there's an electronic difference - speeds, torque etc - but I imagine it's the same as they're both routers at the end of the day. The KF has a a lever to lock on/off it's trim base so you could easily remove it and use the motor on a cnc or, on one of the old bosch bases. I remember on one of the Mafell groups a rep said they'd make the KF base available for people with an FM but, doesn't seem to have happened. And yeah, I'd like to see more Mafell vids. I'd like to do more myself but, it's costly kit. Unless I genuinely need it, i cant afford to just buy it for a review - unfortunately!
Hi, could you tell me about your milling table please? the milling motor sounds ideal for my needs but interested in whether you built the milling table yourself or is it made by a particular manufacturer? as a manual mill from what I can gather that would be perfect for me, just a larger version lol. Between this video and your P1CC video, you have influenced my decisions for the better. your demonstrations and reasoning, opinions, etc are what we should hear from product owners reviewing and demonstrating tools, etc. Thank you so much from a new mafell owner, the DDF40 duo doweller system. I love that machine.
That's very kind, thank you ! I did a walkthrough of my machine (over-router?) a little while ago. I plan to do some sort of build plan for it when I get the time to strip it down for a service. Link to the video here: ruclips.net/video/pH54j7TR9O8/видео.htmlsi=UU7gvK68QU7vMpw_
Thanks for the review sir, really appreciated! I've been eyeing up one of these for my CNC for sometime but your review has given me the confidence to purchase it. I'm a big fan of Westcountry4wood ever since they were one of the first stockists of the DDF40 which I am in love with - Was it Simon you spoke to there and strong armed into ordering one in?
Yeah, Simon at Westcountry has been really helpful and not just with this. Only about 4 miles from me too which is great. I've honestly been really impressed with the milling motor bud. I'd certainly say you can buy with confidence. If you're going the cnc route, I'd consider the PV models. Although you still have to manually start the machine, you can use you cnc program to accurately control the motor speed.
Do you happen to know which router base would be compatible with the Mafell? So that it can be set up for edge routing. I don't think the base of your old Bosch will be still available? Thanks!
The old Bosch pof 500 A's often come up on eBay for around £30. Microfence are very nice and do a 43mm collar version I think. You'd have to import from US though and they cost £3-400! Pretty sure the Trend T4 base base a 43mm collar too. Base is still available new for about £30. www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Trend-Wp-T4-Base-5027654059913-T4-Base-Complete?gclid=CjwKCAjw7LX0BRBiEiwA__gNw5UXQN-ooVq245d0SCHe7tzFS-JD9VHo8czKT5EjJyAJGPM4lA49rhoC9_8QAvD_BwE
The bases are from an old Bosch POF 50 router/trimmer. Sometimes very similar models sold as POF 500 or 52. They all had a 43mm ("Euro ") collar, same as the Mafell, so their bases will fit.👍
I have been eyeing this motor - it is surprisingly one of the more affordable Mafell options in the US. How have you found it as trim router? Is it top heavy and tippy or does it handle OK? Thanks for the run down of the PV version - I wondered what the differences are. We can only get the 1000 non-PV or quick release versions here and for some reason with an odd-size collet.
It's not top heavy at all as a trim router tbh. All the weight is around the collar and motor body - the red bit. The black boot at the top just houses electronics. I can't remember but I think in the eu, they come with the 8mm collet as standard. You might find the 6.35mm (1/4") more useful. If you're friendly with your local store that stocks collets, might be worth trying one out on the Mafell nut. Nothing looks particularly proprietary about the collet or nut. If nothing fits, contact Timberwolf or see if you can import from the eu. It's not cheap compared to trim routers or standard milling motors but it is on its own in this class for low noise and vibration.👍
Haven't done it myself but pretty sure you take the black plastic cover off (cable end). Just a single screw to undo I think. The brushes should be located to the back of the motor, just above where the red body starts.
@@BischBaschBosch cheers. Just received one yesterday and noticed there's no screwports on the side like other routers. The user manual doesn't cover it, just says to send it to a Mafell service centre every 125-150 hours of use!
@@koswix I haven't logged my hours. Probably easier to do if it's the motor for a cnc. The programs log hrs. I think servicing every 150hrs is mainly for cnc users at a guess. Longer running generally. I might look into whether a service can be done under the warranty.
@@BischBaschBosch Mine's for a CNC, and 125nhoirs doesn't sound like very long to me. Definitely can't be sending it off somewhere to have brushes replaced that often 😬
