Milahud had already written for viola, and especially the summer concertino for viola and chamber orchestra. Milhaud was a very hard worker, but he waited up to 1944 to write this sonata for the medium range of the alto which gives some nostalgy to these themes dating back to the XVIII° century.
Milhaud was a violonist. No doubt he loved putting the peculiar sonority of the alto in the forefront. With 500 opus, Milhaud did not write only masterpieces, but this is one.
Lovely piece, and very beautiful playing. Thank you for posting this.
My introduction to Milhaud. Very nice. Thank you.
Nice piece! Milhaud plays warmly and nostalgically on 18th century music, rather like Stravinsky in the Pulcinella Suite.
Very interesting neo-baroque work.
