And now the floodplain south of Westhampnett and the A27 where the Bailey Bridges were, and which eventually saved the city from being inundated, has had new housing and industrial units built on it!
Very interesting to see this. I lived close to Westhampnett where the river "overtopped" as it has in the past and will do again. All that area covered ni high density housing now.
Very interesting, thankypu for posting. I only just remember the floods, I was 7 years old at the time but I never saw Chichester (town) we lived in Bosham (a small village nearby) o do remember wading through the water with the other kids to go get supplys for our elders x
God safe Chichester , I cannot forget summer 1985 when I came to study English, I was 18 years old, still I have a beautiful memories in it and I am planning one day to come and visit Chichester.
Really amazing to see the place a drive into and out of daily in such a desperate way, I was only a teenager when this happened but being on the roads now for some years I have good memories of the 2000 floods and I think it was 2010/11 ? I maybe wrong. Hopefully it never gets to that situation again!
The land slopes overall North to South from 29 metres ASL at Lavant, down to 17 metres approx for the Westhampnett Road, down to 13 or 14 metres at the Bus Station, and 10 metres approx at the Southern By-Pass...the water is culverted beneath much of the City Centre, and threatening to tear out foundations....it was moving southwards and in fact was eventually diverted southwards across the A259 Chichester Road and the B2166 Pagham Road....or perhaps, sitting in the Bus Station, helping divert the buses, I was imagining the whole thing...
Thanks for posting this...doesn't seem like twenty years ago...sure sign I'm getting old!

Proud of my brother Derek Scott's efforts
I was at high school when this happened, and I remember it well
I remember this as a kid, mad times

Of course when I’m born there’s barely any snow
Good old Green Goddesses, their pumps saved the city.
They still continue to build 🤦🏻
Fires and floods, judgement day again for Chichester.
Chichester city is uphill from West Hampnett and uphill from The Hornet: water doesn't travel uphill!

I remember The Hornet being flooded to knee height.
Goddam the 90's sucked
It annoys me how they refer to chichester as a city. It's a bloody village.
It's a Cathedral city.
