That dessert is called orh ni, in Chinese dialect, and were normally served in Chinese banquets, but u can find it more commonly nowadays. It contains ginko nuts, which are actually sorta of a Chinese herbal ingredient and used in Chinese desserts a lot. Its texture is like a fruit, but has no taste, that is why it is found in sweet desserts. Normally it is cooked in pork lard, so it is great u found a vegan version. Actually, u can find vegetarian vegetable rice stalls in food courts in the malls, where the food are already mostly vegan, and where you just order rice and choose a few dishes to go with it, all served in one plate costs $3-5, that's what the local vegans do.
Cool video. I see you were only there for 48 hours but, big miss was not going to a Hawkers Market.
You would def need some research before hand, to find the vegan stahl’s but it’s so worth it and if you’re doing a price comparison at all it’s so cheap ! We don’t live there, but been to Singapore 6x over the last 15 years. When we are all allowed to travel again and if you go back check out Maxwell Hawkers and the vegan high tea at the Fullerton Bay hotel!
Totally! This was a crazy time as things were shutting down by the day due to covid...can't wait to go back and follow your tips and advice
yes, you have done well. nicely made video, very authentic and frank. absolutely enjoyed it. Thanks for making this vegan food video about Singapore.
So pleased you enjoyed it. We loved making it 💚
Loved this video felt like I’m there enjoying the vegan food with you 😂💕
The festival is called Thaipusam, dedicated to Lord Murugan. It takes months of mental and physical preparation to take part in the festival so you can't just jump in and take part in the procession. The structures they carry are called Kavadis. The reason behind the body piercing is to show endurance and willpower as part of their penance. Not all devotees get their body pierced, some carry smaller kavadis and pots of milk on their heads. Food is free in temples and during festivals because it's part of hindu hospitality culture. Hindus believe that even if your worst enemy shows up at your doorstep, you show empathy and practise hospitality.

Ah wow thanks for explaining! We have spent long periods of travelling india and there was so many festivals happening that we couldn't keep up
The mental and physical preparation is not easy and involves fasting and praying. They usually do it to purge clean their souls or when they wish for something for their families like health, from what I read before.
welcome Singapore, nice to know that u enjoy the food here
I love this video Janine. Very happy that you published it. You know me - I would love the donuts. The lamb curry looked good too. I would t mind trying the capsule room too - but only if I can go to Singapore
Thank you Ann. So pleased you liked it. Yes the capsuel was great but only for a couple of nights as there is not much room. It's a good way to save that little bit of money though. The Rendang curry was amazing. I occasionally think of it from time to time 🤣 I'm sure we will go back to Singapore as it's such a travel hub, and can't wait either we had a great time 💙xx
It made me laugh when the people thought you were part of the parade. Lol!
Hahaha so random
WOW! Another great Vegan food tour. That Vegan Rendang curry looks extremely good. 💚
Thank you, yes we still dream about that Rendang Curry 😋
Great that Vegan food UK managed to go to Singapore before the COVID 19 madness and it was good to see the vegan options for those who may plan to go there after the pandemic is over.
Thanks for watching David - keep you eyes peeled for more travelling fun
I'm a fellow Brit in Singapore now doing a visa run. I watched the video whilst I was at home but have forgotten the places. Any chance of adding a summary list in the comments or the video description please? I'd love to go and check out a few places. Been hitting hawker centers and it's been hit and miss for me. Trying to be vegan and sometimes failed as I forget to ask if a particular ingredient is included so certain dishes end up being vegetarian. Managed to do a whole day yesterday being vegan. Woo-hoo small wins. 😊
Great Chanel guys... well done... Are you guys updating happy cow as you go?
Thanks for sharing this with us, much vegan love from the Caribbean
So glad you enjoyed 😊
Welcome to Singapore! Great vegan options here :) Glad you guys made this vid. yeah the Thaipusam festival is very unique and OMG the MTR uncle hahahahaha. I go there all the time lol. What was the name of the last restaurant y'all checked out? Would love to check it out sometime.
The next time you visit, do check out wellsmoocht (hands down the best vegan eatery in the whole of SG). Check out vegan options/joints using abillionveg which I believe is more popular than happy cow over here!
FYI I went to dunkin last week and it appears the bavarian is no longer vegan.
2:41 "It's almost like we've been put in quarantine." Wow! Prophetic!
17.04 guess that should be potatoes 🍠 or pumpkin, that’s nice dessert when I was a teenager... thanks for sharing the video!
Merry Christmas guys. You could have spent an hour with that capsule pod of yours. From a Sci-Movie, it was great. Many East Indian foods you have are from South India. There is much from Northern India that you would also love. Cheers!
Looks absolutely amazing, I think I love to go there on a vegan food holiday!
Wait until you see what's coming in the next few days 😍
@@ThoseHappyDays Love your channel, can't wait!
Its crazy to see what it was like before covid. Hopefully one day it will be like it again. Merry Christmas to you both 😉
I know, little did we know then what was in store. Thank you for watching
@@ThoseHappyDays We are passed out on the sofa after our x-mas meal, and Prosecco 😁
Sweet, food looks good
Thank you, food was amazing 😊
Ginkgo nut is a fruit/seed and vaguely taste like a chestnut when roasted. It is common in asian cuisine from Chinese, to Japanese and Korean.
Thank you, yes Liam liked it... despite the topping 🤣
Should have visit hawker centres anywhere in singapore cheap delicious food all in one place u name it or Lau Pa Sat situated in the business district area just google it.
We stopped at Singapore on our way to New Zealand in feb 2020 and we went to the botanic gardens it was so hot but lovely and the food was good we wish we could of stayed longer we travelled onto New Zealand and arrived back in the UK 2 weeks before lockdown
You must try the „Eight Treasures“ in China Town !!!
Not sure if I missed it in the video or if it wasn't mentioned, but what was the name of the restaurant where you had the mutton rendang curry?
It's called Fo You Yuan Restaurant , 310 Lavender St . If you go enjoy 😊
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas 🤶xx
Hot soupy creamy desserts r traditional Chinese food originated from China. It’s nourishing for cold weather. Yam pudding w ginkgo biloba’s nut, is very caloric. Thanks for your video
Lots of vegan choices in the hawker centre, much cheaper and quality is pretty alright
We will go their next time, thanks for the heads up 😊
What's the name of the Chinese Vegetarian restaurant you guys patronised at the end of the video?
Its called For You Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant. Have a nice time if you go 😊
@@ThoseHappyDays thanks for replying. Happy New Year in advance 🥳🎆🎈
Check out the vegetarian festival in Thailand. Free vegan food!
😍
I love the capsule hotel
Did you go? Or would you ?
The Vegan Society has “The vegan passport” which you can buy or download. It would help massively when travelling as it states in words and pictures what vegans eat in dozens of languages. I used to treasure that little book when I was vegan years ago.
As a Singaporean vegan, I have to say that eating out as a vegan in Singapore is very difficult. Almost no one in Singapore understands the difference between "vegan" and "vegetarian", and vegan restaurants are sparse and usually really inconvenient to reach. Many a time, when you ask for vegan options, they will reply in local creole "simi si vaygan? vejitarien ah?"(what is vegan? is it vegetarian?) and this is a pretty discouraging sign. I would estimate the number of vegans in Singapore's population of 5-million, to be about 2000 to 3000, no larger than 5000 vegans.
At hawker centres, vegan options are usually bland and not nutritious, consisting only of vermicelli, vegetables, and wheat gluten "meat". Singapore has this "vegetarian mock meat culture" and it aint healthy. They almost never serve lentils or beans at vegetarian stalls in hawker centres, and almost all dishes at those stalls are smothered with eggs, dairy, and honey. The safest options are usually Indian food, and it is quite embarrassing to ask if they have ghee in each and every side dish.
And the icing on the cake? Apologist "pseudovegans". From my experiences, the majority of people in the Singaporean vegan community, are apologists who spend more time fixing and trying to silence unapologetic AF vegans like myself, than they spend on doing activism, not like they do activism at all since Singapore is the only developed country in the world where most people are anti-activist. I have had shyt thrown at me by apologist "vegans" simply for questioning the ethics and motives of lacto-ovo-vegetarians and for actively trying to dismantle speciesist hypocrisy within our local "animal lover" and "nature society" groups.
I have been here a year now and even though we have had lockdown I also feel there are very few choices for vegans. As you say I find it very hard to find out from people if stuff has dairy etc in mainly as I only speak English but even then most people just don't get veganism. I end up cooking my own great meals at home and then lamenting the choices when out and about. I thoroughly recommend the guys at Bosh on You Tube and love making my own veganised dishes of the food I used to eat before becoming vegan :)
I’m curious to know if specifically vegan eateries are more expensive because they are cashing in on the popularity of vegan food with tourists?
How did you find the pod? How much £ did it work out per night?
Ooo can't remember exactly, was a while ago now...found it on booking.com I think
@@ThoseHappyDays do you remember if you were able to leave luggage in there during the day?
@@ThoseHappyDays thanks, I found them, they’re really reasonably priced.
merry crimbo to you both
Merry Christmas 🎅xx
Hey you guys! I absolutely L O V E your channel and vibe! YES! I am a fully raw vegan traveller - and even though much of the food presented in your travel videos aren’t for me, I LOVE that it is vegan, compassionate and available! Yesssss. I grew up travelling SE Asia, I was chilling multiple afternoons at Ethos 3 years ago, and I love the information you are providing in your videos. Spot on and so useful! The last two days I have been binge watching your Asia Travel videos, feeling so uplifted and inspired! I hope I will see much more vegan travel footage from you! Lots of love from a World travelling dane currently in Greece ❤️ IG @annawacker
Placing my comment on all you ASIA travel videos to support you! And I truly mean every word :) Much love!
I agree that “pudding” looks nasty.
Well Singapore has the second highest GDP per capita in the world, 50% higher than the UK so you can't expect it to be cheap. You should actually expect it to be more expensive than the UK, along with most of East Asia.
