    Accents are a small piece of the bigger problem for Americans. They're simply ignorant to most cultures and countries outside of the US. I could name a few places in the world most Americans couldn't point to on a map. But, it's also because they are unquestionably the leaders in crafting pop culture and media, so it's like a kid being born rich not understanding or being as empathetic towards a poor one. Not completely their fault. The rest of the world however has been brought up to understand US culture as it's all we see in movies, music, and media. We don't have to work as hard to get them because we're force fed the American way of life. That being said I'm sorry to say, many Americans are simply not as intelligent as most of the worlds population (blame your government) which breeds an innate ignorance that translates to the rest of the world as 'Team America, fuck yeah!!' And many Americans unfortunately do nothing to disprove this notion.

      Its a regional thing tho.. Its like saying all britons are dumb cokneys or chav liverpoolians.
      California,NYC and the Pacific North West are Americas best states and most educated and altough we weren't accepting of Grime, Dizzy Rascal was getting play here in LA in the early 2000s.
      Yes most of the US does compromise of Conservative trailer park Chavs..
      Texas,Gerogia,Florida, the southern regions are all ignorant.

      Another brilliant example of the type of people I described when talking about Americans less intelligent. I already volunteered that the US undoubtedly leads the world in entertainment, I don't know why you're arguing a point that we technically agree on. Now here's the but, and it's a big one. Freedom? America? Really? Out of interest how old are you?

    I think average American Hip Hop knuckleheads just aren't very open minded. I was born and raised in the US and I've always loved Grime and can understand their rappers well. Always just looked at it like it was something different and I get to learn a little something about the game overseas over some futuristic sounding beats

      +Riak is my hero . I didn't say all, don't take it personally. I've heard many Europeans and Australians say that. Google it, compared to other countries the Americans really don't travel that much. Apparently it's more than had of Americans don't have passports, they are well know for not being well travelled people. An American said to my Australian friend when she was out there "you speak great English for an Australian" the American didn't even realise she spoke English as her first language, no joke!

    • @jamesjajohn3149

    British Grime and Hip Hop artists need to stop trying to "break into America" and just focus on putting out good music and building an audience where there at. If the music is good you get more listeners across the globe look how K-Pop has so popular over the years.

    • @messibo
      @messibo 8 лет назад +12

      I'm black british. That is never going to happen unfortunately, the only way for UK grime/hip hop artists to get global is to head to the states. Actors alike. Also about K-Pop we are talking Apples and Oranges here

    • @tevbuff
      @tevbuff 8 лет назад +1

      Actors I can understand but when it comes to music I don't think so. Why do we need to go to the US to get a global audience?

    I think the problem is because americans are raised in a country akin to korea whereby they believe they are the only country that matters. Far from cultured or diverse. Sold a dream via the media by way of conditioning. They feel insecure by the thought of new things and act aggressively if you try introduce them to something new. They live only to recognise other cultures by stereotypes and are generally very narrow minded. Its not their fault, they were conditioned since birth by corporate america to be this way, i feel sorry for them. Now they're going to have donald trump as president too, there is no hope

    • @Socratessz
      @Socratessz 8 лет назад +10

      'The land of the free' is ironic when they live in a police state where cops shoot innocent people monthly. Statistics show that most of them are obese and they are suffering due to excessive consumerism. The hoods/ projects are jails whereby they just kill eachother. They need to travel the world then have an opinion

      Have you been to America? Or are you just going off what you hear and read on social media? Are place is the most diverse in the whole world I can literally walk for a couple minutes and be on a street where's there's mostly Asian and Chinese population my college is literally 35% foreign exchange students but hey where not cultured or diverse enough lmao you talk about us being insecure and sold a dream but it looks like someone has been feeding you pretty jealous things about America I'm sorry you can't enjoy this wonderful country because your too scared of our cops shooting you lmao good cop out.

    European hip hop for the longest have taken to The US deep underground scene. The most basic elements of backpack etc. We haven't really seen it evolve. Most of it melding with electronic music. Didn't really fit into the American scene, especially during the reign of the South. Not until US hip hop stopped working about which region you were from and trading sounds, we started to tearing down boarders did Canada stand a chance at being more mainstream in hip hop via Drake. UK might get its turn but I doubt mainstream. Skepta is ringing in the streets with some people. Dizzy been making his way through the underground but I just think there is a language barrier a bit more advanced that a Guy Ritchie movie.

Most of us would choose a US artist over a UK artist any day. And grime culture hasn't swept the nation - a lot us choose NOT to listen to grime but people here aren't being honest about that.
      There are so many US underground rappers that won't ever attain "Drake status" - why do UK artists deserve status in the states?

    sick interview. I will say this though, they're trying to figure out why uk grime artists/rap artists haven't blown up like drake and i think the answer is obvious?? drake is more of an rnb artist, his music appeals to a much wider audience because its more inviting to more demographics. grime is just more underground and imo you have to have a real ear and passion for rap to understand the grime scene. i guarantee you will find people who dislike rap but like artists like drake, it wouldn't be the same the other way round innit

    At the time. When Drake came into the game. He was under Lil Wayne who at the time was "The Best Rapper Alive". That allowed Drake to get on tracks with other people that got his name around and he also had big radio hits. And now that the Young Money thing is done Drake stays big by 1. Hopping on every new artist that's popping. 2. Expanding his projects. (Deals with sprite, Endorsing the Raptors, beefing with Meek, and all the drama he has when it comes to the girls he's with like [Rihanna and Serena Williams] Drake is staying relevant. And he has also brought a new wave of artist from Toronto. At the end of the day its about business and businesses strive off of the connections you've made.

    Huge MF DOOM fan, I got onto some UK rap. I think the problem isn't the accent because I loved 4 Owls ft Premier, I think the issue is UK often sounds like it's behind the game. At times it sounds like an emulation of 90's culture. Honestly I think it will be insanely difficult for a UK rapper to match the global appeal of an American rapper due to people thinking the authenticity of the music and culture comes from NY, or Dirty South or West Coast. But if someone were to just do commercial pop music like Drake, that could be the difference

    • @singingchef23
      @singingchef23 8 лет назад +1

      Yes but at the same time, He has a formula that works. His lyricism and complexity has found a broad audience. No hes not in Drake's lane, but his lane is dope enough. Hes not emulating or mimicking a genre. Thats kind of how UK rap sounds, like they are mimicking. That said, that "Dont Waste My Time" LITTTT!! 4 Owls, Bishop Nehruvian DOOM, ive heard some really good stuff. The accent and slang barrier also slows the progression into the North American Market.

    The thing is UK grime is as spiritually/ musically as akin to a black version of UK punk as it is hip hop. It's often pretty unsophisticated, demo -like stuff with rapping skills that often have limited variation / patterns within the grime rhythm patterns.
    Frankly, it's going to take a genuine star WITH a musical advancement on the typical grime formula to really break through!

    UK Grime is not gonna break in America. To understand the scene you have to understand where it came from. It’s not hip hop, only inspired by it. US never caught on any of those genres that the scene grew out from, like UK garage, drum n bass, jungle etc so it’s too “alien” for them.

    • @stacksondeckldn4628
      @stacksondeckldn4628 4 года назад

      The music genre Grime is the predecessor to UK Drill, which has broken the states, only problem is, US rappers have taken the UK sound & tried to make it their own, packaging it as "Brooklyn Drill" to appeal to American audiences - which is funny cause this so-called "Brooklyn Drill" is just instrumentals made by UK Producers.

    I know I'm really late for this but what really bugs me about the comment section here is how many people are saying that Americans are really close minded (when it comes to music anyways, in a lot of other fields, we're definitely close minded). This is one of the most diverse countries in the world and we have a lot of everything from a musically standpoint. The biggest obstacle is from a regional standpoint IMO. I don't think it's fair to say that just because people from a certain region of the world don't like the music makes them close minded either. Maybe, just maybe, its not their thing at the moment. I might sound ignorant here, but jeez

    • @SWLEO123JED
      @SWLEO123JED 4 года назад

      Not liking something is fine, musical taste is subjective but what Americans tend to do is completely trash and disregard music because of an accent. They could have an amazing flow, lyricism, instrumental but them hearing a British accent is a complete turn off and they overlook everything else because of that. That is ignorance and being close minded. It's like if you sport clubs jersey/kit has been made by Nike for since the club was founded then they switched to Adidas and they now think it's trash because it's manufactured by a different company, completely ignoring all the artistic design because of a logo

    Y'all need to look up Shayler Franklin on SoundCloud, his writings dope and his delivery is that of an American, yet he is in fact English. He has a clearer accent though, so y'all should listen

    I like british rappers and all, big grime fan from the u.s., but the real draw of grime aint the rapping, its the beats, which are fire for the most part
