I change mine to individual every time as I have set it up for sports steering. I prefer the slightly extra weighting of the wheel and comfort for me is just too light. Off topic again slightly but `I have just learnt something this week given this is my first Mercedes and perhaps you can correct if wrong. Thank you so very much for this video, you are a life-saver. I was never aware of these modes until my Mercedes-Benz AMG returned from the Mercedes-Benz main dealer after some servicing, with a mysterious “S+” on the dashboard, that I’d never seen before. The Owners Manual and internet were never able to explain this, but your video was able to explain all the points. Question: It appears that I have always been running the Mercedes-Benz on “Comfort” mode. Which mode which is best for the overall health of the car, and will the “S+” mode cause any long-term stress or damage on the car? Thank you for your help. 😊
Thanks Simon! Glad you enjoyed it! I’d sadly a variety of all modes to use of the engine’s capabilities (driving in lower RPM’s in Eco and Higher ones in Sport etc). Those modes are so useful if you need to overtake someone or something though!
Thanks Nick for the reply, really appreciated! The video was really clear and easy to understand, with all the modes covered, and really helped as the information wasn’t covered in the manual, or anywhere else on the Internet. Hope you have a great weekend! 😊
Hi Nick, some little additions to the ECO Gliding that I have noticed. Maybe you can confirm? One you covered it in general by stating “… if no traffic… “ and in fact, the Gliding will only work when driving manually and if no vehicle is in a previously selected ‘spacing’ from the Distronic system. Further, if exiting from a speed controlled part of your drive with the cancel switch on the steering wheel, the gliding mode will not come automatically even if in ECO. You would need to tap momentarily on the gas pedal to reactivate gliding. On another note… when switching between ECO, COMFORT, SPORT etc, does the power output of the engine really change, or is it more the way the power is delivered that make us feel the engine has more or less HP?? (besides shifting and suspension characteristics) A certain rpm gives a certain power or? I seem to recall that with ECO selected, the car still has full power available for top speed, just need to push pedal somewhat further. Looking forward to next weeks episodes of these great videos. As non-native speaker, my apologies if I have misunderstood something. Cheers, Tom
Hey Tom, yes I think that’s right, I haven’t used Distronic for a long time but I’m sure that’s for all models where it’ll work only once the accelerator has been used and then your foot taken off. The different drive modes just control how responsive it is and quickly it’ll change through the gears. Technically speaking if you went to the kickdown in Eco, it would give you max power but would not change gear as quickly because you’re not in sport. Hope that makes sense 🤓
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Ah that depends on the spec, most don’t have adjustable suspension, but some might so just check with Mercedes if you’re not sure on the car you’re looking at. Hope that helps!
Only if you have a model that has adjustable suspension like AIRMATIC. It’s quite rare, but if you don’t then it’ll just do the gearbox, engine and steering weight for most models.
Hi Nick, thanks for another great video. I do have a question. Can you switch between the different drive mode while you’re moving down the highway? Or do you need to stop and then switch to a different mode and start driving again?
It can be more detailed in the first half of the video. Those you explained are almost self-explanatory as shown in the car screen. More info can be explained , Eg. What is the difference between esp on and off in sport and sport plus ? How does esp affect driving performance ?
Hey LCJ LCJ, don’t worry ESP is always on in all modes in most models. Most commonly it’ll be adjusted in AMG’s where it’ll usually switch off/ reduced in race modes. You can check on the screen, as you adjust Dynamic Select, it’ll show on the centre screen if it changes anything like that. ESP basically adjusts how much the wheels spin and it stands for Electronic Stability Control. In most cases you wouldn’t need to switch it off but it stops the wheels from spinning where there isn’t much traction.
Thank you for spending your time to educate us , especially, in the case of new owners of Mec Benz. I have a question to ask and that is, I used to feel lighter on the steering wheels when picked up my car but now I have changed the system so much that I lost track of having a lighter steering wheel. Could you please advice how can I go back to that mode. Thank you
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them! Well with Mercedes from what I’ve seen, cars will always default to their default mode called Comfort which has lighter steering. You can change it once it’s started usually via a Sport mode button or Dynamic Select. If you don’t think something’s right though defo get in touch Mercedes and they can check it out for you 🤓
@npoleary thank you for your prompt reply. The problem I am facing or rather a confusing thing is, I doubt my mercedes me app has bugged the mode select in the car, so even if I switch off the engine and restart the car by then which by default is in comfort mode, steering wheel and thr acceleration paddle is still stiff
So the dynamic select will always start in a car’s default mode, in Mercedes it’s comfort. Sadly you can’t change this but you can change it straight away after starting. As I mentioned if you don’t think something’s right definitely get in touch with them and they’ll be able to help! 🤓
I appreciate the information. When it comes to comfort mode is is normal for it to start in first gear ? Or is there a reason for it to start in first gear . When the car is on and running it reverts back to its normal 2nd gear at a stop
I watch these vids just to see you 😅 Ps. When the sport/sport+ mode is chosen the car lowers a bit as well and the engine does sound a tad more rough (on the C class)
Not necessarily, it depends how hard you press the accelerator pedal 🤓 Sport mode will cause the revs to be higher because you’ll be in a lower gear and it will unlock more power from the engine so they will be slightly different.
Hello nice job on all your tutoriale, question, i have the gle 53 hybrid 2024, how can I chage de start of the car from Electric to Confort or Sport? And make it permanent 🤔 thx
Thank you! Sadly you can’t, all cars have to start in their default mode, they’re all the same. Once started you just change it per driving session. As soon as it’s switched off, it defaults back to its normal mode.
Hi Nick! Been looking at your videos and i just received my new mercedes, a 2021 A-class AMG mannual transmission . I noticed i have dynamic select as an option, with comfort and sport but i can't for the life of me find what this means to me with manual transmission. What exactly mechanically is happening when i switch between the two. Any chance you could direct me in the right direction?
Ooo very nice! So what this will do is give you more power from the engine in your sport mode. Sport mode offers Rev matching (if I remember) when downshifting. Try it next time you’re out, in Comfort at 40mph, drop down to 3rd gear. Then get back up to speed, then try it in sport mode. The engine will Rev up matching it meaning a super smooth gear change. Hope that helps!
On Mercedes ABS and ESP are on unless it was on a Race Mode in an AMG. You can however switch this off manually if you want to change have it off for that driving session
Gr8! video once again. Tnx for explaining the ‘Glide’ mode. There’s always something to learn on your channel. Ever grateful Nick.🇲🇹👍🇬🇧P.S. One question. Can it be programmed to remember to stay on Eco automatically or do I have to change from C every trip? Joseph
Thanks Joseph! Glad you like all of the videos! 🤓 Unfortunately no, all cars start in their default mode and in Mercedes case they start in the mode called comfort.
@@npoleary Tnx Nick, I realised you had already explained it got to do with green rules to stop boy racers always staying in S+ 🙄 after I watched more of your gr8 videos; so apologies for wasting your precious time. 👍
Hi Nick, I just got a C300dh. Three things I noticed. 1. It’s not quiet. 2. It only starts on battery & drives for about 10 meters and diesel kicks in. 3. On a full tank with occasional around city drives, it’s already on half tank after 10 days. Are these normal?
Ah a C300h does not have All-Electric driving, it’s kind of a like a mild hybrid. Plug-in hybrids are the ones where you can drive on electric 🤓 A hybrid like a C300h just improves your MPG by assisting the engine with pulling away and turning off when it can.
Great video! Planing to buy a new cla, any advice about chosing petrol or diesel? I find that there is difference for example the engine sound and I personaly perfer diesel version, but the tax on a diesel vehicle is like crazy here in Sweden...
Honestly up to you! Petrol engines are more economical than ever but if you wanted the extra MPG then diesels are always good on that front. I guess it depends on the journeys you do and of course the price of fuel in Sweden 🤓
@@npoleary Do run flats need replacing ever? My dealer claims my tires are fine BUT at least once week my rear passenger tire pressure reduces to 27 vs 34….
Hey Sashanco, Mmm you shouldn’t be having to replace air in tyres once a week. That would indicate either a valve issue or there is indeed a puncture somewhere.
Hi..Nick.. What happens in eco mode, if I do kick down to over take other cars quickly. Does it work like in Sport mode? Or do I have to change to Sport mode before I do kick down.
Hey Henrik, it won’t directly affect Active Brake Assist (red warning triangle on the dashboard). On Mercedes models with NTG 5.5 COMAND and newer (including MBUX) you can adjust that distance warning in the settings menu 🤓 This is slightly different if you have the Driving Assistance Package where the Active Distance Assist will be adjusted on Dynamic Select, but again red warning triangle is adjusted in the settings menu 🤓 Hope that helps!
Hey Imran, the display on the executive package gives you a 10.25” screen in the middle of your dashboard but for your instrument cluster it’s 7” so it can only display one dial at a time. If you swipe up & down on your steering wheel on the side closest to your door you can view the different views etc that are available. Hope that helps!
Hi Nick. I have a problem with c43 2017 sound system. It has a delay on it when using, takes ages for it to do anything. Sometimes when playing my music it cuts out. Would you know if hard reset would sort this out?
Maybe…I mean there will always be a delay when playing over Bluetooth but it shouldn’t cut out though. You could try it, if not just get on touch with your local Mercedes and I’m sure they’ll be able to help!
Hey EJRicketts, I have covered that in one of my previous Tips & Tricks videos 🤓 ruclips.net/video/ZROT4BlEnoA/видео.html It depends on your model for the rear, typically they just click into position by pulling them slightly away from the glass. Which model & year do you have?
Is there no way to change the "default" dynamic selection to something other than Comfort, so that I dont have to change it every time I start the car?
Hey poptya, sadly no :( All cars have to start in their default mode which in Mercedes is the Dynamic Select mode called Comfort. You can change it shortly after switching it on though 🤓
Hey X N x f f X, Yes it does to some degree as the revs will be higher than normal. Still great for overtaking though. Just depends how hard you press the accelerator pedal 🤓
Hey Rishi, Not sure I fully understand your question, but all A35’s have a running in period of 1,000 miles. During this time it’s not advisable to go over 4,500RPM, not above 85mph, or go to the kickdown on the accelerator pedal. After the running period, top speed of an A35 is 155mph.
Hey Shanaka, if you have it, you can just press the voice button and speak a command shown on the screen. Enter postcode Last destinations or Next track Etc There’s loads to choose from🤓
My GLE 400d in India doesn’t come with a Sport mode. In comfort mode when I floor the pedal, the engine revs to Max rpm. Is this the same as being in sport mode?
Hey Alan, not that I know of! I’ve just tried it and it works fine here. When I change driving modes, I can see engine, steering and esp changes displayed on infotainment screen but not the suspension as in airmatic. Hey Aung, this will just be a self levelling suspension. AIRMATIC is the one that you can adjust on Dynamic Select so sadly anything without AIRMATIC you can’t adjust.

Thanks Stephen! 🤓 The one for plug-in hybrids is now up if you haven’t seen it: ruclips.net/video/QzSYEP2eOSI/видео.html Ooo nice! Not long to go then!
Hey Steve, it’s exactly like as mentioned in the video 🤓 GLC’s don’t have off-road modes as they’re reserved for the larger cars like GLE’s, G-Class’s & GLS’s but I can hopefully answer a related thing about the 4MATIC system. Basically it’s completely automatic. It’s power is distributed 31% at the front & 69% at the back providing traction all the time. The modes in the video control how responsive the car operates and how quickly it changes gear 🤓
Hi Nick, Another great video. Is there a way of changing the default from Comfort to Sport automatically? So that every time I start my car it's already in Sport mode?
Hey G Shocker, unfortunately no :( All cars have to start in their default mode which in Mercedes is Comfort. You change it straightaway after you’ve turned it on though 🤓
Aha perfect Darren! 🤓 As a heads up, the first half of the video will feature the modes found in new ones but don’t worry, I haven’t left the C 350e out! I cover that one toward the end! 🤓 Won’t be long now 👀
glide mode surely WASTES fuel.....unless I am mistaken, in normal modes when you lift off the throttle it cuts all fuel into the engine until it drops to low revs, in glide mode it keeps the engine running (with fuel) at idle speed
Hey David, it depends on the road situation at the time 🤓 If you’re travelling down a road and gliding (almost like having the car in neutral) to a point down the road sometimes it can be more efficient. Not always…but sometimes. Having the car in gear will have engine braking which when travelling down the road could cause you to have to slow down to much and then you’ll have to accelerate again where you might have got to the end of the road by gliding. It depends to be honest 👍🏼
Ok video Nick but as a poor man with An A class se not really helpful , I do get frustrated that the default comfort mode is actually lower at the front than the sport mode But the individual mode is not clear and I need to look at that. Hey Paul, ah yes I know some models do vary slightly. Also don’t say a poor man with an SE, that’s never true. You have a Mercedes, doesn’t matter it’s an SE.
Awesome thanks! 🙏
And you! 🤓
Great vid! Keep them coming plz
Thanks Smiley786! 🤓
In the older Mercedes one should be off throttle while changing the driving mode. Is this still necessary in the newer models? TIA
Hey Maxell, no you don’t need to do that, they’re good to change at any speed even if you’re accelerating 👍🏼
Hi Nick,
some little additions to the ECO Gliding that I have noticed.
(besides shifting and suspension characteristics)
A certain rpm gives a certain power or?
I seem to recall that with ECO selected, the car still has full power available for top speed, just need to push pedal somewhat further.
Looking forward to next weeks episodes of these great videos.
As non-native speaker, my apologies if I have misunderstood something.
Cheers,
Tom
Hey Tom, yes I think that’s right, I haven’t used Distronic for a long time but I’m sure that’s for all models where it’ll work only once the accelerator has been used and then your foot taken off.
The different drive modes just control how responsive it is and quickly it’ll change through the gears. Technically speaking if you went to the kickdown in Eco, it would give you max power but would not change gear as quickly because you’re not in sport.
Hope that makes sense 🤓
Hi Nick, great video once again. Do the different modes GLA200, affect the ride height ?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Ah that depends on the spec, most don’t have adjustable suspension, but some might so just check with Mercedes if you’re not sure on the car you’re looking at.
Hope that helps!
I drive in Comfort 100% of the time. 🙂
Yeah I think most people do tbh!
But there if you need to change it! 🤓
Thanks for the great video. Do the Sport and Sport plus modes lower your car?
Only if you have a model that has adjustable suspension like AIRMATIC.
It’s quite rare, but if you don’t then it’ll just do the gearbox, engine and steering weight for most models.
Hi Nick, thanks for another great video. I do have a question. Can you switch between the different drive mode while you’re moving down the highway? Or do you need to stop and then switch to a different mode and start driving again?
Hey snuggles03,
Yes of course, you can change these modes while driving no problem. It’ll adjust to the new mode instantly 🤓
Thank you man.
No worries!
I appreciate the information. When it comes to comfort mode is is normal for it to start in first gear ? Or is there a reason for it to start in first gear . When the car is on and running it reverts back to its normal 2nd gear at a stop
Thank you! Yes most cars will start in first gear although some higher powered engines may pull away in 2nd due to their powerful engine
Hi Nick, is there any way to select a setting (eg ECO ) and not have it reset to Comfort when you start your car?
Hey Zaosh, unfortunately no it has to start in it’s default mode in comfort. That would be good though!
It is very useful
I watch these vids just to see you 😅
Ps. When the sport/sport+ mode is chosen the car lowers a bit as well and the engine does sound a tad more rough (on the C class)
Haha thanks Carel!
Well actually yes it could do! If you have the adjustable suspension option then it’ll do that too 🤓
Does the sport and comfort have the same fuel consumption?
@@roybristol3979 nope
@@clerouxbotha2784 ok thank you
Not necessarily, it depends how hard you press the accelerator pedal 🤓
Sport mode will cause the revs to be higher because you’ll be in a lower gear and it will unlock more power from the engine so they will be slightly different.
Nick, what is the ESP in the customisation mode (Individual)?
Electronic Stability program, helps stop the wheels from spinning if accelerating hard or if there is little grip leading to loss of control
What about factors like ABS (or whatever it's called nowadays) - are they turned off in Sport or Sport+?
On Mercedes ABS and ESP are on unless it was on a Race Mode in an AMG.
You can however switch this off manually if you want to change have it off for that driving session
@@npoleary Thanks, Nick!
Gr8! video once again.
Unfortunately no, all cars start in their default mode and in Mercedes case they start in the mode called comfort.
@@npoleary Tnx Nick, I realised you had already explained it got to do with green rules to stop boy racers always staying in S+ 🙄 after I watched more of your gr8 videos; so apologies for wasting your precious time. 👍
No worries that’s okay :)
You’re not wasting my time, happy to help!
Do a review on the New CLA 45
I would love to! I just genuinely haven’t seen one yet :(
If I do see one though and get my hands on one 👀
Hi Nick, I just got a C300dh. Three things I noticed. 1. It’s not quiet. 2. It only starts on battery & drives for about 10 meters and diesel kicks in. 3. On a full tank with occasional around city drives, it’s already on half tank after 10 days. Are these normal?
Hey Maxwell, ooo nice!
Just to confirm which model is it? Is it a C300h, C350e, or C300e or C300de.
All are very different!
It’s a C300h Diesel Hybrid 2016
Ah a C300h does not have All-Electric driving, it’s kind of a like a mild hybrid. Plug-in hybrids are the ones where you can drive on electric 🤓
A hybrid like a C300h just improves your MPG by assisting the engine with pulling away and turning off when it can.
@@npoleary Thanks for your reply! Again, really nice videos you have made, great job!
Thank you! 😎
Could you please talk about run flat tyres soon
Hey Sky Goggles, wasn’t planning on making a video specifically about them, what did you want to know? 🤓
@@npoleary How about a link to the AA Recovery website!? 😂😂😂
@@npoleary Do run flats need replacing ever? My dealer claims my tires are fine BUT at least once week my rear passenger tire pressure reduces to 27 vs 34….
Hey Sashanco,
Mmm you shouldn’t be having to replace air in tyres once a week. That would indicate either a valve issue or there is indeed a puncture somewhere.
Hi..Nick.. What happens in eco mode, if I do kick down to over take other cars quickly. Does it work like in Sport mode? Or do I have to change to Sport mode before I do kick down.
Kick down will always give you max power where it can but you may find the gear changes might not be that snappy as in Sport mode 🤓
Is there anyway to have the car start up in individual mode?
No sadly not, all the cars I’ve reviewed start up in their default mode which is Comfort.
I think it’s to do with emission requirements
I have the impression that it also affects the distance warning. Is this correct?
Hey Henrik, it won’t directly affect Active Brake Assist (red warning triangle on the dashboard). On Mercedes models with NTG 5.5 COMAND and newer (including MBUX) you can adjust that distance warning in the settings menu 🤓
This is slightly different if you have the Driving Assistance Package where the Active Distance Assist will be adjusted on Dynamic Select, but again red warning triangle is adjusted in the settings menu 🤓
Hope that helps!
I've got an A class hatchback AMG line executive. Would I be able to get the instrument cluster to show the Rev counter as well?
@@npoleary Hi Nick
Thank you for replying back. I’ll keep you updated
Hey Nick. How do I lift the windscreen wipers in order to wash the windscreen? The rear wiper is also difficult to move. Help please
Hey EJRicketts, I have covered that in one of my previous Tips & Tricks videos 🤓
ruclips.net/video/ZROT4BlEnoA/видео.html
It depends on your model for the rear, typically they just click into position by pulling them slightly away from the glass.
Which model & year do you have?
@@npoleary glb 200. 2021. I worked out the front wipers and I think the rear just pulls out like you said. Thanks very much. You are great.
Can you change the Dynamics whilst travelling
You sure can! 🤓👍🏼
Is there no way to change the "default" dynamic selection to something other than Comfort, so that I dont have to change it every time I start the car?
Hey poptya, sadly no :(
All cars have to start in their default mode which in Mercedes is the Dynamic Select mode called Comfort. You can change it shortly after switching it on though 🤓
might be a stupid question but does sport mode use more fuel
Hey X N x f f X,
Yes it does to some degree as the revs will be higher than normal. Still great for overtaking though. Just depends how hard you press the accelerator pedal 🤓
Until how many kilometres can you drive your A35 AMG fast and when does the engine up im asking like when can you fully drive it fast
Hey Rishi,
Not sure I fully understand your question, but all A35’s have a running in period of 1,000 miles. During this time it’s not advisable to go over 4,500RPM, not above 85mph, or go to the kickdown on the accelerator pedal. After the running period, top speed of an A35 is 155mph.
Thank you Nick
I have a c200, 2018 model in sri lanka. How do I use voice control for navigation
Hey Shanaka, if you have it, you can just press the voice button and speak a command shown on the screen.
Enter postcode
Last destinations
or
Next track
Etc
There’s loads to choose from🤓
My GLE 400d in India doesn’t come with a Sport mode.
In comfort mode when I floor the pedal, the engine revs to Max rpm.
Is this the same as being in sport mode?
Hi Farnham,
Ah yes specification can vary from country to country but yes this will offer the same thing in terms of the engine’s top performance 🤓
@@npoleary Thank you. Love your videos and posts. They are very informative.
Following a recent MBUX software update What 3 Words navigation does not work. Has it been removed as a function?
Hey Alan, not that I know of! I’ve just tried it and it works fine here.
It does take a minute to connect to the internet after you’ve turned it on but also another thing to try would be to check your Mercedes me settings & services. These are found on the website (top right) and also on the app (top left).
@@npoleary Thanks got it working again by sending what3words address from my phone then retried hi Mercedes and it responded ok. All my favourites had to be deleted and redone after the update as well. Thanks for your help, weekly videos are great.
Ah perfect glad you got it sorted!

I have a w213 my 2020 and she's got agility control suspension with selective dampers. When I change driving modes, I can see engine, steering and esp changes displayed on infotainment screen but not the suspension as in airmatic. So can I say my car would not firm up suspension upon switching to sports mode or sport+? Thank you.
Hey Aung, this will just be a self levelling suspension. AIRMATIC is the one that you can adjust on Dynamic Select so sadly anything without AIRMATIC you can’t adjust.
Thanks for the answer Nick and great video as always!!
Can you supply a link to how this relates to the c300e? Thanks

Nick I have a 4matic coupe how does it work with these
Hey Steve, it’s exactly like as mentioned in the video 🤓
GLC’s don’t have off-road modes as they’re reserved for the larger cars like GLE’s, G-Class’s & GLS’s but I can hopefully answer a related thing about the 4MATIC system.
Basically it’s completely automatic. It’s power is distributed 31% at the front & 69% at the back providing traction all the time.
The modes in the video control how responsive the car operates and how quickly it changes gear 🤓
@@npoleary thanks nick

Hi Nick, Another great video. Is there a way of changing the default from Comfort to Sport automatically? So that every time I start my car it's already in Sport mode?
Hey G Shocker, unfortunately no :(
All cars have to start in their default mode which in Mercedes is Comfort. You change it straightaway after you’ve turned it on though 🤓
@@npoleary thanks Nick
No problem 🤓
Looking forward to finding out the differences for the plug in as I’ve got a c350e
Aha perfect Darren! 🤓
As a heads up, the first half of the video will feature the modes found in new ones but don’t worry, I haven’t left the C 350e out! I cover that one toward the end! 🤓
Won’t be long now 👀
glide mode surely WASTES fuel.....unless I am mistaken, in normal modes when you lift off the throttle it cuts all fuel into the engine until it drops to low revs, in glide mode it keeps the engine running (with fuel) at idle speed
Hey David, it depends on the road situation at the time 🤓
If you’re travelling down a road and gliding (almost like having the car in neutral) to a point down the road sometimes it can be more efficient.
And finally I did say black trainers and you have gone grey????
Hey Paul, ah yes I know some models do vary slightly. Also don’t say a poor man with an SE, that’s never true. You have a Mercedes, doesn’t matter it’s an SE. SE’s are great as they offer a softer and smoother ride than others 🤓
Oh and the trainers, I mentioned before if I had black trainers I’d be all in black 😅
If you didn’t know these videos aren’t anything to do with Mercedes, they’re filmed and produced by me in my spare time. Completely separate from my day job, wish I could film these videos full time!
