Good evening! Thank you so much to everybody for helping us to 4,200 subscribers, and to celebrate, we have a very special walk for this evening - our first away from mainland Great Britain! Admittedly, it's only a mile or so off the coast, but the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is absolutely spectacular! I do apologise for the windy noise in the background at times, the wind is very much a part of what makes the Holy Island what it is, and so I hope you don't find it too distracting :) If you're wondering how to visit the Holy Island, here's the way that I travelled (via public transport) to and from the island in May 2021: - WT2 bus from Berwick-upon-Tweed train station at 10am (costs about £10 round trip - takes 45 mins to reach Holy Island Green Lane car park) - Return via Pilgrim's Way across the sea at around 1pm - then walk about 30/45 mins towards Beal Filling Station, where there's a bus stop for the route between Newcastle and Berwick (there are buses every two hours or so) Bear in mind that all this is entirely dependent on the tide and safe crossing times, which you can find here: holyislandcrossingtimes.northumberland.gov.uk/ I hope that helps answer any questions!
there was one episode of an old CBBC show called Wolfblood that was set on the island of Lindisfarne that i watched when i was like 8 and for some reason i've been obsessed with this place ever since. i can't wait to visit one day.
As a child in the sixties I spend several summers on Holy Island staying at the St Vincent de Paul campsite for Catholic Boys. In those more carefree days they used to just turn you out after breakfast and you were left to explore the island on you own. I spent many an hour exploring the priory ruins, swimming off the North Shore, fishing in the harbour, and so on. It probably would sound boring to kids these days but we loved it. Looking at your wonderful video I see some things have changed but much remains the same. It's still an almost timeless, magical place. Does anyone know if the St Vincent de Paul society is still on Holy Island? I might leave them something in my will for making my childhood better.
Je suis absolument d'accord! C'est un lieu vraiment spécial, avec plus histoire et nature belle qu'on peut imaginer! Merci pour avoir regardé le vidéo, je suis très heureux que vous l'avez aimé :)
Thank you for making and posting this video, I will be visiting soon and found this information really helpful and useful in navigating and making decisions regarding arrival etc.
That sounds wonderful! It's a gorgeous place and I can imagine particularly peaceful to stay overnight when the causeway is covered by the sea - I've never done that myself! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
It really is a stunning hidden gem of Britain's incredible coastline! A mysterious but utterly fascinating place to visit - I would wholeheartedly recommend a day out to Lindisfarne, just remember to check the tide times for when you can get in :) Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
Fantastic video. Moved to Yorkshire from London in 1993 and discovered the beauty of Northumberland. I've been to Lindisfarne twice before and am going to Northumberland in September and had planned to go there again. Scariest bit was just making it off the island by the causeway with seawater half way up the wheels of my Volvo. I love the place and Northumbrian people.
Wow! That's the ultimate Lindisfarne experience - glad you made it across the causeway safely, make sure to check the tide times when you go back in September! It really is a stunning place, like so much of the Northumberland coast which is so underrated in Britain :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that you found it an interesting watch - The Holy Island is a fascinating place indeed :) Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
I'm from Northumberland But don't live there anymore. I last payed a visit to Holy Island 20 years ago and its a lovely place to chill out for a day as long as the weather is OK. Thanks for all your videos on Northumberland truly very good.
Absolutely! I was very glad to visit Holy Island on a nice sunny day here - the wind off the sea can be quite brutal as I'm sure you know :) But it is such a lovely place, along with all of Northumberland - a really hidden gem of England! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos!
It really is a spectacular place - I bet you had a great time when you were on the Holy Island last :) Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comments - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
What a wonderful video. We have been there many many times with our dog. This brought back so many fantastic memories of happy days we enjoyed there. It is such a lovely place with history beautiful scenery and so peaceful. Our dog loved to swim in the sea there. The video was so well made and depicted the atmosphere there perfectly.Thank you.
Those sound like some wonderful memories! The Holy Island is a gorgeous windswept place, and I bet your dog has had many a great dip in the chilly sea there too :) Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh you'll have a great time! The Viking history of Lindisfarne certainly marks it out as one of the most important historical sites in the country, but the scenery too makes it an absolute wonder to visit, especially in summer :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
What a remarkable walking tour around a most beautiful island packed with historical history and fabulous scenery, a wonderful experience with a great informative written narration, what I would give to be young and fit enough to be able to visit such a fabulous community, I am now going for a re-run just to soak up the magical atmosphere, thank you 🙏 for sharing this amazing treat 👌🤗 I’m off to the ‘Heugh’ where it all started!
That's so wonderful of you to say! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - the Holy Island is a stunning place with so much history and gorgeous scenery, and I didn't even manage to cover it all in this one walk! But it's made my day to hear you enjoyed the video so much, and that you had the chance to soak up the stunning atmosphere of the Holy Island :) Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words!
Thank you so much! Magic is a great word to describe The Holy Island - a riveting and unique place if there ever were one :) At the timestamp you mention, I think that that is Bamburgh Castle - also located on a volcanic outcrop, and you can see a walk close up to the castle via this link: ruclips.net/video/qSKSwfMQyWI/видео.html I hope you enjoy it :)
You must spend ages researching information about your walks as they are so interesting. We love Lindisfarne and have visited three times over the years, the first time I might not have been so welcome. We had just returned from Bergen Norway and I was wearing a T-shirt with a fully armed Viking warrior on the front, a bit naughty thinking about the history of the island. The walk to the castle is quite a way but having a Blue Badge I could drive, unfortunately the Castle was National Trust and not English Heritage, time for another visit.
Ha ha I do indeed spend a lot of time researching the history of these places - but I just love discovering the history of the UK through making these videos, it's an absolute joy :) Interesting choice there with the Viking T-shirt on the first trip, but I'm sure 1,400 years later the people of Lindisfarne have let bygones be bygones... maybe not, so good thought to change your wardrobe for the following visits! And I do hope you get the chance to visit again in the near future, the Holy Island is a place that only gets more spectacular with age! Thank you so much for watching and for commenting as always - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video :)
Ha ha that's the unique challenge of the Holy Island! Better be safe than sorry though - so no harm in turning back, they've got lots of resources to help you judge the tide times nowadays on the internet though, so it's much easier with all this technology :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
You never went to the visitors centre which is a shame as it’s a great place to visit when. I was there you got to sample the mead for free. Brilliant video I enjoyed every minute bringing back great memories and a lot of places I never knew where there. Thanks again.
Oh no! I'm sorry not to have given a glimpse of the visitor centre, as I'm sure you know there's an amazing amount of places to visit on the Holy Island given its small size and population. I hope the mead was nice there though :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories for you, it always makes my day to hear that!
I watched this video all the way because I wanted to see the interior of Lindisfarne Castle - and you couldn't get in! Never mind: it was extremely informative and interesting - I'd love to visit, though I'm a long way away. I'd no idea the island was so big - a place I must visit before I die (well, I suppose I could hardly do that afterwards...).
Oh no! I'm so sorry we didn't get to go inside the castle - I can assure you it's an impressive place to visit, but that'll have to be something you get to see for the first time when you get the chance to come to the Holy Island :) It's very much worth the trip if you like your history and unique scenery - though if you're in the south/west coast/northern Scotland then you'll definitely need an overnight stay in Berwick-upon-Tweed or somewhere nearby to get to the island in the morning! Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video the whole way through, even if we didn't manage to get inside the castle. I hope you get the chance to visit the Holy Island some day :)
It's a nice place indeed! And an absolutely riveting place too - as you mention though you do really have to watch out for the tides - it makes a very unique day out :) Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!
Ha ha well that's very kind of you to say! There's so much history on the Holy Island that it's difficult to fit it all into one walk or trip, but I'm really glad that you learned a good deal about an old school trip destination. Still, I'm sure you had a fair few good ice creams with your mates back then on the island :) Thank you very much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Before I visited Holy Island I was aware of the many warnings about being careful not to get trapped by the oncoming tide but someone would have to be very disappointed with themselves to be in that unfortunate position. I bought a sample bottle of Mead and took it home but wished I had bought a bottle.
Indeed it would be frustrating to be caught out by the tides - but better safe than sorry! Mind you, the Holy Island must be wonderfully calm when it's cut off by the sea, I can't say I've ever stayed over at that time though! Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed this video, and I bet you enjoyed that sample bottle of mead :)
Nice walk on the holy island I enjoyed it 😀 can't wait to see more tomorrow. Have you ever been to Cornwall England? I heard it's a great place to visit 😀
Thank you so much - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! The Holy Island is a spectacular place to visit, particularly when the sun is shining as brightly as on this day :) I have indeed been to Cornwall - though many years ago. It's a very pretty place but it was very rainy when I was last there - I'm really looking forward to visiting again in the future though!
It really is! Almost like some place out of a Disney movie or a Narnia book - a magical island with a castle atop a volcano, only accessible for a few hours a day... But what a place it is when you visit :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - though I do wonder if there's a way that the wheelie bins can be integrated nicely into the surrounding scenery... A project for the future perhaps :)
Don't take your money here if your a motorhome tourist you are far less welcome than your money no camping no overnight parking no welcome the message from this island i is spend your money and leave before the evening or be fined in so many words sighns and restrictions why do we treat our tourists like shyte in the uk ???

Fabulous film. Love Holy Island. Stayed there many times in the 1980's and always felt welcome.

I went to holy island many years ago and Berwick on Tweed.
Neath abbey in south Wales reminds me of Lindisfarne in how its laid out.
I'm from Northumberland But don't live there anymore. I last payed a visit to Holy Island 20 years ago and its a lovely place to chill out for a day as long as the weather is OK. Thanks for all your videos on Northumberland truly very good.

a secular commercialised tourist attraction??, you mean like any cathedral you care to mention, or mecca, or the wailing wall, or st peters sq etc etc
