If you were transfixed by the deeper, warmer, and engulfing sound of Sharon Kam' s clarinet (as was I), you might want to know that she is playing a Basset Clarinet. Apparently, Mozart wrote the Clarinet Concerto for his friend Anton Stadler who, like Ms. Kam, played the basset clarinet. However, for some reason, modernly, most clarinetists it seems, prefered the soprano clarinet for this piece instead. My vote goes to the Basset clarinet. Sharon Kam's superb playing and body movements were delightful and masterful, as was the accompaniment by the orchestra under Maestro Manfred Honeck. Lovely & Thanks for uploading.

It is not so much because of preference, but rather because of necessity. The basset clarinet was as you mentioned designed by Stadler as an extension of his clarinet to reach the low C. The only remains of this clarinet (as far as I know) is the sketch of it on the flyers for the Uraufführung of the clarinet concert. It was described by people reporting on the Uraufführung as an "Inventions-Klarinette" (a new type of clarinet). The problem is that it didn't find any widespread adoption, I don't think that anyone other than Stadler had one. So most if not all available version of the concert at the time (Mozart, if I remember correctly, started to rewrite the concert himself, though I am not sure of it) were written for the regular clarinet, because of the things mentioned above. In addition, Stadler's plans for the clarinet were lost to time, so there was no way for other clarinet builders to make these extensions. Because of the rewriting of the Concerto to suite the needs of clarinetists (being able to actually play it) and loosing the plans to how the extension was build, the basset clarinet was forgotten.
There were (and maybe still are) Historians that are doubtful of it's existence, but it was the discovery of the original version by Mozart, but more importantly, the discovery of the pamphlet depicting the clarinet that led to efforts of reconstructing it. Nowadays, the basset clarinet is being brought back more and more for the Mozart Clarinet Concerto KV622 and I have seen efforts to reconstruct passages, which were meant to be played on a basset clarinet, in Mozart's Clarinet Quintet KV581. There are recordings of Sabine Meyer and Ricardo Morales also playing on basset clarinets available on RUclips.

Sharon Kam has set the bar for this performance against which all others will be judged. The Adagio is one of the best clarinet performances I believe in history. Everything is perfect - the tuning of the instrument, her tone, dynamics, her breath control, her articulation, and her musicality. What is especially striking to hear, as a clarinetist, is the absolute lack of difference in tone as she ascends and descends the registers. This puts her in a class of clarinetists all her own.

The sound of the basset clarinet goes straight to the heart and, if the music is composed by Mozart, then you know nothing else will be any better, any enchanting.

Fantasticl!! Mozart's clarinet concerto has always been one of my favorites. The second movement is almost too beautiful to bear. And such a beautiful theater; I love the live candles/candelabra at each end of the stage. Very cool to know that Mozart actually conducted in this theater.

You can't get better than this, excelent piece being played by an absolute master (mistress...beg your pardon ;)...of their craft, on a basset (the best clarinet in my opinion) in the theatre that mozart used, lit by candles... creating such a special atmosphere. Sharon definitely deserved those flowers, and our respect. Deserved those flowers too!!

It’s an a basset clarinet which makes it bigger. The basset clarinet can play until a low low c. An a clarinet without extension isn’t that much bigger than the bflat clarinet
