Great video from the 80s awesome I was born in the 80s early 80s and I remember these engines when I was a kid when my so-called father would actually bring me to the freight yard all the time it was right at the mid-to-late 90s I remember seeing Guilford rail system engines😊 the actual older style units that you don't see nowadays and they still have a lot of old their units but they maintained them pretty well to be honest the yard I was used to going to was South Deerfield yard in Massachusetts it's a pretty active yard now especially after CSX took it over
That is so cool. I got to tour some of the D&H in October 1984! It was an FRA track inspection of all Amtrak routes. I spent the night in Bellows Falls, White River Jct, Went up and around into Canada at Rouses Point. What a great trip. This video brings me right back. I wrote about this trip in the September, 2009 TRAINS magazine. I have subbed.
some really good shots of the D&H in this vid, also of the old Erie Lackawanna too, it is unfortunate that both lines are gone now, the D&H tracks were ripped out late 80`s / early 90`s and is now a Rails To Trails project ans is overgrown with trees and brush, the Erie Lackawanna is now the New York, Susquehanna &western, with one pair of rails going over the Starrucca Viaduct, whole lot of history in this area, just a shame seeing most rail lines going to waste, or abandoned
And everyone's complaining about why the highways are in such bad shape it's because of the fact that we no longer use railroads as a form of transport of people and most goods maybe if we brought more of them back we could actually work on the roads a bit more and then both Road and rail could work in tandem it's that dang simple
@@cbalducc The Penn Division had bad grades and when the D&H bought the DL&W cutoff over the bridges it was better grade-wise. They ripped out the line South of Starrucca and kept the line North of it until the Tunnel Expansion at Tunnel, NY was completed then the section North of Starrucca was ripped out as well.
In the mid 80’s I worked near Potomac yard (or Pot yard as everybody called it) in Alexandria, Va. Practically every major eastern railroad ran into Pot yard, but my favorite trains were always the D&H trains! You never knew what kind of power would be pulling them, but it was always a dogs breakfast type deal! Sadly, both the Pot yard and the Southern Railway yard that I worked at are long gone! Those were great times to be a rail fan! Nothing of interest like that out there today!
@@ScottJohnson4449In regards to this video, are the tracks over and under Starrucca viaduct still in use, or long abandoned? Btw, your video was great!
Those sound like guard rails. If a wagon or loco derails it'll help to keep it going in the one direction as you don't want rollingstock going over the side of a bridge or impacting the walls of a tunnel.
HI, thanks for your question. This footage was shot on 3/4 inch video tape and there was a playback issue on the runby you mentioned. When I went to edit, there were a bunch of bad frames that were distorted between good frames. To save the runby, I went into my editor and removed the bad frames. That resulted in playback that was jumpy and I tried to smooth that out by using a dissolve between good frames. I could have let it out but I thought that runby was too important to leave out. All the other runbys were not sped up.
Tracks under the Starrucca Viaduct we're pulled after 1982. DH acquired the old DL&W mainline from Scranton to Binghamton. They didn't need two routes going to the same place.
I bought a vhs tape at a train store that is called "Chicago's hot spots" by "Neff video productions". Is the steve neff that made my tape the same steve neff that runs this channel?
Love the sound of jointed rail at speed!
Paintings that move....Wonderful to look at and hear....

Sad the Penn Division and the D&H are gone
Always amazing seeing my three favorite railroads pulling the same train

Why was the D&H line abandoned?
cbalducc Because they bought the former DL&W/EL line from Scranton to Binghamton

And I was literally just born while you were taking this footage..
My husband worked for D&H back in the 70s and 80s...he may be on this train for all I know ..😊
I always look for someone I know ❤
Great video !! Would love to see some footage of the D&H thru the Green Ridge section of Scranton !
Good Ole Pennsylvania... 6 years before I was born
This is great stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Tom, I just made a short of Pot yard in the 70s.
Here's the link. Hope you enjoy a slice of the 70s! Scott. ruclips.net/video/YXreyrrIPcQ/видео.html
Here's a video of the Southern Crescent having to wait for an RF&P train along Pot Yard. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/-4tL9Kx7UO8/видео.html

I do not know. Thanks for the kind words on the video. i enjoy recreating those days, Scott@@tomt9543
And look at there not one single bit of graffiti on the freight cars!
That last train was great!
I always wondered what is the point of the tracks in between the the actual tracks by the tunnels, bridges and such?

Looks just fine to me. It might show it age, but the sound action are just awesome
.
Some heavy duty railroading!
Very nice video!
Excellent video!!! No wonder most of this power got scrapped. Entire service life of thrashing over stick rail.
Why did you speed up the video on the engines ??

@@steveneff5402 Okay I understand, thanks for getting back !! 👍
miss them Maine Central U23-B's
And I didn't know in this era the line over the Starrucca Viaduct was run by Conrail
Yeah they acquired just about all of the EL trackage. DH ran under the Starrucca Viaduct until 1982.
Does the location of the tracks at minute 3:03 still exist? Will it have coordinates to locate in google maps?
The tracks on Starrucca Viaduct are still used by the NYSW. The tracks under the viaduct were pulled up years ago.

I love it!
Does anyone have an answer to that?
I love wagonload freight trains. By the carload. As it should be.
