Man, sub par work is not even confined just to car audio, its everywhere within the automotive sphere. Its so fucking hard find someone who legitimately knows whats going on and is willing to go the extra step, do a really good job and achieve what the customer wants, even for the basic boring stuff like getting a service or a component replacement. Ive seen and experienced enough repeated below average workmanship that its led me down the path of attempting to do everything myself as much as possible. Even if some of my worst work does turn out average, i only have myself to blame and id rather that than waste hundred of dollars paying someone else to do the same thing to a same or worse standard. Like the M5 owner, i almost flat out dont trust anyone anymore.
Enough ranting, i really enjoy your videos Peter, youre clearly the real deal and we are all very lucky that you are willing to share your knowledge/passion with us.

Becker doesn't do installs, he just does tune's. There are some very good builders in so cal that have installs/tunes/customers that compete in meca. Your best bet is to visit a meca SQ event and chat with the guys there, some do installs and compete, some just compete with a builds from a shop. I won't recommend a specific shop because that's just a bias of my own.

💯 Peter finding a shop that does a decent installation is the big problem!! Plus most only want to sell their equipment and not entertain some equipment you already have. I understand warranty issues but as car audio shops are thin on the ground us folk with pre bought equipment are left out.

    • @bbfoto7248

      @Jeff3
It depends on where you live. The best place to ask IMO is on one of the better Car Audio Forums or Facebook Groups where a decent amount of actual SQ competitors hang out.
They are usually more than happy to refer you to a legit shop or installer. There are just a handful of great installers in each locale, and the SQ competitors in the respective areas always know who the best shops and installers are.
Of course, many of them do their own install and fabrication work as well.
It's only fair to expect a shop to charge you a bit more for an install if you are not also buying the equipment from them...they have to adjust their pricing to account for the loss of equipment sales.
They are a BUSINESS afterall and have HEAPS of EXPENSES to pay that you can't even imagine just to keep the doors open!
You also cannot expect them to guarantee their work or your install because they have NO IDEA of the Quality and Condition of YOUR personal gear!
You might have bought used or refurbished gear at a great deal, but it is untested. Amplifiers that have been sitting around a long time (or any electronics) can go bad just due to capacitors drying out and shorting internally, which may BLOW UP your nice, brand new, expensive component speakers or subwoofer(s)! If it's YOUR equipment that caused the damage, why should they be responsible to replace the other gear that was damaged, whether they sold it to you or not???
Your RCA cables could be pinched and shorted out, or the wrong type of RCAs for the type of equipment that is used... Their is a specific difference between "twisted pair" and "coax shielded" type RCA interconnect cables and what equipment it should be used with.
When a shop uses equipment that they sell, they Know and Trust those products, and they know exactly what to expect from them, and what works together and what Does Not. They also know that the manufacturer will BACK THEM UP if there is a problem or issue.
They are taking quite a gamble when using "your" equipment.
If You OR The Shop is on a tight schedule with a DEADLINE to meet for the install, and just ONE piece of your personal supplied equipment does not work or ends up not being compatible with the setup, then EVERYTHING comes to a HALT and that schedule and your completed system gets thrown out the window until a solution is discussed and agreed upon!
You have to realize that YOU are not their ONLY customer and they most likely have a tight schedule, with multiple deadlines, and have already promised installs for many other paying customers on their calendar.
I get it, because I'm a DIY'er mostly and have A LOT of my own gear already. But what I discussed above is a real issue for shops that really does cost them time, money, and frustration. And it can result in a bad experience for both of you.
Shops work on very small margins, and time is money like with any business. For many shops, it's not worth the risk or frustration.

    Great video, Peter!
It is SO TRUE! There are actually A LOT of great car audio "Installers" and "Fabricators" and good "install" shops if you do your research.
HOWEVER... *VERY FEW* of them have someone on staff that also TRUELY UNDERSTANDS how to tune PROPERLY!!!
Like you, I have a great high-end system at home that I really enjoy as well. But we all spend A LOT of time in our vehicles, especially here in SoCal/Los Angeles which has minimal public transportation services compared to other cities and countries.
It's IMPORTANT to be able to enjoy that time as much as possible in our vehicles, especially if it's in sh!tty traffic!!!
A great car audio INSTALL with a DSP is WORTHLESS without a PROPER TUNE!!!
You should post more of these "BEFORE AND AFTER" videos!

As i mentioned somewhere in one of the comments before, I’m working on a program where people will have 2 packages for online remote tuning: 1. 1 days job, where no explanation is given, i just get the job done with remote access. 2. A 2 day course where people get explanation & hence training, so they’ll understand better the whole process. These options will come with different prices though, likely £350 & £1000, which maybe sound much, but even if i charged 3x more, it would be still worth it for most people.

Hey Peter another awesome video. Love the channel. Attention to detail, dedication, and your motivation. Great stuff. True Sq.
Inquiry; I've got 8 channels to work with (not incl sub) and getting a dsp shortly- following exactly what I've learned from you. BUT, I might need to break the rules a bit... My midrange & tweeters are on the same channels with passive cross (crossovers were chosen according to the 'flat' speaker freq responses, not just random crossovers) 😉 - Is it okay to retain that with a dsp? I know it kind of defeats the purpose. But I need the other 2 channels for my rear fill. If that makes sense. (4 channel a/b with channel 1&2 doing midrange/tweeter left and right.. And channel 3/4 doing rear fill left and right) or should I defeat rear fill in order to separate mid/tweet?
Reply or no reply; thank you so much! If only you knew how much I've learned!

You can create your own Correlated and Uncorrelated Pink Noise, Sine Waves, and other custom test tones using the REW program. In the menu at the top, look for "Generate" IIRC.
For Android devices there is an app called *Function Generator* that is excellent. For iOS devices use the * Tone Generator Ultra* app...or just search, there are a bunch of them.

      www.diymobileaudio.com/threads/test-tones-test-setup-track-repository-please-contribute-tracks-techniques.416219/
NOTE: It's always advisable to use Lossless, Uncompressed WAV or AIFF files for any type of test tone. For instance, most MP3 Codecs & converters have High- and Low-Shelf filters applied and also create artifacts in the otherwise pure signal.

Peter I have two presets that measure almost identically in REW frequency domain however they sound completely different. One has a focused center image, the other preset has a diffuse sound. It was by luck I got it to sound this way using a head unit time alignment preset. Is there a way I can see why the timing is so off? Using the impulse response function in REW maybe?

The Pareto Principle, I believe, is worth mentioning. A $20k system is not going to sound 10x better than a $2k system. You can have a very enjoyable experience for a reasonable price IF you have a good installer. The problem is [at least in my area] many car audio shops are full of minimum wage workers with a year of experience but no education or training and they are often drug addicts. I’d say 9/10 people I meet have improperly installed systems and a “never again” attitude. I’m probably one of them. I’ve given thousands for a professional install to be finished in 2 weeks, just to find 5 weeks later they had 30% done and it was crap quality. I’m not sure why the car audio industry is so attractive to hooligans, but maybe it’s because of the cheap and misleading nature of manufacturers attracting the wrong kind of customers. I can’t even trust T/S parameters to be accurate or even published by the majority of “popular” brands. I say bring me your crap gear and I’ll make it sound good (maybe not quite as good as Peter), but rarely do people believe it after so many bad experiences.
