  • What is DSP? How To Use REW to Tune Your Speaker System
    UPDATE 1: Make sure when using autoEQ, to set the graph to Var smoothing (not Psychoacoustic) as this affects the correction profile. Also play around with Individual Max Boost, Overall Max Boost, and Flatness Target Levels. I currently like using (6, 6, 3) but experiment for yourself.
    This is a beginner's tutorial about how to use DSP room correction for speakers using a MiniDSP UMIK-1, REW, & Dayton DSP-408 digital signal processor. An alternative to the Dayton Audio DSP 4x8 is the MiniDSP 2x4 or 2x4HD.
    After applying this room correction, my speakers sound much better to me. I still applied tone control adjustments to suit my personal taste and the fact that I typically listen at low volumes here and adjusting the bass and treble accordingly helps intelligibility.

    Thanks for the great video! I have just started testing my new toys, minidsp 2x4 and umik-1 mic and so far after a few hours getting into it I just know already that this going to be amazing. I have not got all the details correctly and just learning the essentials but the first tests have showed me the revelation. The final missing link in a chain from the source to my ear. The room is the last link in the chain people! Room correction is essential!! It really makes the difference. You go from boomy and mudded to crystal clear, precise sound. This is it, Guys!! Ok take care, from Finland.

      This video is assuming the average person already understands a lot of things. How did he move the filters from REW to the DSP? Is there a wire hooked between the two? I need a video for dummies. One that assumes a person knows absolutely nothing. How to read the graphs would be nice too. I've watched 3 different tutorials on how to use REW and still don't have a clue how to do it.

    This was an awesome intro to the Dayton DSP, the free tool, which is ALWAYS great, and YOUR APPROACH, which is from an experienced Tech, which we can use, and then adjust as WE see fit to what we like and how we want to hear our music. I for one, like music to be balanced, but also like for songs with bass to hit rght, but also be clear - louder isn't always better.. but loud and CLEAR wins competitions... but for parking lot pimping, this is a good start to work on your own setup, and find what works for YOU. Appreciate the intro... not to look for some more advanced stuff to fine tune even MORE... thanks brother

    I am surprised you have to manually enter the REW data into the DSP and not just copy the data file over. I've been working out all my system parameters mechanically as in speaker type, positions and , being triamped, individual levels, seating positions and getting it to sound good to me as well as being practical. My music room is a multi use room, not dedicated to sound only. I use no eq at this point. I will literally change to a different speaker before adding eq up front. I save eq for absolute last and hopefully just as a fine tuning. I've been sitting on my miniDSP for almost a year getting all the rest correct first. This video was a big help seeing it actually done. Thanks.

    So, basically, what you could do is run these measurements, and put them into a processessor that will accept PEQ measurements, like the monolith HTP1. It has 16 PEQ, so you could choose a setting that allows for more EQ's on mini dsp. You can measure this way, manually, vs using any room correction software, because you have more control when using mini dsp. You can even create your own room curve.
    One suggestion I have is to set your target curve to the lowest dip, then set that target curve for both speakers. That way they will play at the same volume, and REW will not need to boost, it will only cut which sounds very natural.

    Great review!
    I have been out of HiFi and Audio for many years now. I ran a very large 3-way system with 6 mono blocks managed by a 1st gen DCX2496. It was like magic to sit with a laptop and measure and adjust the filters over the RS232 serial port. I still have the DCX2496 but have sold all components of the large system long ago.
    Getting back into Audio is a brave new world. =)
    I love how easy it is today to get into audio without it costing a fortune.
    Keep making great videos brother! =)
    Greetings from a sunny summer in Sweden.

    Awesome stuff Joe. I hate the fact that I have some pretty good equipment in a dedicated theater room and have not been able to use REW. I have the Pioneer system that does all the setting for you after running a room analyses, but Id like to do it myself. Just recently got back into car audio and just bought the dayton, and plan on using rew to tune my car. Your video is very good at explaining this for a novice. I will be asking more questions:)

    Cool info, R.E.W. can add a whole new dimension to the hobby. I use Anthem A.R.C. which is a similar P.C. based suite. The mic. purchase and learning curve {reading} led me to my Anthem purchase. Highly recommend some REW reading. Very informative for reading the graphs and what to improve or how to improve. Helpful tips for us with A.R.C. and DIRAC if you'd like to go really custom in the settings. And not mess it up to badly.
    Found REW had tons of info on the site, plus a helpful community if needed.
    Have you tried either A.R.C. or DIRAC yet? Could be a neat comparison custom REW Vs. one of the top room corrections.

    Hi great video. I noticed you mentioned initially measuring at 85db but then turn down to measure at 75db which as you rightly say is reference. But also the pink noise signal for reference level is not full range but 500hz to 2khz. Of course subs are at 85db but the 10db difference is managed in most avrs and processors.. thought this might help some folks?

    I have used EqualizerAPO on PC. Latency and CPU usage are negligible in normal usage. But it does not support exclusive mode like ASIO, so for music compositing you better get an external DSP.
    I have got the MiniDSP DDRC-24. Not cheap, but really worth it. Not sure the phase correction change a lot of things in a small room, but Dirac correction made a bigger sweet spot. Plus I have presets depending on my location : in front of the desk, couch or dining table.
    Also bonus with an external dsp, is that I can use it both for my PC and my console.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  5 лет назад

      Thanks for that. I never tried Equalizer APO since I'm on a Mac. The equivalent is AuLab.
      Dirac is pretty awesome. So user-friendly but powerful.

    This is EXPONENTIALLY better than old school analog eq's. I cringed when I saw a cheap eq in a system set up to "Smiley face" . The cheap eq, is a series of cheap resistors and junk components that pollute the sound by themselves. I had one for a time due to dorm room life. I found the only way to get them in the ballpark was pink noise analysis, not by some "U" shape on the controls. EQ in the digital realm doesn't mangle the sound like the analog versions did. After all that? people tend to boost treble and bass anyway.

    I myself prefer variable smoothing. It keeps a lot of the low-end peaks and valleys, while not going crazy on the highs which always change due to position anyway.
    Then, instead of using individual filters, I export the impulse response as a WAV and use the convolution filter on EqualizerAPO, and use the Fruity Convolver in FL Studio. An impulse response has essentially unlimited filters, and the CPU usage is always the same.
    I believe the MiniDSP supports FIR/Convolution filters as well.

    So for HT DSP room correction is great, there are a ton of speakers and two subs to equalize and integrate, the source is also digital so the only conversion is the D/A prior to amplification. My receivers use Audyssey multi-eq xt32. For 2 channel stereo I try to stay away from DSP. I’ve used ARC and the results where horrific. I’ve returned it and went with as pure a signal as I could avoiding unnecessary A/D-D/A. But that’s just me.

      @@joentell A big bonus for sure. The software for the 408 looks awesome from what I have seen, cheaper, more outputs. Also I am pretty sure it has a higher output voltage so may work better with pro-amp integration.
      I don't mind the Mini DSP price difference, what kills me is the absurd shipping cost.
      I wanted to add the WiFi module at one point and even shipping that was 50% the cost.
      Gotta admit the remote and Bluetooth app for the 408 is cool too.

    Hello i will try to keep this short, i have a denon x3600avr+5 channel amp powering a 5.2.4 setup, the 5 channel powers LCR (bi-amp with a rca y splitter L,R) and now i want to add a minidsp into my setup, is it better to add minidsp to crossover my biamp LR channels into low/high? or to crossover my 2 subs with my LR?

    Hi how are you, Im interested in this tecnology ,help me please to understand, I don't have a dsp device,I do have a RME adi2 dac Wich allow me to implement eq, so if I measure the room and put the parameters in the RME I Will get the same result ? Or I still need the DSP ? Thank you so much

    Quick question, how do you actually transfer the EQ settings/delays, etc. from the PC Software to the actual DSP unit?

    I use the dayton DSP in my car and Uunderstand how to set it all up in that enviornment... I am confused though for in home. This is gonna sound liek a stupid question, but dont flog me:) So I have a Pioneer Elite sc-79. I am to run my mcacc on the pioneer at all if usinf the dayton? It sounds repetitive to do both. 2nd, I am confused on how this is used with the Pioneer as far as hook up. Would you run the left and right pre out into the dayton, run rew as you did and then the L/R out put on the dayton back into the input on the pioneer? Even then, if you change inputs, to say your BD player, then it now would be bypassing the dayton corrections? Sorry, but beginer means begineer....lol

    Hi my car's original audio system has 10 speakers, each with it's own output channel on the amplifier with different frequencies.
    Can I connect 2 of the speaker outputs (like the front left mid and front left tweeter) to one channel on the units high level input?
    Thank you in advance.

    it seems a lot of speakers even the old ones are using dsp like the jbl 305, though the recent elac Navis ARB-51 choose to not use a dsp what are your toughts ? do most use a dsp for only crossover or also for equalisation ? will you test the elac Navis ARB-51 ? thanks for your great videos.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  5 лет назад

      I would like to test the Navis. I was given a personal demo the last time I visited ELAC HQ. They sounded pretty impressive.
      I think there's a difference between a speaker using an active crossover versus using DSP to dynamically adjust based on the input. I personally think that a speaker that applies the latter, should give the option to bypass it.
      For example, in my review of the Fluance Ai60's, I mentioned that they apply compression via DSP. This allows it to play louder without distortion, but it affects dynamic range. It's purpose is obvious because when you turn it up, it briefly plays the music for a split second without DSP until the DSP figures out what it needs to do. At loud volume you can hear some distortion for a split second after hitting the volume up button. The DSP quickly kicks in and adjusts the response to eliminate the distortion.

    First: Any suggestions for MAC users not using dual boot. So you are going analog from Computer to DSP to Amp? If you disconnect the DSP does it lose the settings? For an active system, that DSP seems like a worthy tool.

    i was thinking of getting a mic for this purpose, but my thoughts where that i use my ears now and that's the target.
    with a hifi on a desk connected with optical to dac then you can just install equalizer apo and get all eq done on the digital level before its processed. then i use a tone generator, i recommend the one with a slider, just move it with the mouse and eq apo can set any number of frequencies at any sharpness Q value. low pass high pass and probably lots more also.
    you can show your results as graph, not much i need to do with the speakers i have tried in my room, mostly using it to get lower bass extension. have +8.5 db at 15hz.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  5 лет назад

      You can do that. But as I mentioned, it is extra overhead on your CPU. I still would recommend getting a mic to get a visual on what's going on.

      No, because there's no way to import on this device. You can on MiniDSP products

    To what extent can room correction account for the low end mess caused by large monitors in a small room. I have a pair of large monitors with 8" woofers that can hit below 40Hz but they are often unwieldy in my bedroom. Would a calibrated Mic, REW, and a miniDSP HD be a good approach?

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 года назад

      I would say 3db is safe, 6db max. Beyond that it changes the timbre in odd ways.

    Can i use rew without a mini dsp or any other dsp hardware and just with my computer and my dac? I'd rather run it directly so there is no limitations, I'd rather not be limited to 96khz and i want a balanced connection. Can use this with foobar?

    • @joentell

      You can use REW to measure and a software parametric EQ.

    Excellent tutorial. How do you determine what target dB you want? Is it a measure of how loud you want to play?

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 2 года назад

      Most people DONT listen at Reference level of 85 db so most use 75 db as the industry standard and what all the AVR and speaker mfgs tell you to use instead as its more comfortable. If you have a high tolerance for noise and dont mind ear damage use 85 db as that is what the studios use. You better have a LOT of power and good speakers and a forgiving partner :)

    Joe, shouldnt you keep the grille covers ON during your measurements as thats how you will have them when in actual use? then grilles DO change the frequency response a bit Im sure......?

    Hi Joe. I have been watching all your videos over the last month or so, as I was looking to upgrade my stereo system. I ended up buying the Fluance Signature towers and center speaker. Also 2 SVS SB2000 Pro subs. I am happy with the sound, but I assume I have issues with phasing, placement ect. My Onkyo TX NR636 receiver has a mic and correction system. Do you know if it is any good to use? I don't think I could use a dsp on my system as I mostly stream music through spotify and RUclips. Would it be a good idea to buy the mic you used just to get an idea of where im at?
    Thanks for all the help you've giving me already from your videos.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 года назад +1

      Try the room correction. You can check phase by reversing the polarity on one of the speakers and see if the bass gets louder or quieter. If it gets louder, it might be out of phase

    Hi, really enjoying your videos. I have a question about house curves. If you setup a house curve with miniDSP and then run Room Correction Software, wouldn't the Room Correction Software try to remove the house curve ?? How does it know that's the curve you want unless you set it in the Room Correction Software?

    • @joentell
      @joentell  2 года назад +1

      You should always run your house/target curve last
