@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess I agree. Today's cartoons are too simplified and too similar to one another. All of the simplified series are mostly comedic and the story telling is horrible. I don't see any creativity in western animation and story telling that's good very often any more. I wish that the American companies and TV stations would see that there's not enough variety in the art styles and the stories that are being told. And what ever happened to the morals that the shows used to show and give like in the 80s and 90s? I feel that kids are being deprived of good television these days.

My biggest problem with the new art style is how cheap it looks. Just hear me out. Maybe I am the only one who feels this way, but I feel like the old art style in western cartoons was so much more detailed. Now everything looks so simple and easy to draw. I guess it’s because it takes them less time to make new episodes, but still….more details makes the story come more to life, you can see more emotion in character and it just makes the entire cartoon more expensive to look at and interesting watch

I think thats another problem with some shows nowaday. Nothing scary or the like, nothing to challenge a younger audience. Yeah we got Bill Cypher and some stuff in steven universe. But for the most part it gets fewer and fewer. With the ben 10 reboot being a good example of that.
Trying to give the show a second chance recenlty, but it really is kind of difficult. Like I was watching an episode where ben was trapped in a nightmare realm, and one of the "scariest" things he meet was his teacher... not deformed or creepy lightning. Then in another he meets a cursed wood bear who would probably fit well into the original powerpuff girls... but not into ben 10, or at least not in the way he was portraied there. I was really like "Well on its own, its actually a pretty need concept... it's just the wrong show"
Or take this cartoon villain, who came to live. He doesn't have much of an impact if the show itself already looks highly cartoony.

Something I'm noticing with the art style is a lack of color scheme diversity too. The color scheme in shows like Chowder, Teen Titans, and Avatar the Last Air Bender all had color schemes that set the mood and atmosphere of the show. The color schemes in more recent shows are all very bright and it's reminiscent of being in a candy store that only sells one type of candy. I feel like the color scheme is just as important as the geometry of the characters as well as textures instead of simple filled colors.

I also want to mention that animation is hard and complex character design that is more detailed will take more budget to animate and it won’t be as smooth, the remedy though to a less detailed design is good lighting. For me I can take one con for a good pro. One of my favorite shows right now the Owl House doesn’t have detailed characters but the fights are very smooth and well choreographed so I don’t mind the style being simple

From someone who went to an art school, the biggest issue is that America is trying too hard to differentiate itself from anime. People like anime and its expressive eyes so some people like to draw in that style but are told their style is too anime so they are forced to change it. Even Japanese people who go to an American art school have been told they can't draw anime which is such bs I can't even begin to want to crush. Like, let people have their own style. I don't think that's necessarily true. Kinda seems like a chicken or the egg kind of question, but I do think you may have a point that there's some kind of connection. I just think more people, kids and otherwise, have become more open to anime in their animation diet, myself included, because of the boring sameness and mediocre writing of a lot of western animation (plus greater ease of access through streaming). Also worthy of note is the general lack of western action-drama cartoons (with a few notable and almost entirely great exceptions) over the bulk of the last decade. They used to be extremely prominent in the late 80s through 00s, maybe even early 2010s through about 2011-2012 if we want to push it (though they were already on the decline and quickly being prematurely cancelled by then). They were just about as prominent as the comedy-centric animations for ages, and many people of all ages really liked a lot of them, but it seems like around the turn of the last decade or so, networks largely decided to gradually abandon action-drama cartoons with more complex art styles (and attempts at more mature/nuanced writing to boot) because they didn't rake in enough merchandise revenue, and executives believed that they were too complicated to quickly create and animate as many as possible on the cheap. I think that is precisely why we got the ubiquity of the really basic, bare bones, bean head style across the board, and why relatively few of them fell into the action cartoon category which caused the hyper focus on the comedy category like the video pointed out. Merchandise revenue (and appealing to "the wrong demographics") is precisely why an action cartoon gem like Young Justice originally got cancelled before it's glorious renewal on streaming the greater part of a decade later.

In fact, The Amazing World of Gumball doesn't really have ONE "art-style". I mean, look at everyone. You have 2D animated characters like The Wattersons, Carrie, Sarah, Penny, Tobias, Masami, etc, 3D animated characters, like Tina, Banana Joe, Principal Brown, Ms Simian, etc, and a Live Action Chin Puppet in the form of Sussie. And even then, all of their character designs are extremely different. They aren't just the same base character design, they are all different. Gumball is a cat, Darwin's a Fish with Legs, Carrie's a Ghost, Banana Joe is essentially a 3D Banana with 2D art providing the arms, legs, and face, almost like a Robot Chicken Character, Tina's a GIANT T-REX, Sarah's an Ice Cream Cone, etc.
Gravity Falls' more simplified art-style is juxtaposed against the Monster Designs, especially the Main Antagonist, Yfii Zfmebo. Oh, I mean, Bill Cipher. The simpler Main Characters/ Human Character Designs make the monster designs feel more alien and less "belonging in the world".
And Adventure Time's Simplified Art-style is so iconic, that it's special. Especially characters like Finn and Princess Bubblegum. They have such simple designs, that they are iconic. And again, they are juxtaposed against others, like the Lich.
Those three cartoons are not examples of bad art-styles. They all fit well with the way the shows work. The style matches the show.

I am in art school currently and I saw people go more for this weird simplistic style. Some folks go to this simplistic style because it's the least time-consuming, especially when using rigs on Toon Boom. While I seen a handful use other methods, my current thesis would use the traditional method of 2D character animation. It also doesn't help that with folks wanting to do more rigging there is only a handful of us out there. While there are some teachers that encourage us to use this more stylized style we loved to see, the way the industry is set up and the school trying to mimic it makes it difficult to go these creative routes resulting in simplistic styles we see too commonly. Maybe things would change since some companies are requiring folks to know 2D frame by frame as well as rigging after the success of the movie Klaus.
If it makes you feel any better I'm starting a studio trying to bring that more stylized art style, but since I am a one-man army at this point while trying to finish a thesis, this will take some years for me since i would need to generate attention, get funds for equipment and a location. For now, it's just me and my cintiq. working stuff.

Most of the time these are decisions that are made from executives to fit inside their networks "Brand" along with advice from older generations that have worked on successful prior properties but I think that will obviously change now that things are oversaturated like you said and will also force people to be a little more creative and think outside of the box. Also also a lot of creators that are either writers or comedians that create adult animation normally rely on the networks opinion on where a shows design should go. • @justuslm
    @justuslm 2 года назад +22

In my opinion, and from my limited knowledge, I feel like there is a basic concept that Western animation needs to adapt from Eastern animation: Sakuga, and all the limited animation inbetween.
For anyone who doesn't know, in Anime, Sakuga means the sequences with particularly high quality of animation. They're animated on ones (meaning every single frame is a new drawing), show lots of detail and are generally just very beautiful and nice to look at. These are typically fight sequences or scenes with a big emotional impact, as well as anime openings. These are expensive, and animating entire episodes or series like this would not be doable for a lot of studios, so for less important or action loaded sequences, the animation is dialed back, details dropped, and individual frames shown for a long time with maybe some camera movement.
If you've ever watched an anime, it won't be hard for you to think of a dialogue scene where nothing except for the characters mouths is moving. For something like that, you have to draw a single frame, six or less different variations for the two mouths, and you have a 20-30 seconds sequence. Another common strategy for less important action or motion sequences are speed lines. A very obvious version of this that isn't as popular anymore is the speed line background, which has characters in front of a background that basically consists out of a mess of lines that underline their motion. You need two or three different frames for those lines to have a background for the entire sequence, and you can get away with fairly few character drawings by moving them across that background.
These are just specific examples. What's important here is the general concept: Change the detail and quality of the animation throughout the episode to have both high quality sequences and low cost. If your budget is tight, make the Sakuga sequences shorter, or allow the limited animation sequences to change to a more simplistic style sometimes (if done well, you can accentuate story beats this way without creating additional cost). Because the Sakuga sequences exist, it is easy to kind of "overlook" these lower quality sequences, as well as mentally fill in some of the details you saw elsewhere.
For some reason, executives in Western animation seem to believe that consistency in detail, animation frame rate and style is more important to their audiences than a great art style that fits the story and high quality (expensive) animation in the right places. Maybe this is because of tradition or risk avoidance, maybe it's because they think children are too stupid to understand that an inconsistently animated character still is the same character at all times.
What I do know is that thanks to its approach to animation, Anime can be produced at a relatively low budget and still include amazing sequences. The budget doesn't determine the art style or the quality itself, it basically just controls the amount of Sakuga.

One problem I've had is that, growing up, the style of animation told you what kind of cartoon you were about to watch. The highly simplified cartoons were either for very young audiences or were comedy. A more detailed, serious style was for action cartoons. There was some overlap, but as a kid I liked action cartoons because they had plot and conflict. Some modern cartoons have the plot and conflict, but because they're so simple and cartoony-looking I can't view them that way. Even if they have a serious moment, the bean face is keeping me out of the moment, so I don't even look at a lot of these cartoons because I'm not interested in goofball comedy and I never have been.

I thought it was like watching a painted fairytale illustration come to life and I don't know why but it reminds me of playing paperdolls. Maybe because of how seamless and flat everything looks, like characters were cut out of the page, colored in and shaded, then pasted into a backdrop instead of just drawing a picture and coloring inside the lines. And the color palette is so pretty and enchanting with lots of golds and pinks and purples and teals. Ithink it's like Carmen Sadiego which was also aesthetically pleasing. Actually I feel like this is just a phase that the animation industry goes through sometimes. Even all the way back in the 1920s and early 30s the animation industry had a similar "art style problem" where every major studio had nearly the same art style. A main character who was an animal with a mostly black body, white rounded eyes, and a white muzzle, along with round bodies and, by the late 20s, rubberhose limbs. Felix and Krazy Kat started this trend, and in the 20s numerous characters followed, such as Julius, Oswald, Weakheart the Dog, Bimbo, Paul Terry's Henry Cat, Bosko, and Mickey Mouse himself. By the 40s and 50s, studios had developed distinct and individual styles. I feel like this is a repeat of what happened back then and that it's probably only temporary.

Its a cycle. Studios keep on dumbing down animation, to cut costs, until its almost a stick figure. People will of course hate it. And then someone comes out with the brilliant idea of putting some *actual* *work* into the art, and it'll expose the rest of the industry for doing cheap and lazy art. So all the other studios try to copy the success, by doing quality animation, and the cycle starts again.

I mean, the 20-30s weren’t a phase, they were the beginning. They didn’t have televised series (or television, which all chalks up to accessibility). They were simplified because animation was MUCH harder- you had to sacrifice details in order to just move along.
These (contemporary) studios have made a name for themselves. And yet it feels like they’re un-developing in style.
I honestly think that divide is more from how long the animation had to be.

All you will get from her it will be something like "Why you bother with that, it is stressing you" or " Just draw simpler, why you bother yourselves with practicing, you waste your time."
She ALWAYS prises everything that was made with minimum effort, but if you actually tried to get better, she will discourage You.
And she is not the only one, she often posts links to videos and articles, pushing a similar approach.

And this mentality of being simplistic is killing art! It’s why you always see brand logos go for the piece of shit 2d uncultured ‘modern’ look.

As an artist... it's best to use both simple and complex drawings. They understand that in Japan. They save the highly detailed art for the highlights of their chapters and covers. But they also use very simple drawings for some other things. Knowing when to use what is what one needs to do.

This was a good video. My only complaint would be the use The Loud House footage seemingly as an example of modern cartoon art styles looking the same, because that show honestly has a really distinct look with its comic strip inspired aesthetic.

To be honest, I get that people may say "ouh, modern animation starts sharing more art style traits" but so did early Anime, so did different shows from the same creator/s. And personally, I don't see that much overlap. It's all more simplified but still comes with enough difference to make out which show it's from. Maybe it's in the way the character designs are represented, but I thinkn it really comes down to how the simpler design philosophies and art style traits are handled in each show and design!

I understand that. But it's the Morden day for both now. Anime has more art styles that differentiates because they have the money to do so. Cartoon studios have the money but choose not use it.

I will still never forget that the creators of Johnny Test and the creators of Wakfu use the same animation software, but there’s clearly a difference that the French understand and put their all into with animation that American shows do not. And the French have got a HEFTY amount of great animation under their belt be it collabs, or straight up from them, from Wakfu, to Lolirock, Totally Spies, to Oban: Star Racers, to even how innovative Code Lyoko was. I hope some American animators learn from them. And that’s not to say I don’t like the simplified stylings. I get it. Cartoons aren’t meant for me anymore as an adult. But I guess I miss the diversity of art styles.

I loved what Craig and his team did in Kid Cosmic, in fact, all of Craig's shows looked distinct from each other. Don't know if he's the one responsible for the character design, but Powerpuff Girls, Foster's, Wander Over Yonder and Kid Cosmic are very different looking from each other

    • @mogchoji
      @mogchoji 10 месяцев назад +1

the problem is some of these shows are hand drawn, like kid cosmic (i think it is). some shows need simpler styles to do that, especially if there’s a lot of scenes with tons of characters or movement in them. that’s why anime is usually really choppy animation, since the characters are super detailed most of the time. i agree though that some shows should be more detailed especially if they use animation rigs, but hey, not my decision. thanks for your perspective on the matter though, i think it’s pretty valid :)
