The High Peaks region of the Adirondacks is one of the birth places of skiing in North America. In the 1930s early ski enthusiasts cut trails on Mount Marcy, Wright Peak and others. Today there are several lean-tos at Marcy Dam that can be used as a shelter for some backcountry camping and ski touring.
The high peaks Adirondack ski experience is a lot of fun, and a great way to reconnect to nature and the origins of skiing in North America. The trails are narrow, but there are some wide open slides higher up on several peaks. just be sure to check for avalanche danger.
