@@SHistory7 I failed miserably at both. I'm really good at shot putting but they didn't know and selected me for discus (I've never touched a discus in my life) and Javelin. Discus was okay but I threw 3 times for javelin and all of it were fouls. I hope you did much better.
Javelin throw is not always about strength, it's about technique and assessing the conditions around you. Being an amateur javelin thrower, here is how I won a second place during my school days at an athletic meet. I was a long distance runner, Marathon & 1500mts at both School and Zonal level meets in athletics. My team needed some points to win the title and I was asked to participate in the javelin throw event as well, I was supposed to throw the last in the order (Based on how I finished at the heats). There were heavy winds during that day, all the other guys were throwing against the wind very powerfully and none of thier javelin's were landing properly or were falling really short. I did the same mistake on the first few times. So on my last try, I simply walked to the line and threw the javelin making sure that it landed pointed downwards and threw it flat so that it doesn't get caught in the wind. Guess what I didn't foul, got fair distance, finished second and my team won the title.
run up , 45 , 90 45 throw.. Thank you coach Mr Schuman of saddle brook for being a great teacher and coach All through my school years early 90s and late 80s ... rip I think about you all the time , the great Memories
For all of you throwing enjoyers who want something to make throwing more fun look up the amentum javelin, putting a piece of string or small leather cord on the javelin will allow you to add spin to it or you can forego the spin and just throw 10 to 20 meters further with a string that's straight and not looped around the javelin. Throw some fletchings on the javelin for more ranged enjoyment. Historically javelins were commonly fletched, the fletchings just rotted away over time.
I’m in Track and Field and I do Javelin, and it is complicated to learn but I feel like I’m getting the hang of it. I believe my best throw was 40 inches! (As a female) Best of luck to anyone out there who is beginning Javelin. It becomes more fun once you get the hang of it!
Yes, currently the sideways throwing motion is preferred. That being said, you're not supposed to deliver the javelin with a "sidearm motion". You should deliver it in an "over the top" motion. The javelins are very light. Men's 800g, Women's 600g. They do start to feel heavier though as you throw them further.
Hi Aditya, you don't want to be feeling low back pain during javelin throwing or training. I would definitely consult your family Doctor and get a referral for appropriate treatment.
cillaa I did good. I’m pretty sure I’m on the team. I was a week long process and on the first day my coach just gave us a speech then we went straight into practice. He’s making me do javelin, shot put, and discis (i think that’s how you spell it lol)
Definitely breathe throughout the entire run up and throw. Holding your breath under high force could cause a hernia or another injury. Breathe naturally during your throws.
There is some important pieces of throwing the javelin that was missed in this video. It’s more than running and gaining momentum before making your crossover. It’s been years since I’ve thrown the javelin but I still hold my high school record throwing the javelin 210 feet and I was swac champion in college 3 years in a row with my furthest throw of 220 ft with a hurt arm. I’ll try to get a hold of a javelin and make a video for those who want to learn. Just add me and wait for posting.
Yes, you withdraw the javelin upon your first cross step. Pull the javelin straight back as your drive leg strides into your first cross. Make sure this doesn't open your hips completely to the side (common withdraw mistake) as this will cause a loss in tension and power. Let the upper body sit back but keep the hips facing 30-40 degrees forward until you deliver.
Question, there are 3 hand positions for the handling of the stitching that I know of, and I was wondering what hand holding position on the stitching would you recommend?
I would suggest either the index finger grip or the middle finger grip. They are both used among elite throwers. Also, if you're doing any ball throwing, make sure you keep your wrist straight back and try to hold it like a javelin as well.
There is so much wrong in this video: you NEVER want to push up with the back leg!! All energy from the run up must be directed into/against the block side to create the "bow" and develop elastic reflex to power the javelin. Following this advice is asking for poor results and likely injury.

when you release the javelin, i noticed that your throwing hand sort of rotates backwards so that the palm faced to the right but what's the importance of this and how much does it impact the throw by chance
Yes, this is just natural course of events. You're right in thinking it is not something you want to try to augment. Focus more on the hips and torso. That's where all the power is.
Throw Javelin ya i also noticed that but i started this year i have a really good friend that’s a senior and he is helping me learn i can throw 50 ft and i noticed another thing that he tougher me and he throws 160 but your arm should be bent back all the way and not bent up but i’m just a sixth grader striving to be the best so i wouldn’t listen to me but joshua hudiberg tought my senior friend which is teaching me josh is ranked 5th internationaly. you also move your left and quite a lot while your running it doesn’t matter as much but it might help if you didn’t move it so much because you are moving your body a lot more than you should be which throws of the balance and the throwing point which will make the javelin wobble in the air.
I threw javelin in highschool when I was 16, i threw 45 meters. They asked me to come in the olympic school team but I said no. I want to throw javelin again!!
