An average "rough" master's practice for me these days is 3600 yards. I think I've hit 4k once since coming back to competition back in 2018. It's very humbling that 3600 is this much of a challenge in my 30s when I was cranking out 6000-8000 regularly back in college.
The good news is, if you stay consistent w/attendance, you'll maintain no problem. I'm in my mid-50's and I crank out 3200 yards every day. That's with pulling, kicking (no fins) sets, etc. in an hour. It is a constant exercise in forgetting how fast you used to be though. Sigh.....
same here. I started again 2019 at age 43, coming right out of rehab after a motorcycle accident and being lazy and fat for 24 years prior to that. we do about 3000m in one hour, depending on the programming. and frankly, that's quite a challenge.
Cody Most outstanding vlog ever. We cannot get enough of Lily and your teammates. Lily spot on yiu cannot fake work. Best of luck in the ISL. Kill it. Condition and quality both are necessary for success. Cheers.
We are swimmers. We just finished a intense backstroke set. Neither of us wanted to come today but we still did. So thank you for putting out you weekly content and motivating us to train harder everyday.
“How much yardage do you swim?” Is a question that always makes me laugh when someone asks. My team is pretty infamous in the mid-Atlantic for drilling insane yardage into our swimmers no matter their age. I did my first 6000 yard practice at like 9 or 10. Now my team is able to drill in 8000 yards in a two hour practice. Three hours= 12000 or so max. There is a certain compromise that comes with doing more yardage and race pace, but my coach has a philosophy of training his swimmers for the 400IM to ensure that they can swim pretty much anything. The yardage argument is iffy for me. I’ve only ever done a lot of yardage so I can’t see the other side of the argument.
Hey Cody, it's awesome to have you visiting Eindhoven. It's actually 20 minutes from where I live. I'm a swimcoach myself, together with my sister and I'm going to try to gather as many swimmers to come and watch in Eindhoven. Hope to see you there!
For my college team we usually start season pretty light and build to around a consistent 7-8k ish yards, occasionally getting more to 9-10k. A few weeks in the winter is double 3hr practices
I’m 35, and only decided to get back to competitive swimming 2 years ago. Been training 3-4k a session max! (In meters). Surprisingly, I hit the best times of my career and I feel stronger than my 20’s.
Our club does roughly 5km every session when we're at full fitness. At the moment we've just come out of another 2 months lockdown (350 days without formal training since march 2020) so we're slowly building up, we're doing a lot of tech and efficiency with short sprints totalling about 3.5km and later we'll move into harder stuff. The funny thing is a lot of other clubs think we have a great distance program but we rarely hit the same distances as distance programs, our coach just encourages us all to do every event from the 50's right up to the 1500 from about 8 years old because little kids are built for distance then when we're older and have gone through puberty we can specialise. My first state time was in the 800 fr at 12 and has been in the 50,100,200 frees since and now I'm 19, my coach is letting me specialise a lot more but I'm still doing the same stuff as everyone else.
Hey Cody. I liked hearing your discussion of the specifics of swim training. I was wondering what you thought of Michael Andrew's training method? I hope you can touch on that in the future. Love your VLOG, keep up the fun.
Small correction😅burning sensation from high intensity training does not come from lactic acid but from other by products (ex. Calcium) building up in the muscle. Cheers and keep on the great videos!
I don't know how much yardage I do when I swim but I do know that I swim freestyle but I don't know how to still do the flip turn to get an extra boost of speed when I swim. I'm more of swimming 25m in freestyle and sometimes 50m.
Go see PSV stadium sadly there aren’t no league games because of the international break but I think Holland plays the week that you are their but in Amsterdam
How much of you endurance do you think comes from muscular strength? I've only been swiming laps for about 3 weeks and I can swim a 50 in about 40 but I swim 100 in about1:35 and I don't feel the same kind of tired like you do when you're running. I don't feel out of breath it just feels like my back muscles are like yeah I can't do that any more. I just feel great on my first 25 or 50 then all if a sudden I hit a wall and I'm not even out of breath
See the problem for me is that my coaches do A LOT of aerobic, so much that my sprints suffer, and while doing so much yardage it’s taking a big toll on my body and mentally, which has made me feel super burned out to the point where I gotta take big breaks from swimming, I don’t know if anyone has any suggestions on how to solve this.
You are in my nerd wheelhouse with Star Wars. You were thinking of Endor And they shot the scenes in Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. You were only a couple hours south of lucasfilm when you were in Santa Cruz. They’re up in Marin county.
Cody I have a 500 yard swim short course 13-14 boys I was thinking to just get the lead the first 25 and hold on to the lead the rest of the race. Do you have any advice for a 500 yard swim?.
Yeah, I would recommend breaking it down by 100… 1st should be long and strong but don’t wear yourself out 2nd should be build to about 75% 3rd should be build to about 85% 4th should be fast at about 90-95% 5th should be everything you got left! Don’t worry lots about winning, but a lot of people die in the 3rd and 4th 100s so if you conserve enough to crush those last few, you could be up there! Best of luck!
Hey I’m 13-14, and I swim (short course meter) 50m free on the time 30.9 and a 100m free on 1.09 and 50m backstroke 36.6 and 100m backstroke on 1.17 I really want to get my best time for a up coming competition any advice?
i usually do 5k on mondays and wednesdays, 8-10k on tuesdays thursdays and saturdays, and like 4k on friday. inthink i hit 13k one saturday. not bad for 13 ig
but you can look me up. Sean Dillon. only had one meet since i started swimming that much though. u can check again at the end of the yr, ill prolly have gotten a lot better by then :>
@@seantheswimmer look man i’m not saying that u are a bad swimmer or anything but if u are still pretty new to swimming i highly doubt that u are consistently doing that much yardage, let alone 13k in one practice
If you can swim 100m in 1 second, the speed swimming would not be matter after. You go fast right now and then you make unstressed and peaceful race after. Trust me your first 100m in one second will disturb other swimmers on their self-confidence.
Guten tag! Kind of ironic Americans are so good at swimming at the Olympics, given they are so far from the ocean! All that training most be done in a pool.
I’m a 13 year old swimmer and on Monday we swam about 4500 yards. I just want to thank you Cody for this video!
how many days of week do you swim
I swim 8 times a week, not including dry-land, but I have dry-land 3 times a week

We do about 5-5,500 at our masters practices

At my club we do an insane amount of yardage last week we had a practice that was 7,000 yards

That was really helpful and explains a lot: the better conditioning, the better at processing the lactic acid. Thank you Cody!

I remember I was extremely aerobicly fit, but now, not as much. I used to be a distance swimmer, but now in the breaststroke gang 🤟

The Star Wars scene was filmed in Muir Woods up north from Santa Cruz in the Bay Area but still beautiful nonetheless!
