IF one doesn't like it, it is called FREEDOM !! The "Freedom" to do it again (and again) until one gets it to where they say " Oh Yeah !!". Easy ! Great video folks !!
Bought some of these today and messed up by making the plaster too runny and didn't think to add a support structure underneath the mold. Checked RUclips and of course there's a bunch of tutorials.
It sounds as though your rock castings are not fully cured….meaning they need to dry longer. High humidity, cool temps, etc. can affect drying time, you could add a fan to the area to speed up the process. You should wait until they are fully dry before you attempt to add them to your layout. If you do not feel that they fully cure, mix another batch of Hydrocal and try a little less water in the mixture.
You can fill gaps around and behind the castingss simply by pouring liquid hydrocal that's close to curing behind them and around them. It works. Or, slather some into place like mortar and quickly stick the castings into place, support for a bit, and then it will hold. (Pre-wet the back of the casting first so that it doesn't wick up too much water from your new pour....or the new stuff won't set well). Also, you can crumple aluminum foil sheets somewhat to make great molds. Lay the opened up sheet in a bed of sand or even some ballast (for the tracks since you probably have some). Place 1 cm or more of the sand/ballast in a 9X12 pan, or a smaller one, and then lay the aluminum mold in a depression in the sand. Pour in your hydrocal. Weight several hours, and then peal off the foil from your new rock casting.
Hello I have a question for you wanted to know if you have any videos on showing how you make your stands to hold your mold can't not find any videos on it???
Is it possible to dilute the latex rubber so its can be sprayed on with a spray bottle? So instead of 3 or 4 heavy coats it could be a couple very thin coats to start with then a couple heavy coats afterwards.
Hello there! It is best to not thin the Latex Rubber. Adding water could change the make-up of the product. It is thick by design to adhere to vertical surfaces. Thank you for your question and for your interest in our products!
You may want to try to spray your mold with a release agent. Before pouring plaster into the Latex Rubber mold, spray the mold with wet water (mix 1-2 drops liquid dish soap in 8 fl. oz. water). The issue could be also curing time. Weather and environment definitely affect this, so you may need longer than we say due to your areas conditions. Another thing that may help is to add a little less water (about 10% - 15% less) for a heavier plaster, and then to double your stirring time before pouring into the molds. If you continue to have problems then we recommend using Shaper Sheet™ Plaster (C1180) or Super Strength Plaster™ (C1199) instead. Let us know how things go, we will help in any way possible.
Hello! Thank you for your question! Lightweight Hydrocal Plaster is not toxic, however there are cautions to be aware of that are on the packaging. This would also apply to the other Plasters as well.
Matt is freaky talented. Check out his waterfall video bone of the best I seen. Question. I have a heat surge fireplace with a fake rock mold inside. It is about 15 inches long. I want to creat the same look for my layout. Can I buy a Product to create that mold then pour Hydrocal inside it. Just bought the Riverpass HO bit looks Awesome!
Enjoy your River Pass, and send us some pics through the contact page on our website when you have finished...we would love to see it! You absolutely can create a mold of that rock. Our Latex Rubber (C1204) should do the trick! You can find it at hobby shops that carry our products. Happy Modeling!
Once set and painted what can be applied to make water proof please. I have an idea of making a waterfall and plan running real water but know make rock will dissolve if not coated with protection.
Thank you for your interest in our products. Our products are not waterproof and were not designed to be used in/with real flowing water. We do not have a way to make it so.
To Clean Rock Molds: Use a damp paper towel to wipe out excess plaster flakes. Wash Rock Mold in warm soapy water. If excess plaster is caked into crevices, use a plastic brush (like an old toothbrush) and some soapy water to release the plaster. Excess leftover plaster from previous castings can cause new castings to crumble. Be sure to clean the Rock Mold thoroughly after use/before next use. Prepare the Rock Mold for a new casting by spraying or brushing it with “wet water.” Wet Water reduces surface tension, reduces bubbles and can help with cracking. To make Wet Water: Add 2 drops dish soap to 1 cup water.
Hi there I have had trouble getting the mixture for the moulds correct. Some of my rocks have a soft feel to them. Are they safe to use on the layout still, or will i have problems when i colour / paint them. Thanks in advance. Jason.
this is amazing, but how about some challenges? everyone is making a traditionel landscape. what about make a winther snowy landscape with snow, ice etc ? a real christmas rock landscape.
+MyDKUpload If you have ideas on how to make it or want to make one yourself feel free to share them! We love to see what people can do with our products, and in the meantime I will send your suggestions to our product development team as food for thought.
+Woodland Scenics I would like to try, but your products are hård to get in Denmark. I must try with the stuff i have, but snow i flat and not like your 'frosting'. i must try with plaster, glue and paint mixed together. any producer dealers en Scandinavia?
MyDKUpload We do have some distributors in Denmark. You can look them up through our Store Locator on our Website: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/DealerSearch?WS=&country=DK&go= Hopefully that will help!
Greetings, Ana! That’s not a silly question. Our Rock Molds are not made to withstand high temperatures. Rock Molds should only be used as they are intended.
Hello! We thoroughly test our products for their intended use, but do not test products other than our own. Since we have not tested epoxy resin or wax in our Rock Molds, we cannot offer an opinion as to how products will perform. Happy modeling!
+Jack Sellmann Absolutely! Plaster works great in molds. Since this video has been made we have additional Plasters that will also work for molding rocks. Each has slightly different characteristics but they all will work well. You can find out more about each one at woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/Plasters. Super Strength Plaster (C1199) Shaper Sheet Plaster (C1180) Lightweight Hydrocal (C1201) Carving Plaster (C1198)
I like the rock molds, but, for me, the creek bank molds are a waste of time.... I cannot get them out of the molds without breaking them. I've tried every thing - longer curing times - different mix ratios - nothing works - they still break...
You may want to try to spray your mold with a release agent. Before pouring plaster into the Latex Rubber mold, spray the mold with wet water (mix 1-2 drops liquid dish sopa in 8 fl. oz. water).
I have been doing that..... It is pretty cold weather here at the moment, I figure, that maybe the plaster is not cured completely when I remove them from the molds... I will let them cure for a much longer period and see if that is the cure... I'm getting pretty frustrated with it....Cheers
I am so sorry for your frustration. The weather may be a factor. Here are a couple options as you try again... Your suggestion for a longer curing time will likely help. Another thing that may help is to add a little less water (about 10% - 15% less) for a heavier plaster, and then to double your stirring time. If you continue to have problems then we recommend using Shaper Sheet™ Plaster (C1180) or Super Strength Plaster™ (C1199) instead. Let us know how things go, we will help in any way possible.
Thank you, I appreciate your help. I will try the options you mentioned.. Unfortunately many of the Woodland Scenics products are hard to source here in Australia.... I will keep searching though.... Cheers
You can look at the plaster you are using on our website (link below) and find the instructions, which you can read online, download or print. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/Plasters
love your products and videos but have to say there was nothing natural about the color of those rocks. Looked artificial with way too much yellow maybe just me living in the north east with more grey limestone rock.

Great demo of using only a section of the mold to make a smaller rock. 👍
This is a great tutorial. Thank you.
Hey, thanks for stopping by! We are so glad you found this video helpful. Happy modeling!
Fantastic beginner video for people like me who are unsure about rock molds... thanks Woodland Scenics and ModelSceneryExpert!

Hi I wanted to know how do you make your forms to hold your molds so they don't tip over???
Matt said the word "okay" exactly 19 times
And you only said it once. Very interesting. Not sure how, or why, but it must be for you to have noticed.
Getting ready to try these techniques to improve the scenery on my waterfall area. Will share progress! #squawfalls

Well done video. I have the same plaster and molds. The moment I touch my molds, the rocks begin to crack and break. What am I doing wrong?

Use the flex paste to fill gaps
Is the Hydrocal Plaster nontoxic? Ive used it before and don't recall smelling anything but just want to be safe.

Could you use Smooth It? I don’t have access to the other stuff.

Woodland Scenics thank you very much🚂🚂🚂
Really awesome, love the vids, really helps a person that is just getting into it and makes it very easy to. thx keep up the good work and products.
Excellent instructional video. A different background would’ve been nice, other than your shelving and looking at an electrical box.
Dry brush some white over the rocks to bring out more depth.
Thanks for sharing. What is the ratio of pigment to water for the rock stains?

Woodland Scenics thank you for the reply.
I would like to know how does one clean the mold that is new that has not been used as yet?
You can use warm soapy water. Make sure you rinse well.
