My husband was a contractor in NC and he would sub out jobs such as electrical, plumbing , and others. Husband had a situation where a sub did crappy tile so he had to go back and fix the tile work. It doesn't matter who did the work in end all that matters is who the homeowner signed the contract with....
1. Plaintiff can’t sue the other guy if she doesn’t have his info, because only the defendant knows everything about him 2. If plaintiff sues the other guy, he can say “this woman has never paid me a penny” or “my cut was only $150” Judge got it 100% right.
By the way. That doesn't mean someone is good. Mine told me he is licensed. Maine doesn't require that. Insurance is a joke I should have listened more carefully. Well I screwed people won't pay the last payment. Because you suck
This reminds me of the time my parents hired 2 neighborhood addicts to do our bathroom tiles. They were not licensed contractors and didn't use any measuring devices. They just laid the tiles by hand, and eye-balled as they went. What should have been straight tiles ended up being crooked. Like someone just threw the tile on the floor and glued them exactly where they fell. Even as a child I was mystified. Lesson learned at age 10: don't hire "cheap" labor 😂😂
No, he should have made up a contract and had her sign all the things he was to do to the interior of the house. Without the contract and no permits, she was as much as fault as he, with no contract signed.
The defendant's insistence that, even though the checks were all written to him, for some reason he shouldn't be considered the prime contractor amazes me. I wish the judge would have let him present his argument and make an even bigger fool of himself.
Actually it’s not that uncommon when illegal work is being done. I’ve been on jobs where we weren’t paid by the lead but we got cash from the foreman while everyone was taken instruction from the person we knew was the the “boss”
"he didn't have an ID on him that day" - so he wasn't able to take a check?? great case- lesson on both sides= get it in writing! (& I'm always happy to hear "the cheap comes out expensive")
I don't think I've ever had anyone ask me for an I.D. when they were writing me a check. Sure, you have to have one when you cash it, or write it to someone else, but to accept a check, I've never heard of that. We all know the defendant is crooked, but that was the easiest part of his story to kill. I wish the judge had called him out on that.
What i think happened here was the Defendent knew the Plaintiff and did the electrical work for her, SHE ASKED IF HE KNEW ANYONE WHO COULD DO THE REST OF THE WORK DONE CHEAPLY, He said yes, but everything would be done under the table, so no paper work and he would have to get paid so he could pay the other workers he obtained. And the way the TV program works she got her money back, and he kept his. no losers.
@@themermaidstale5008 You don't need an I.D. to deposit a check in your account, or should I say I don't need one at my bank. I get if he wanted to cash it at her bank would be a valid scenario but there were several checks written and all of them were to the defendant. And had there been an issue like that with a contractor not having an I.D. and wanting me to make multiple checks out in a different person's name it would have been a big red flag. BUT, the defendant said the other guy didn't have an I.D. so he had the plaintiff writhe the checks to him. Neither he or the plaintiff ever said that was mentioned at the time. So I'm sticking with a lame excuse to try and get out of paying the woman back for sub par work.
That word tripped up Judge Judy and I was dying! A lady kept telling her the police officer that responded to her situation was “Fugazi” and JJ was like 🤔 “this says HARTFORD Police Department”… she thought it was the name 😂
This is why when you hire someone you specifically tell them no subcontractors on your job and if you don't know what it should look like find someone who does to check it at the end.
Maybe it's my imagination, but the judge and the plaintiff look like they would be friends... not the similarities in look but just the personalities. Two ladies that are on top of their business.😊.. the judge more so but still
People's WORD means zip these days. Anyone contracting construction work with my deceased husband and I always had a written contract and our WORD to do it well and with little waste. They depended on our word and we depended on their word to pay us. In 20 years, we NEVER had a problem or got sued or called back to fix anything we did. We were always paid on time, what we charged. No integrity these days. No pride in the work. Too many people trying to get a premium job done on pennies. What a mess.
The plaintiff probably knew the defendant and the defendant told her he could get the work done cheaply by workers who have no ID. In the end she got what she paid for.
But you did not pay attention, he was never a contractor, no contract for the work and he was dating the plaintiff before and during the work. And he was living with her.
My husband‘s a professional and he runs into people wanting to do it on the cheap on the side, wanting him to tell them how to do it when he has thousands of dollars of equipment and education so don’t give your AC company technicians or heating technicians a problemdon’t look over their shoulders constantly stand back. Don’t talk to them. It slows them down.
That was a 100% fair judgement, but I can't help feeling a bit sorry for the defendant. He seemed really honest but in a bad position. Still, if you collect the checks, you must be the bill payer, even if you're not.

I don’t believe the defendant was the boss… I simply believe the other guy doing the other work isn’t a US citizen, hence the reason he doesn’t have an ID and needed the other guy to accept the money
guy is shady. but if hes going to subcontract then hes responsible for the quality of the work. Its clear he knew about the crap job and then gave the plaintiff the run around and made her drag him to court.

That self leveling "acid" she referred to is for concrete floors. There is nothing to level a warped wood floor except supporting or rebuilding.
There is a leveling compound for wood floors, too.
Not true. There are self levelers for wood floor/ plywood subfloor
