How Power of Three Failed - Sunny's Spiel | Warriors Analysis

  • I do still love this arc to pieces. But it has some major problems, hence the need for a rewrite. I am still interested in hearing your thoughts, and this isn’t at all intended to attack Warriors or the team behind it. I love the books, and read every new one that comes out.
    I should say as an afterword for anyone who’s interested that since my rewrite is for both PoT (Power of Three) and OotS (Omen of the Stars), I don’t remove every problem I discussed in this video. The powers for instance, aren’t important in PoT so the logical solution to make a rewrite of PoT might be to remove the powers entirely and make a slice of life story. But because I need to lead into OotS, I instead try to make the powers important in PoT. And the pacing is sped up significantly to allow for more plot. I do still hope to keep the spark of life in the clans and the stories in the background that draw me back to PoT to this day, but only time will tell if I succeed in that.

    • @petalleaf2808
      @petalleaf2808 3 года назад +91

      Yeah, they could have had Jayfeather not interest in taking mates, instead of making him another medicine cat who falls in love. Which is forbidden. (Which arguably why that medicine cat code for not falling in love and taking a mate is dumb. They have feelings tok. And they make it when they're an apprentice! As if their young mind will know what it means to be lonely forever.)
      I mean, it was sweet that Half Moon and Jay's Wing were interested in each other, and Jayfeather finally felt someone was treating him not as a liability or just their medicine cat or just his sibling, but well. He couldn't stay. He and Half Moon could've just been really good friends. Someone that finally knew him as a cat and didn't just see him on the surface. No romantic feeling involved. Why can't we get more tom and molly friendships instead of automatically, oh they're together?? They're talking to each other?? Let's make them mates!

    • @suchomimustenerensis
      @suchomimustenerensis 3 года назад +27

      And if they HAD to make a romance with Jayfeather Jaybriar could work wouldn’t really have that much change from the OG plot make it ok.
      Like there could be a scene where they talk about their pairing and stuff and later they both agree that they can’t be together and stay friends, wow, that’s practically the ending of the HalfJay ship but done better since Briar and Jay had time to grow, Jayfeather barely knows half moon,why should I care that he likes her, he barely KNOWS her!
      Like I can see both Jaybriar and Aromantic Jayfeather being a widely liked, and if it does happen I could accept it as canon but HalfJay sucks, the sequences are just acid trips to me, especially when he BEGS Rock to keep him as Jays Wing despite the fact that his parents,grandparents,cousins, BASICALLY EVERYONE HE FKING KNOWS, will die!I don’t get why this ship is so popular.

    I am a bit mad about Hollyleaf. In the first book it looks like her power was going to be like a really good strategist, in the first book we get some strategies from her point of view, strategies I'm not sure we saw anywhere alse, her power even seemed more defined than Lionblaze's one and I thought they were going to become a great super duo, they had a lot of potential for her to be leader with her strategies and Lionblaze deputy with his fighting powers while Jayfeather was the medicine cat, it would've been so cool to see the three of them in positions of power.
    I also say this about Hollyleaf because I think their powers, with the exception of Jayfeather, looked more like super enhanced abilities.
    Also, Spottedleaf said Jayfeather had enough power to shape the destiny of his clan, but he never did! How could his powers shape the destiny of his clan? How do they fit into it?
    Also, wtf is Sol, going back to the Tribe, and time-travel?! They never really fit into the arc, they don't build anything, it just feels like a collection of stories.

  • @greyisnotthefather

    An idea. But with the plot of Sol getting ShadowClan to turn against StarClan, I think Hollyleaf's power should have been the ability to let StarClan cats speak through her. I don't know what that is called... is that like a psychic ability or something? Either way, that could have been a great power for Hollyleaf, especially considering her character arc of being obsessed with the Warrior Code.

    The three should have been Ashfurs kits, you can't convince me otherwise. One of them is even GRAY ffs
    Think about this: Brambleclaw is clearly abusive, enough though the Erins tried everything in their power to make him seem in the right, but it's not that hard of a stretch to imagine that Squirrelflight sought comfort with Ashfur (as she did already and they were clearly courting each other) and got pregnant with his kits before going back to Brambleass, then Ashfur could have confronted her and been like 'these are our kits D=" and Squilf been like "nop, they're Brambleclaws ಠ益ಠ"
    Being denied his own children would have given him SO much more motivation for doing everything he did.
    AND Hollyleaf killing Ashfur would have been SO much more impactful, because hey, she'd have killed her own father instead of throwing a massive fit over Ashfur revealing that she and her brothers were halfclan, that happens all the time, it's not that big of a deal, come on Hollyleaf.

  • @jackallope2200
    @jackallope2200 Год назад +3

    If there's one thing PoT did right, it's the fact that it took its 'theme' in stride and really did good. Each arc tends to focus on something hidden underneath the actual plot.
    TPB showed us the how divided clan society is. Kittypet vs clan-cat. Medicine cat vs warrior. Outsider vs clanborn. One clan vs the other. It shows how these cats, despite living in the same place, following the same codes, and under the same higher power still divide themselves under arbitrary labels.
    TNP shows us how despite their division they still work together. All the clans were suffering due to the twolegs. Cats from every clan go on the journey to the ocean. Every clan makes the Great Journey together, helping each other along the way. When they get to the new territories they try and work it out peacefully at first.
    PoT shows us people, and how they can affect our lives. Leafpool and Squirrelflight literally swap familial roles without anyone else's knowledge. Sol almost made an entire clan give up Starclan. If it wasn't for Ashfur, Squirrelflight and Leafpool probably would have gotten away with it. Hollyleaf shook up the lives of 7 separate cats personally when she revealed the secret. We also have that thing with Tigerstar and Heathertail, and their effects on Lionblaze as he grew up. And, Jayfeather made a friend :)
    OoTS gave us the first real outside view of the prophecies. As much as I I don't like Ivypool, you have to give her credit: she was the first POV character to not have been a part of a prophecy. I know Hollyleaf wasn't as well, but for most of PoT we thought she was. For Ivypool, we knew pretty early on that she wasn't the prophecy cat and Dovewing was, but she doesn't. She doesn't even know there's a prophecy, just that these two very well respected cats are showing interest in her sister and not her. It also doesn't help that Dovewing, the one cat Ivypool thought she could trust in the clans, out-performs her in hunting, went on a quest, and betrayed her clan for Tigerheart. It might not seem like much, but to Ivypool it was certainly a betrayal.
    AVoS shows us the affects of family and connections. Alderpaw had constant anxiety over living up to his family's legacy, and he's constantly surrounded by family who've out done him; His father's the leader, his mother's the deputy, his aunt discovered the Moonpool, and his cousins are former members of a clan-saving prophecy. Then there's the makeshift family with Alderpaw, Needletail, Twigkit, and Violetkit, and the affects of separating a family. We also have how easily Shadowclan was split apart when the Kin arrived. We can't forget that the Kin wouldn't even be a thing if Onestar didn't abandon his mate and son. When Skyclan show up, Twigbranch and Violetshine need to make a decision over whether they want to stick with the people who raised them and they spent their whole lives with, or the place they were born into and their real family.
    DoTC shows us how even the closest of friends can be driven apart by corruption and greed. How, even in the beginning the clans were at each others throats for no reason other than they could. How, even the people who you trust the most can betray you, or do horrible things.
    TBC is ultimately about loyalty. Do you stay loyal to the code you live off of, or the fellow people who live under that code? Should you give up loyalty for someone just because of your loyalty to something else? If you know that what you've shown loyalty to is evil but holds all the power, should you still show them loyalty or defiance?

      @Lilac_goat Apart from the cats having an organized system, religion, the ability to communicate with each other with words, are intelligent/intellectual, the Warriors world does have aspects of realism in it.
      It's not totally fantasy, nor is it totally realistic. Cat genetics are all over the places and the many, many, many mistakes in the books like fur color, heritage, cat gender, eye color, etc.
      It's realistic in the sense that these are cats fighting for survival, they get sick during the cold season, they get hungry, they have kittens when two cats pair up, and etc. The basic things. There are many series out there like Warriors. With animals as the main protagonists that are able to think, communicate, have and set a system with their own kind or others. The Song of the Summer King (gryphons), Firebringer (unicorns), Firebringer (deer), The Named (prehistoric cats), The Sight (wolves), Foxcraft (foxes), Club of Mysteries Cat Pack (cats), Dogs of the Drowned City (dog), Survivors (dogs), Seekers (bears), Bravelands (african animals), Wings of Fire (dragons), Silverwing (bats) and etc.
      All of these books like Warriors are all set in the real world/a realistic world. But they have fantasy elements. Like how Seekers has a bear that's a shapeshifter. Not far from how Warriors has cats with supernatural abilities. Or how Wings if Fire has aminus dragons.
      Well, I'm not sure were I was going with this, but I dislike when someone questions the realism in Warriors or says, 'Yeah "realistic"'. It's not supposed to be totally realistic. Cats can't even talk in the way we do. They use body signals, scents, memory, etc to communicate. It's supposed to be realistic with elements of fantasy.

      @@Candy-8448 I guess it does go too far at times. Well. At least it made things interesting for Jayfeather. Lionblaze was just basically cat Superman. Though.. there are some supernatural elements in the real world, are there not? Weird laws of gravity in different places. People becoming mathematically or musically inclined after being struck by lightning. The very intriguing genetic mutations of humans.
      Well, hopefully the next arc after The Broken Code will take things back. The 8th arc. Just normal clan life with a fight of clan politics and such. Maybe a changing of the Warrior code. Or even the clans' systems. Nothing like possession, ghosts, etc. Though that did make things really interesting.

TPB, TNP, DoTC, AVOS... you seem to have a talent for breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of the individual arcs, identifying character arcs, discussing the pacing, and the characterizations of the cast. There's only so much that can be done in 10-minute videos, but I've enjoyed your breakdowns significantly, and I really hope you talk more about the overall arcs, as well as some of the character arcs as well. I really like the Power of three, despite it was quite desapointing reading 6 hole books about a Profesy that never came in those books.
    The main reason I love those books are Jayfeather and Sol. In the first book I felt it was the first time a cat was questioning Starclan's rol and power when I read Jaypaw's point of view. I mean in the previous books if someone thought Starclan is wrong or it's because it's a villan who doesn't care about anything or because it's a kittypet that doesn't fully understand the warrior code yet. Also It's so easy to like Jaykit/paw when you see that no one believes he can be a warrior (and they decided that because he couldn't fight without any training as Brightheart only made him do apprendetices chores but had no idea how to train him in fighting, I don't blame her, it was her first apprentise but Firestar shouldn't have gave her Jay as her apprentice, just a normal non-grumpy apprendetice instead) and Starclan is one of them.
    Sol is the first villan who doesn't fight or kill to gain power, he just say some truths and lies and manipulate a whole clan just with his words. This thing about questioning Starclan and Hollyleaf wanting to be the most loyal warrior to the warrior code shoud have been the main plot in my opinion. I mean Sol controlling Shadowclan lasted one book and then he doesn't do much.
    Sorry for my English

    I had an idea where Hollyleaf's death causes Jayfeather and Lionblaze to doubt their powers and the prophecy. In Omen of the Stars, Lionblaze goes as far as to abandon his powers because they've been troublesome for him, and live out his life as normal warrior, while Jayfeather hopes that Dovewing is the true third and that there is good purpose for their powers existing. This is all because Hollyleaf died without them knowing for sure whether she had power or not, and, if she did, she was likely using it for selfish and dangerous purposes, like Lionblaze had before.

    I just wanna say that something I really find annoying about the Power of Three, and that is how it presents StarClan. StarClan used to mean something special, and having a connection to StarClan by being a medicine cat or a leader used to mean something special. I think it's sort of because the writer just added... to much StarClan. StarClan sent small but frequent prophesies in The prophesies begin, now they just send massive prophesies. Almost all essential character drama is based entirely on StarClan. I like it when cats have exciting adventures on their own. Also, StarClan used to seem very mystic, but now all they are are cats in the sky. Their powers are very inconsistent, and just have completely random limits that keep changing.
    I still like it, it's an amazing book.

      Same, I liked Power of Three! I haven't read a few books there for quite a while, but I don't remember feeling bored, frustrated, or disliking the plot/story in the books because they're filler or plain boring. I thought the battle in Eclipse was interesting since all four clans were dragged into it. The part where Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather helped Flamepaw, Tigerpaw, and Dawnpaw make Blackstar believe ShadowClan was falling as StarClan's presence was really cool. (Why isn't there any art, maps, pmvs about this part in the books? It was really awesome for those six cats to work together to help ShadowClan.)
      I can't remember much else as it has been a while, but I did like just reading about the normal days for the three. Clan life. And thinking about the prophecy and what it could mean. They're not going to find out the meaning quickly and everything. StarClan is vague and the thing with the Dark Forest didn't even start till the last arc.

    Personally I like Power of Three in how it was written, its more so a story I like where its character driven but there is one change I'd make: Lionblaze and Hollyleaf should have been switched though in power shifts. Hollyleaf would have been given stealth based powers and Lionblaze would be powerless and after the Fire scene would have accidentally killed Ashfur and in fear of it spreading and from Tigerstar's influence would have gone to the tunnels and became a sort of good guy parallel to Tigerstar I where he would had his own group in the tunnels that would be a plot point in the end of Book Three of Omen onward. Thats my only change. The parallel with Tigerstar would be because of his training in the Dark Forest.

      2. Dawn of the Clans
      3. The Prophecies Begin
      4. Power of Three
      5. A Vision of Shadows
      6. The New Prophecy

    • @Cloverrfrostt
      @Cloverrfrostt 3 года назад +7

      @@Sunnyfall
      Mine would be something way different.
      6. A Vision of Shadows: it is undoubtedly the worst arc, by a story stand point and a memorability stand point. I can remember anything from this arc and what little I actually do, I hate with every fiber of my being.
      5. Omen of the Stars: It’s okay. Compared to Vision of Shadows, it is tons better, but all the StarClan and Datk Forest stuff made very little sense and the overall story was a mess. Also Sign of the Moon is one of my least favorite books because what even happened in it? It was so contrived and stupid that I can’t just forget it. Also barley any new characters either from Dovewing and Ivypool were introduced.
      4. The New Prophecy: It was definitely very awesome and I was certainly impressed by it when I first read it, but it is just kinda meh for me. It was very important yet didn’t really do all that much. It got kind of boring in Sunrise and Twilight.
      3. The Prophices Begin: I actually like this one quite a bit, and it was the most well flowing together arc of all of them. I don’t really think it was the best, but I still really love it.
      2. Dawn of the Clans: I absolutely adore this arc but I just can not stand A Forest Divided. There are so many unnecessary chapters that add up to nothing and so much could have been done in it. The beginning and the end of the book were amazing though, and Thunder Rising is honestly one of the best books in Warriors.
      1. The Power of Three: I know you made a whole video about why it’s bad, but I just can’t help but love it. Hollyleaf is one of my favorite characters and I love the amount of depth she is given. I don’t care that much for Jayfeather but he did do more stuff than Lionblaze so I guess he’s got that going for him. I really just like all the character moments and the only meh book was Outcast. I didn’t really see the point of that book. I am currently rereading The Sight and I really love it. It isn’t the most eventful but I really dig how much the characters are delved into and explored. The Sight is really cool for me. Dark River is also cool if I remember. It had a lot of mystery and intrigue. Outcast happened, then it was Eclipse which is Sol’s book! A big part of The Power of Three is actually reestablishing the Warrior Code. The Warrior Code is the most important it has ever been and it is a main focus, even if you don’t think it is. Like Hollyleaf breaking down, Long Shadpws, just everything is amazing. I like this arc way too much then I should.
      As for The Broken Code, I really love it so far. I can’t wait to read the last two books and I really do think, based on the first four books, that it could become my favorite or second favorite. This arc could just be so much, and it has already been a lot! There were no boring books so at least it’s better in that regard. I will wait a year to find out if I’m right about this book.

    • @Sunnyfall
      @Sunnyfall  3 года назад +11

      @@Cloverrfrostt It's a large array of reasons, some of which I plan to cover in the future, but in general:
      What I look for in Warriors arcs are interesting characters growing by going through preferably interesting situations.The New Prophecy's cast was exceedingly dry, and despite having protagonists from all four clans this time only Thunderclan and to an extent Windclan got cats with definable personalities. The issue is especially prevalent since, unlike Power of Three for example, you don't get to spend time with the whole clan and get to know them if you happen to not like the protagonists. The six journeying cats, plus Leafpool and Hawkfrost, are pretty much the cast you get for the series. Brambleclaw's entire character arc is one he already finished in Darkest Hour but he was reverted to maybe trusting his father so we could have him believe Hawkfrost and have a big "will he be evil" plot through to the end of the arc. Then there's the facts that it is the start of Riverclan's decline into irrelevancy, the forming of the tribe as a subservient entity and with it the colonialistic attitude of the clans, and the start of Brambleclaw being deputy and eventual leader, something that I personally consider to not only be a bad ending to his arc and a bad situation with the Starclan sign making his position, but also a bad writing choice that is still harming my view of the series today in The Broken Code.

    I got through rereading this arc a few weeks ago, and I'm ngl it really just felt so pointless. The Sight felt like a decent start to each character, not great, but decent. Dark River had a decent budding romance for Lionpaw and a little bit of intrigue with his Dark Forest training, almost nothing else happens except Jaypaw marrying a stick. Outcast is literally pointless, I really felt like it could have just been a single manga focusing on Stormfur and Brook similar to The Rise of Scourge. Eclipse had a cool scene with well...the Eclipse and Sol fucking up Shadowclan at the end, but overall just felt like fluff otherwise. Long Shadows was easily the best book, showing off Sol and of course, the iconic fire scene. It really seemed to build Ashfur up as a really cool villain....only to immediately kill him off without even writing a scene about it until near the end of Sunrise. Sunrise is just a really obvious game of Clue of "Who killed Ashfur?" and Sol's defeat was so underwhelming. When I read how Sol just ominously stared at Hollyleaf as the three walked away from him, I literally just said out loud "That's it? That's all we get?" Hawkfrost's battle with Brambleclaw in TNP was really short, but it kind of felt poetic with how Hawkfrost was just a more lawful Tigerstar and his ambition basically being his own downfall. Scourge had a massive epic battle with the four clans and Firestar. Sol....just stares at Hollyleaf. That's it. just staring. I was half expecting him to have brainwashed a rag tag of rogues and have them fight the three, showcasing his charisma and manipulation. No, we just get STARING. It was a massive letdown. Really, reading this arc just made me feel like they didn't know what to do with the arc after Dark River and decided to kick the can down the road until Omen of the Stars.

    Power of Three isn’t a bad arc and it didn’t fail, I quite enjoyed it a lot especially at the time
    It’s not too slow and doesn’t have a lack of direction, we simply see multiple perspectives
    It’s more of a character story at times, the plot still progresses and we see the main story continue in omen of the stars as well.
    You say it failed as if it’s a fact and not an opinion, in which case it’s not.
    To say it’s bad is ignoring the good parts of it.
    Even with some potential flaws it still has a lot to like about it.

      I believe Power Of Three was a rather boring and very confusing arc. I could barely remember what happened because so many things were happening at once. They did well with multiple perspectives in the first books but then it just got so confusing. I did not think Lionblaze or Hollyleaf was very interesting until she killed someone, and only Jayfeather had something to do with the entire arc. And I don’t believe she’s saying it like it’s fact, it’s more so how she believes it failed. Other Warrior books handled different perspectives way better than the power of three, in my opinion. And I feel like the Power Of Three didn’t have a main plot going until it was revealed they weren’t Squirrelflight’s kits, for it seemed like each book had a different plot not tying with their powers.
